Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEg.2ACIB/15.16.46 Message Board Post: Benjamin Grainger came to the U.S. in 1909 to stay or start out at his nephew George Grainger's home in Rend City, IL. George came over earlier, probably before 1909. His wife's name was Margaret. She too arrived in 1909. Here is what I pulled from Ellisisland.org Margaret Ann Grainger, 25, married, born Spennymoor, of Spennymoor, to join George Grainger husband, Rend City, IL children Mary 2, Robert James 20 months born Spennymoor, English, English, last relative, Father, Robert Minto (??? Old handwriting, abbrev for ?) 20 Bishop Close Cottages, Spennymoor His sister Mildred married Thomas Lennon, in Durham. She too immigrated. She was born though in Falls Creek or False Creek, PA about 1888 or 1889. She was resident however of Durham, England. She said her last relative was her mother, Mary. This was in 1920 when Mildred went home to visit. The address, 12 Arthur Street, Spennymoor They could have easily all have been born Derbyshire. The family was definitely in the coal mining business.

    3. I am new to this list, but am a member of several others and have found them all to quite helpful. So I am hoping I will be able to connect with someone who can help me out with my latest brick wall. I am looking for information on Caroline Hamblet, nee' Grainger, b.abt 1821 in Kates Hill, Dudley, Worcestershire, Eng. She married Joseph Hamblet on 3 Dec 1837 in Kingswainford, Worcester (?) England. Caroline's father's name is James Grainger and I have no other information on him. One of Caroline and Joseph's daughters (Sarah Hamblet Brant) second husband was a David Grainger b. 1836 in Netherton, Worcester. This family (Hamblets) seemed to intermarry quite a bit. I have several cases of cousins marrying each other so it is possible that David, Caroline and James are all related some how. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who may have info on this or a related family. Caroline Allen-Martin

Rebecca senior married William Mayhook, was widowed and married George Jaycock one year prior to her daughters marriage. I have some interesting certificates. It was definately spelt with an i. I haven't heard of any royalty or a scottish connection, but many Irish immigrants came to Scotland, my becky lived in London.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EEg.2ACIB/119.2 Message Board Post: Hi All, There are a number of GRAINGER in Scotland and there is strong circumstantial evidence that some of them may have spent periods of time in Yorkshire. My 2 x Great Grandfather - John GRAINGER a Ship Porter resided at No. 1 Cumberland Street Lane, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland when he married Isabella BOWIE his Spouse had a "Daughter Born there on the Eight day of January last" - Named Mary Davidina Brown (I believe she would have been given the "Brown" from the minister who christened her - I. B.) Baptized on the Sabbath Twenty Second February current in St Bernard's Church by the Rev. David BROWN, late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool (this could indicate that John's father was in Yorkshire - I. B.). There were GRAINGER in Col. James DURHAM's Fencibles which was established around 1795/96. They fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, therefore, it is possible that the Grainger's had children born in Ireland. The regiment was disbanded in 1799. There are also GRAINGER in the London area that came from County Durham sometime in the nineteenth century (or maybe even earlier). It is possible that the father of my 2 x Great Grandfather John GRAINGER (who was born on 30 July 1826 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland according to the 1992 IGI Microfiche) was in Yorkshire. Later generations were in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland & Monifieth, Forfar, Scotland before they immigrated to Australia. Not all of the family came to Australia and I have not been able to trace them either. In fact they are proving a bit elusive. Just a bit of trivial information for you: - My Grandmother always said: - 1. All GRAINGERs (if spelt with "i") are related. 2. The GRAINGERs are related to the English Royal Family. I have not been able to confirm either of these 2 statements but I also note that some of my GRAINGER Line are shown on different records as GRANGER so I don't hold to my grandmother's statement. There was a Vicar in the 1600's by the name of GRAINGER and when he died his wife married a son of the King of Scotland (he never became King) so maybe this is where my grandmother's story came from. Regards, Ian Butterworth Ineke@bigfoot.com
