    1. [GOUDIE] Stray... John GOUDIE
    2. John Gowdie
    3. Hi List, Does this stray belong to your family? This John GOUDIE was discovered whilst searching the Public Records Office Victoria (Australia) Inquest Deposition Files. According to the proceedings of his inquest (#1895/1252) on 16 Oct 1895 at the Morgue in Melbourne he was the second mate of the barque "Killarney" berthed at No. 25 Shed, Australian Wharf. He was on a plank over the side of the ship marking it in readiness for painting when he fell off and into the Yarra river and drowned. It was said he had no relatives in Victoria and was a native of Liverpool, England. He died on 14 Oct 1895 aged 21 years, therefore b: c1874. If this stray is yours then a copy of the inquest papers are available on line at http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/ alternatively I can email a copy to you off list. -- Cheers, John Gowdie Melbourne, VIC, AUS

At this moment I await DNA testing results. To date there is a definite FN of 30,000 years when my ancestors crossed what is now the Bering Sea. In my research I have often found the same variant in the archives in Victoria yet no connection to the extended family. Hudson's Bay Co. connections abound in the family history. Author: edersee Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goudie/47.4.1.1.2.1.1.1.1.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello I'm new to this board so hope I'm not repeating old information. Our family tree has Maj Gen Francis Goudie, son and grandson of Scottish Reformation ministers (John Goudie/Gowdie). The General served with British forces in India, returned to Scotland about 1814 and died there (Priorbank). His brother Walter Gowdie/Goudie was a surgeon with Honourable East India Company, died in India in 1793. A link to this family is surname Andrew, of which John Alexander Andrew Jr born 1840 in India ended up on Vancouver Island, BC in 1859. He married Helen "Kate" Woods and they had several children. John Andrew was a clerk with Hudson's Bay Co. but died young, about 1890. I noticed an old post on this board (2001) that pertained to Goudie in Victoria BC - perhaps there's a link here. If anyone is following this line I'd be very happy to share info! Marion Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
