Author: beppoj Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.grainger/132.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mr. Curry: I am from Louisville but live in Chicago. A couple of years ago I purchased a copy of the Curry Notes you deposited at the Filson Club. They have been extremely helpful in my own researches. Thank you. What confuses me about Hugh Curry's Civil War record is whether he served under John Morgan and Basil Duke before or after he was a prisoner of war. According to my info he enlisted in 1861 (C Company, 5 KY Mounted Infantry)and was captured the same year in Bullitt County, sent to Camp Chase, then Johnson Island, then Vicksburg in 1862 for exchange. But my grt-aunt insisted that he participated in Morgan's Raid which was in 1863. Did he re-enlist? She also told me that he was arrested with George Prentice's son Clarence and both were charged with espionage. Prentice wrote Lincoln begging him to pardon his son and Lincoln did so. This really did happen to Clarence Prentice (I believe in 1862) but I don't know if Hugh was involved. I double-checked the story about hiding from the feds, and the version I heard (again from my grt-aunt) was that Hugh hid under Docia's bed while his compatriot hid in the chimney. The feds left but both men were apprehended later. Did one of Hugh's brothers serve in the war? If so, do you know which one? I think we have the same photographs of John W. Curry, Theodocia, and Mary Ann. I also have several pictures of Hugh's brother Andrew. I was very pleased to discover the new stone for John W. & Theodocia Curry at Cave Hill a few years ago. I wondered where it came from. Thank you for your efforts to honor and remember our family. Best, SLJones Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: beppoj Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.grainger/132.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hugh & Mary Ann Curry were my grt-grt-grandparents through their son Lee (1870-1952) who used to live on Ransdell Ave. in Louisville. Are you by chance a grandson of Arthur B. Curry? Hugh E. Curry lived (like his father) a very interesting life. Have you ever seen a photo of him? I've been looking for one for decades with no luck. Lee Curry had a picture of his mother Mary Ann, which I have, but no photo of his father was found among his papers. I would also like to straighten out his Civil War record. My grt-aunt Ruth Curry told me fascinating stories about him (hiding from the feds in the chimney while his daughter Docia feigned illness, getting arrested with George Prentiss' son). These are, of course, difficult to verify with public records. Thank you for the info. Let me know if I can fill in anything for you. William and Elizabeth were parents of my grt-grt-grandmother Mary Ann Grainger Curry (1835-1910). William seems to have been a co-owner of Joseph Metcalf's brewery from 1844 to 1854, when it went by the name Metcalf & Grainger. In 1860 William - still listed as a brewer - was living in a boarding house in Louisville without his wife, so maybe they divorced. I can't find any more info either. Best, Jonesy. Cork, on February 23, 1841. Marriage witnesses were Ellen Grainger and Humphrey Desmond. Looking at Griffith's entries for Grainger and Granger, I would say I am looking for this family name in the civil parishes of Dunisky, Kilmurry, or Kilmichael with a slight possibility of Inchigeelagh. Author: sarahekenny Surnames: Grainger, Boardman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.grainger/132.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Mike, Thanks for replying. There is quite a bit of confusion on the Grainger side of the family. My great grandfather was William Jutland Clarke Grainger, who moved to Australia at the age of 2 in 1920 or 1921. His 2 Sisters were Elizabeth Annie and Lily (who sadly died of a hole in her heart aged 4 or 5. Their parents were William Grainger and Elizabeth (or Eliza) Boardman. William Grainger died in 1965 and I think, but am not sure, that he was born in 1890. It is known that his family lived in Wade Street, Stockton-on-Tees, and I know of a sister named Elizabeth (Cissy). The problem is I cannot find him in the Census reports. There were two Grainger family's living in Wade Street. I'm not sure if the heads were brothers, or different family's, but the family I am looking at, Thomas H. Grainger was born about 1845 in Barraby and Sarah A. Grainger was born about 1870 in Llastwick, Norfolk. I am not sure if these are actually related to me though. Thank you and Regards, !
