    1. Re: I have found researching my GRAINGER ancestors very frustrating.
    2. Ian Butterworth
    3. Hi List, (Sorry in advance for making this posting so large). I have found researching my GRAINGER ancestors very frustrating. For about 12 years I have been "stuck" at my 2 x Great Grandfather was John GRAINGER born 1818 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland (Date & Places from the Censuses but cannot find a christening). There are a number of GRAINGER in Scotland and there is strong circumstantial evidence that some of them may have spent periods of time in Yorkshire, or came from there. My 2 x Great Grandfather - John GRAINGER was a Ship Porter residing at No. 1 Cumberland Street Lane, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland when he married Isabella BOWIE his Spouse had a "Daughter Born there on the Eight day of January last" - Named Mary Davidina Brown GRAINGER (I believe she would have been given the "Brown" from the minister who christened her) Baptized on the Sabbath Twenty Second February current in St Bernard's Church by the Rev. David BROWN, late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool (this could indicate that John's father was in Yorkshire). There were GRAINGER in Col. James DURHAM's Fencibles which was established around 1795/96. They fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, therefore, it is possible that the GRAINGER's had children born in Ireland. The regiment was disbanded in 1799. Below I will Cut & Paste some Notes that I have made over the years whilst I have been trying to sort out my GRAINGER Line. As two heads are better than I would appreciate any comments at all on the info collected or the comments I have made. Two possible marriages for his parents: - 1. Charles GRAINGER m. Annie HUTCHESON on 19 Dec. 1824 @ Cupar, Fife. 2. John GRANGER m. Elizabeth DOWN on 6 May 1821 @ Cupar, Fife. (The 2nd. one looks to be the most likely because John and Elizabeth are names used in this family). Possibly another son Thomas. If so, he married an Isabella SMITH on 3rd July 1831 in Edinburgh. Couldn't find a record in the General Register Office for Scotland. Maybe not a Church of Scotland?. The IGI Microfiche and Family Search show his birth, but no parents. 3 possible sisters in file. The LDS, Ancestral File shows:- John GRAINGER Sex: M Event(s): Birth: Abt 1826 in Aldercar Park, Derbyshire, Eng. Death: 1845 Parents: Father: John GRAINGER Mother: Ann WOODHOUSE Marriage(s): Spouse: Miss BROWN Submitter(s): Ancestral File is a collection of genealogical information taken from Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records submitted to the Family History Department since 1978. The information has not been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy. I do not think that this is "my" John but if some of the submitted info is wrong, then it is a possibility. 27 Jul 2004 - I think I may just have found John GRAINGER. This one on the 1841 Census is born in Midlothian and the one I have had from the IGI was born in Cupar, Fife. Now the 1881 Census does show our John GRAINGER was from Cupar, Fife. But as was often the case that the incorrect place of birth was put down by the census taker. Maybe the 1841 Census is correct and the 1881 wrong (or maybe I am just wish full thinking). On looking at the Family Search IGI I find: - John GRANGER -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: 25 Jun 1824 Saint Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: Hugh GRANGER Mother: Agnes BROWN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: C119886 1820 - 1826 0993529, 0103060 Film 6901046 Film Sheet: =================================== Hugh GRAINGER married Agnes BROWN on 18 Apr 1824 at St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. If this is him then the Family Search IGI shows he had a brother James born (I think this should be a Christening) 12 Aug 1824 at Saint Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Now the interesting thing is that this John's mother is a BROWN. Could she be related to the Rev. David BROWN, late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool who Christened John's daughter Mary Davidina Brown GRAINGER? The FreeCEN 1841 census shows: - Piece: SCT1841/685/2 Place: Edinb. Address: Castle Bank. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks GRAINGER Hugh M 40 Carter Outside Census County (1841) GRAINGER Agnes F 40 Midlothian GRAINGER John M 15 Midlothian GRAINGER Elisabeth F 10 Midlothian GRAINGER Margret F 8 Midlothian GRAINGER Agnes F 12 Midlothian GRAINGER Jenet F 6 Midlothian BROWN James M 35 Carter Midlothian The OPR index for Births and Christenings from 1 Jan 1816 to 31 Dec 1820 shows: - 18 May 1818 John GRAINGER; Father, Thomas GRAINGER; Mother, Margaret BOWIE; Parish, Muirkirk; GROS, 607/00; Data, 0002. There are also GRAINGER in the London area that came from County Durham sometime in the nineteenth century (or maybe even earlier). It is possible that the father of my 3 x Great Grandfather was in Yorkshire. Later generations were in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland and Monifieth, Forfar, Scotland before they immigrated to Australia. Not all of the family came to Australia and I have not been able to trace them either. In fact they are proving a bit elusive. Just a bit of trivial information for you: - My Grandmother always said: - 1. All GRAINGER's (if spelt with "i") are related. 