It doesn't take a lot to make me happy when I find a new tidbit of information. I mentioned in a previous email that a lady in Tazewell Co IL has been helping me track some some information on the Sanford Pell Gorin family there. Well, she just wrote me and found something else. When Sanford came to Tazewell Co from KY he brought a slave with him named Black Jack of whom one of our listers knows of. It was noted that he was buried in the family plot in Washington IL, highly unusual but did happen when a slave was especially loved. The lady there took a LOT of photos for me of the cemetery but could not find anything of Black Jack. So she did the following: "I just received the following email from the Tazewell Co. Genealogical and Historical Society that I think you will find the response interesting. "I just found an interesting item. You mentioned "Black Jack" who came from KY with Sanford Gorin and was probably buried in the family plot. (Page 35 & page 21 under Partials) In row 24 lot 3 there is a Jack _____ who died Oct 5, 1867 age 52. The stone was listed in the 1968 survey, but I could not find his stone in 2003. This is very possibly Black Jack. For what it is worth, I think the responder is right on target. Jane Gorin is in the 1860 federal census in Washington and she is the "head of the family". The last entry under her is Jack Gorin, age 42, born Kentucky, black, male. This would make him born about 1817. So I would lay odds that the reference to the individual above, which can't be far from where Sanford is buried, is probably Black Jack." I have been told many times that if a slave master was a good guy and really provided for his slaves, after emancipation that they kept as their last name that of their former master. Maybe this speaks well of Sanford! Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - Publishing: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/ GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin
