I have a feeling I'm boring you to death over this but I love a good mystery and I keep trying to unravel things. I looked at the obituary of Samuel Gideon Goren - listed as a survivor was his (step) brother, Charles E Magers. So, last night, instead of getting needed beauty sleep, I started like a bloodhound tracking Charles E. His mother was Sarah Reynolds Gorin/Goren Magers so if I found him - I might find his mother and other family members. 1900 Justice, Grayson, TX census. House 967-98: Magers, William, head, male, born Aug 1844, age 55, widowed, born KY Ollie A, daughter, white, female, born Aug 1886, age 13, single, born IL James M, son, white, male, born Feb 1885, 12, single, born IL Charles E, son, white, male, born June 1889, age 10, single, born IL. OK - that told me where the family was from 1885-1900 - in IL, likely in the same county. That also gave me the first name of Sarah Ellen Reynolds Gorin's 2nd husband and that she died sometime between June 1889 and June/July 1900.I cannot yet find William, Ollie or James M's death places. So I moved on to Charles E - what had happened to him? In Samuel Gideon Goren's obit, Charles E was in Lubbock. I then found his death certificate. He was born 28 June 1889 in IL, son of William C Magers and Sarah Reynolds. He died of acute heart failure 29 Nov 1963 at home, 620 South 7th Street, Slaton, Lubbock, TX. He was in the furniture business in Lubbock as a salesman. He was shown as a widower, buried through the Williams Funeral Home in Slaton and buried at the Englewood Cemetery. Thankfully, that cemetery is on line! His stone reads Charles E Magers 1889 - 1963. Buried beside him is Elmina Magers, 1891 - 1962 (belive 31 Dec). I can't find her death certificate yet, but still looking. Next, I found his WWI draft card. He was living in June of 1917 at RFD 1, Whitenight, TX; birth date agrees, said he was born in Galesburg IL. OK, so that's where Sarah Reynolds Gorin/Goren & her second hubby were living - (Can't find them on the census yet but the 1890 is missing and by 1900 - they were in TX . He is shown as a farmer and says he has a wife and child. He appeared in Grayson, TX. Then, I found a descendant in Lubbock on line and have written her. She stated that Charles E was in fact born at the date shown in Galesburg, Knox Co IL. Knox is adjacent to Warren Co IL where we found the Goren clan. He married on 17 Apr 1906 Elmina Marshall. OK - going to try to find that marriage. Charles E was a Justice of the Peace in Precinct 3 in Grayson Texas at one time, in 1920 he lived in Leonard, Fannin, TX; in 1930 he lived in Precinct 2, Lubbock TX. The child listed in his draft card was Elmer Edward Magers 1907-1979 who married Annie Lillie Watkins (1911-1994). I'm hoping the gal I wrote in Lubbock is of this family. Eventually I'm hoping to meet or email with a living Magers descendant that might have some memory of Ray Harry Gorin or Ollie or J M Magers or the missing bros of Samuel Gideon - William and Joshua. This gives you an idea of how I work doing genealogical researching - one thing leads to another. If it bores you - sorry but thought you might be interested! Sandi Col.