2. The GRAINGER's are related to the English Royal Family. I have not been able to confirm either of these 2 statements but I also note that some of my GRAINGER Line are shown on different records as GRANGER so I don't hold to my grandmother's statement. There was a Vicar in the 1600's by the name of GRAINGER and when he died his wife married a son of the King of Scotland (he never became King) so maybe this is where my grandmother's story came from. The name "GRAINGER" seems to have originated from the French Huguenots who settled in Cork City in 17th century. However there were GRAINGER in England in the 1600's. Talk to you later. 3. Hi Andrew, Your Subject heading is GRAINGER from Edinburgh (which is in Scotland) so I have had a look at the Family Search IGI http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true British Isles (instead of just England) and I think I may have found "your" John Walter and Mary Jane GRAINGER. There is a Mary Jane GRAINGER and a John Welles GRAINGER shown as the children of John GRAINGER and Jane. As this was transcribed from the parish records it is quiet possible that "Walter" became "Welles". 3. Hi, My GRAINGER Line were also in Edinburgh but they were also in Cupar, Fife, Scotland and maybe (very likely) in Yorkshire, England. On 4 Dec 2004 you wrote: - Hello, I'm looking for anyone who knows any information about the following family- Hugh Grainger and Agnes Brown had the following children - JOHN GRANGER - Birth: 25 JUN 1824 JAMES GRAINGER - Birth: 26 SEP 1825 HUGH GRAINGER -Birth: 12 MAY 1827 AGNES GRAINGER -Birth: 12 JUN 1829 ELIZABETH GRAINGER -Birth: 21 FEB 1831 MARGARET GRAINGER -Birth: 22 SEP 1832 JANET GRAINGER -Birth: 15 MAR 1834 HUGH GRAINGER -Birth: 28 APR 1837 All children were born in Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Now I see this came from the IGI Family Search and was an "Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record". Because the IGI shows "All children were born in Saint Cuthbert's, Edinburgh" I assume that this is a mistake and should be Christened in St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh http://www.st-cuthberts.net/. Now please do not think I am being "picky" - I only mention this to help you with your research. The IGI shows "your" Hugh GRAINGER and Agnes BROWN married 18 Apr 1824 in Saint Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. There are 2 Hugh GRAINGER christened in the correct time frame that could be "your" Hugh GRAINGER (there maybe others that are not shown on the IGI): - 1. 26 Jul 1800 in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland son of Hugh GRAINGER and Helen MARSHALL. 2. 16 Oct 1800 in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland son of John GRAINGER and Agnes GRAINGER. I have two GRAINGER - MARSHALL marriages on my Tree. 1. Christina GRAINGER m. Alexander Boswell MARSHALL on 21 Jun 1883 in St George's Church, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. 2. Isabella GRAINGER m. Andrew MARSHALL on 25 Nov 1881 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. My 2 x Great Grandfather was John GRAINGER b. 1818 in Cupar, FIF, SCT and he married Isabella BOWIE on 22 Jan 1850 in St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. John and Isabella first daughter (2nd child) Mary Davidina Brown GRAINGER was b. 8 Jan 1852 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland (bp 18 Feb 1852 in St Bernards Church, West Claremont Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland). David BROWN, late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool. Page 583. It would seem that Mary was given the "Brown" Given Name after the Rev. David BROWN. I maybe wrong here and it maybe that the "Brown" came from a relationship to your Line. As we both have GRAINGER and MARSHALL connections I think that we may have a connection between you GRAINGER Line and my GRAINGER Line. Would you like to swap Files to see if we can find a match? 