I know it's been months since I sent anything to you guys; it's been rather hectic. I meant to update you earlier but ... We've experienced a miracle with Kris. After being told that it might be 2-5 years before she could get a kidney transplant (and already being about 8 months before she got on the list originally), Kris & Bill decided to take a mini vacation at Dale Hollow Lake which is south of where I live. On the 2nd or 3rd day they called and said that the next day (Sunday), they would be heading back home but were going to go to church with me here - they know our pastor and the music minister very well. A few hours later Kris called me and said "change of plans - we're going to Louisville". My mind went blank as to why and she said "Jewish Hospital has a kidney" They had to check out, load up and drive maybe 3 plus hours to get to Louisville before 9 pm. I told Kris not to get her hope up - they had been told that there might be a lot of calls and still not get the kidney. Bill called me at 11 and said they were checking Kris in a room; she had been undergoing every test in the book. He called me back later and told me that Kris was going to get the kidneys - two of them. It seems that on Saturday morning there had been a car accident and the parents of the victim in one car donated her daughter's kidneys. The daughter was 16 months old! Transplant from a child (normally over the age of 2) is still quite rare and only a few hospitals are certified for this type of transplant. Both kidneys are transplanted since they are so tiny, along with the arteries, etc - it's called an "en bloc" transplant. Kris went into surgery on the next day, 4 1/2 hour surgery and then 3 hours into recovery. She came home Thursday of that week! So far everything is going perfectly and we're trusting it will continue. Those tiny kidneys will grow to adult size in one year and one of the surgeons said that the main reason Kris was able to be the recipient (besides being a blood type match etc), is that she is short! Now my gals always wanted to be taller, but Kris is about 5 feet tall. The kidneys could not be transplanted into a large person; too much of a strain. So we're thankful she's short!! Kris feels good, is on anti-rejections meds (3 twice a day), her blood count, blood pressure, weight - everything is doing wonderful - and the kidneys are working well. She has to go back to Jewish Hospital once or twice a week and have blood drawn each time to be sure her blood count is satisfactory. She wears a mask when outside or around a lot of people. We are so very thankful to put it mildly, it was an answer to a lot of prayers! Additionally we have made contact with the donor's parents and Bill & Kris have met the mother; Kris has met both parents. The mother is very sweet; has a 3 month old baby who has a broken leg from the accident; and she has had 4 surgeries on her legs; just was discharged today. It was a time of healing for them to know that precious Daphnie saved Kris' life. So - I'm behind with life! My 94 year old Mom fell the next day after Kris' surgery and is in a nursing home undergoing therapy - has been there a month next Sunday. I didn't get to see Kris until Mother's Day and seeing her healthy was the best Mother's day gift I could ever ask for. I haven't had time to do any Gorinology lately but hopefully soon! Sandi
