Someone sent it to me thinking it was my Henry Vaughan Tattersall, but sadly, it isn't. This H.V. Tattersall was a Private GS/5614 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays). In the photograph he is mounted on his horse, with a helmet and gas mask, all sorts tied round his waist, a 'spear' in his right hand, and it looks as though there may be a rifle on the other side of him. It is a haunting, very atmospheric photograph. >From FreeBMD, it could be Harold Vaughan Tattersall, Sept 1887, Barnet 3a 221, or Herbert Vernon Tattersall, June 1888, Eccleshall B, 9c 376, or one of what looks like twins - same page and reference number: Hargreaves Victor Tattersall, Harold Vernon Tattersall, Dec 1891, Rochdale 8e 72. If anyone is a descendant or relative of H.V., or if anyone would like a copy of this photo, please send me your email address, off list. jane@marriott.org.uk Best wishes, Jane ++++++++ Forwarded to the Rootsweb GREATWAR list in hopes that Jane can connect with generous listers of the GREATWAR list. Here's hoping we can find a home for the gentleman in the photo and cheers for Jane's kindness. Appreciate everyone's thoughts/suggestions. .... 3. Have now added my transcription of the war diary for the London Irish Rifles for August 1918 where it seems that most casualties were caused by either the enemy being "warned" of the attack or by our own barrage falling short onto our own soldiers. Details in the miltary section of my website at the link below. Best Regards Peter Rimell http://www.rimell.u-net.com/

    3. Since this is an international list and we could have people form any country in the world that we are all communicating with, we should also be careful with abbreviations for country's and states, City's and Towns. Making it clear what and where we are refering to. 2. G Overend
    3. My grandfather Sydney Armitage was in the Leeds Pals and may previously have been in the Territorials. On one occasion he gave his address as 146th Brigade Machine Gun Company. His brother Laurie Ritchie Armitage enlisted at a meeting in Ilkley. He was awarded the MC in October 1916. He was wounded and transferred to a hospital in England but died of gunshot wounds in November 1916. I have seen medal cards and some entries in the London Gazette. Another relative H O (Harrison Overend) Farrar claimed his medals from hospital in Leeds and at his marriage is described as an army pensioner but I was unable to find any record of him on Ancestry.co.uk. May there still be some records available that are not online? I will be visiting the National Archives and would like to make best use of my time there in finding any relevant military records or war diaries. I would be grateful for any guidance from members of the list. Thank you. Gillian

    3. Sue - in "The Five Years" John Brophy gives a table of comparative strengths & percentages in France (which will include Belgian Flanders) for various branches throughout the war - for example the AVC in March 1918 shows > # total strength 13,379 # which was 0.95% of the total Army strength in F&F during that month # and 2.93% of the total non-combatant strength By way of comparison, the highest % of the N-C strength in March 1918 was the Labour Corps with 42.66%, followed by the Army Service Corps with 27.94%. The AVC total and %'s hardly alter through till Nov 1918. regards - Tom Tulloch-Marshall WW1 Military Research website - http://www.btinternet.com/~prosearch/index.html

    2. Laffey
    3. Hello all I have come across conflicting information about the number of men who served in this corps during WW1 One source says the highest numbers were 600 officers and 15,000 other ranks, while another quotes 651 and 1446 respectively. The numbers for officers seem OK but there is a BIG difference for the ORs. Can anyone tell me which is correct? Thanks Sue Laffey

    1. Re: [GREATWAR] RE 24TH COUNTY OF LONDON REGIMENT
    2. Mike Shingleton
    3. Hello Carolynn, Its the 24th battalion of the London Regiment - there were actually two battalion 1/24th and 2/24th. The former was raised at Lambeth and the latter at neighbouring Southwark. His home address is given on his service record as South Street, Kennington. As to where they served its a bit academic really as Cecil Stangroome never served overseas - his service record says 'home service' from 31/07/1915 to 20/05/1916 (I got the latter year wrong in my previous e-mail). He was discharged because he lied about his age, claiming to be 19 years old at the time of his attestation in 1915. At the time of his discharge in 1916 he was stationed in Winchester.