3. [Sorry if this is a bit long, but I thought I needed to explain a bit more were I am up to]. Hi Elaine, Tom and List, Thanks to both of you for your reply. For 12 years now I have been trying to identify which John GRAINGER married Isabella BOWIE. The only definite information I have on my 2 x Great Grandfather John GRAINGER / GRANGER is that he married Isabella BOWIE on 22 Jan 1850 in St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. According to the IGI John GRAINGER was born 30 Jul 1826 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. For many year the IGI did not show a place of birth but recently Cupar has been added (I assume from the 1881 Census that shows he was born in Cupar). This information comes from the LDS with the follow note: - "LDS Church membership record of a deceased person. The original records cannot be sent to family history centres. The records of members who died before 1988 can be viewed at the Family History Library. These records cannot be photocopied. Information for members who died after 1988 is available only on the Internet version of the IGI. Married women may be indexed under their maiden or married surnames. Early LDS Church ward or branch records. The entry may be hard to find because the source does not have a page number index and because the names, dates, and places may be different on the film than in the IGI entry." The IGI for the British Isles show 45 John GRAINGER / GRANGER born / christened between 1824 and 1828 any of who could be "My" John. If anyone one the list can identify any of these as being connected to their Line I would appreciate it if you could let me know as it will help me to eliminate some of the 45 John GRAINGER / GRANGER that are shown. I have had 2 professional researcher have a look for a John GRAINGER / GRANGER 30 Jul 1826. One researcher had a look in Cupar and the other in Edinburgh and both reported their is no birth or christening of a John GRAINGER / GRANGER on 30 Jul 1826. There is a John GRAINGER recorded as being in the Fife Militia and DURHAM's Defencibles (the DURHAM Defencibles regiment was named for Col. James DURHAM and was disbanded in 1799) so he might that the father of "my" John. It is possible that the John who was in the Fife Militia and DURHAM's Defencibles was born in Scotland, somewhere in England or Ireland as the Defencibles were in many places during their short history. The Old Parochial Registers at the General Register Office for Scotland show the following for the christening of John's 2nd child (1st daughter): - 18th February 1852 John GRAINGER Ship Porter residing at No. 1 Cumberland Street Lane and Isabella BOWIE his Spouse had a Daughter Born there on the Eight day of January last _ Named Mary Davidina Brown GRAINGER Baptized on the Sabbath Twenty Second February current in St Bernard's Church by the Rev. David BROWN, late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool. Page 583. It would seem that Mary was named after the Rev. David BROWN and because the Rev. BROWN was "late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool" maybe there is a connection of "my" GRAINGER / GRANGER back to Liverpool or some other place in England or Ireland where the Fife Militia and DURHAM's Defencibles were. The help of Elaine, Tom or anyone else on the Lists who can help me to identify my 2 x Great Grandfather John GRAINGER / GRANGER would be very much appreciated. Talk to you later. Best regards, Ian Butterworth. The FreeCEN 1841 census shows the family: - Piece: SCT1841/685/2 Place: Edinb.St Andrew-Midlothian Enumeration District: 88 Civil Parish: St Cuthbert's Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: St Cuthbert's Folio: 88 Page: 2 Address: Castle Bank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks GRAINGER Hugh M 40 Carter Outside Census County (1841) GRAINGER Agnes F 40 Midlothian GRAINGER John M 15 Midlothian GRAINGER Elisabeth F 10 Midlothian GRAINGER Margret F 8 Midlothian GRAINGER Agnes F 12 Midlothian GRAINGER Jenet F 6 Midlothian BROWN James M 35 Carter Midlothian You will also notice that there is a James BROWN living with the family (may be a brother of Agnes?). For 10 year I have been trying to ID my 2 x Great Grandfather John GRAINGER who married Isabella BOWIE on 22 Jan 1850 in Saint Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. I think I may finally found "my" 2 x Great Grandfather John GRAINGER with the help of FreeCEN. Now the 2 child (first daughter) was baptised Mary Davidina Brown GRAINGER by the Rev. David BROWN (late minister of the Scottish Church in Liverpool. Is there anyone on the List who is connected to Hugh GRANGER and Agnes BROWN or any of there descendants? If there is I would sure love to hear from you. Talk to you later. Best regards, Ian Butterworth Reservoir Victoria Australia --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. His father was named James Grainger, and he had an older brother named William, born around 1840. John and William's mother was named Emma (Grainger may have been her maiden name), according to John's death certificate. I did find my John Grainger, his wife Elizabeth nee Cox and their children in the 1881 census, living at Wallace Street, Kingswinford, Stafford, England. Then, the lead dries up. He and his family eventually emmigrated to West Virginia/Eastern Ohio, then to Alabama between 1885 and 1895.
