    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: GRAINGER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EEg.2ACIB/127 Message Board Post: Hi, My 2 x Great Grandfather was John GRAINGER born 30 Jul 1826 at Cupar, Fife, Scotland. He was shown as a Cabinet Maker, Ship Porter, Street Porter & Shoemaker on various documents. The Old Parochial Registers at the General Register Office for Scotland show him as a Cabinetmaker but the 1851, 1881 & 1891 census shows him as a Shoemaker. Therefore I think "Cabinetmaker" may have been a mistake I have not been able to locate his parents. Is there anyone on this Board that can help me to find his parents? The following is from "my" Notes and I thought you may find it to be of interest. There are a number of GRAINGER in Scotland and there is strong circumstantial evidence that some of them may have spent periods of time in Yorkshire. My 2 x Great Grandfather - John GRAINGER a Ship Porter resided at No. 1 Cumberland Street Lane, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland when he married Isabella BOWIE his Spouse had a "Daughter Born there on the Eight day of January last" - Named Mary Davidina Brown (I believe she would have been given the "Brown" from the minister who christened her - I. B.) Baptized on the Sabbath Twenty Second February current in St Bernard's Church by the Rev. David BROWN, late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool (this could indicate that John's father was in Yorkshire. There were GRAINGER in Col. James DURHAM's Fencibles which was established around 1795/96. They fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, therefore, it is possible that the Grainger's had children born in Ireland. The regiment was disbanded in 1799. >From "the pages & the Names 'Tasmania Gen Web', 'Tas Gen Web', & 'Australia Gen Web' are Copyright c1999-2000 Pacific Gen Web Project <http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacifgw/>. Available at Tasmanian Libraries Nominal return of the Inmates of the Invalid Depot at Launceston, Chargeable to Colonial Funds , December 1870 A GRAINGER John aged 65, arrived in colony on the ship "Chapman 1". There are also GRAINGER in the London area that came from County Durham sometime in the nineteenth century (or maybe even earlier). It is possible that the father of my 2 x Great Grandfather John GRAINGER (who was born on 30 July 1826 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland) was in Yorkshire. Later generations were in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland & Monifieth, Forfar, Scotland before they immigrated to Australia. Not all of the family came to Australia and I have not been able to trace them either. In fact they are proving a bit elusive. Just a bit of trivial information for you: - My Grandmother always said: - 1. All GRAINGERs (if spelt with "i") are related. 2. The GRAINGERs are related to the English Royal Family. I have not been able to confirm either of these 2 statements but I also note that some of my GRAINGER Line are shown on different records as GRANGER so I don't hold to my grandmother's statement. There was a Vicar in the 1600's by the name of GRAINGER and when he died his wife married a son of the King of Scotland (he never became King) so maybe this is where my grandmother's story came from.
