The gal in Tazewell Co IL found a few newspaper items on the Gorin clan and I thought I'd pop in and share them since it's been way too quiet on this list! >From the Tazewell Independent, 25 Sept 1879: "On Monday night Miss Lizzie Gorin celebrated the attainment of her eighteenth birthday at the residence of her father, J. G. Gorin, Esq. A gay company of young people, numbering no less than forty, came together to do honor to the occasion. During the eveing ice cream, cake, and other delicacies were served, and a most delighful and enjoyable time was had.. He Independent sincerely wishes Miss Lizzie many happy returns of the day." (This is the grandau of Sanford Pell Gorin). >From the Washington Investigator, Thurs, 11 Mar 1858. "Administrator's Notice. Notice is hereby give that on Friday the 12th day of March next, we will attend before the county court of Tazewell county, at 10-o'clock, A.M., for the purpose of settling and adjusting all claims against the estate of S. P. Gorin late of said county, deceased; when and where all claimants are require to present their demands for adjustment. All persons indebted to said estate are also notified to make payment to the undersigned without delay." /s/ John G. Gorin, M. E. Davidson, Adminstrators. Same paper: "Married. On Monday evening, March the 8th, inst. by the Rev. Wells Andrew. Mr. John G. Gorin to Miss Julia E Word, of Washington. To the lovely Julia and our friend John, who have committed that awful deed, matrimony, the printers tender their humble acknowledgements for a portion of the spoils - acompanied with the ardent hope that the myrtle tree may ever flourish between them, and its fruit bless the labor of their hands. - Could that happy couple have seen our somidance with delight, as our eyes rested on the gold dollar and the golden cake that a friendly hand laid on our table, they'd a known that printers have feelings. They took the cars for New York the same night. Our best wishes attend them." Editor They don't write wedding announcements like that any more! It doesn't take a lot to make me happy when I find a new tidbit of information. I mentioned in a previous email that a lady in Tazewell Co IL has been helping me track some some information on the Sanford Pell Gorin family there. Well, she just wrote me and found something else. When Sanford came to Tazewell Co from KY he brought a slave with him named Black Jack of whom one of our listers knows of. It was noted that he was buried in the family plot in Washington IL, highly unusual but did happen when a slave was especially loved. The lady there took a LOT of photos for me of the cemetery but could not find anything of Black Jack. So she did the following: "I just received the following email from the Tazewell Co. Genealogical and Historical Society that I think you will find the response interesting. "I just found an interesting item. You mentioned "Black Jack" who came from KY with Sanford Gorin and was probably buried in the family plot. (Page 35 & page 21 under Partials) In row 24 lot 3 there is a Jack _____ who died Oct 5, 1867 age 52. The stone was listed in the 1968 survey, but I could not find his stone in 2003. This is very possibly Black Jack. For what it is worth, I think the responder is right on target. Jane Gorin is in the 1860 federal census in Washington and she is the "head of the family". The last entry under her is Jack Gorin, age 42, born Kentucky, black, male. This would make him born about 1817. So I would lay odds that the reference to the individual above, which can't be far from where Sanford is buried, is probably Black Jack." I have been told many times that if a slave master was a good guy and really provided for his slaves, after emancipation that they kept as their last name that of their former master. Maybe this speaks well of Sanford! Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - Publishing: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/ GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin
There is a dear lady who lives in Washington (Tazewell Co) IL by the name of Carol who found my Gorin website on line. She has been blessing me with some of the most wonderful information and photographs. She lives in Washington and lives very close to the old city cemetery (Old Glendale) and the Glendale Cemetery where a LOT of our Gorin family is buried. She has gone to the cemetery three days in a row shooting pictures for me and helping out. She has no Gorin ties but became familiar with the family more helping someone else with an Anthony line who ties in with our Gorin's. Sanford Pell Gorin, son of Henry and Sarah Pell Gorin, moved to Washington IL very early and raised a large family there. He was the brother of my daughters' line and I have a goodly amount of correspondence between he and his siblings. Carol has sent me photographs of the following gravesites: Sanford Gorin family plot, Virginia Gorin Davidson (d/o Sanford), Helen A (Hellena Davidson (granddaughter of Sanford), Julia Gorin, Julian Edward Wood, John H. Anthony, John Gladin Gorin (s/o Sanford), John Albro Anthony, Mary W Gorin, Ellen M Gorin (Nellie, d/o John G), Elizabeth Gorin, Sanford Pell Gorin, Mary E B Crane, Josiah P. Wood, Josephine Gorin Wood, Guy Worcester Wood, George W. Crane, Ellen Mary Wood, Eliza E Davidson Jones, Crane family plot, daughter of Josiah Wood. All of these are sons/ grandsons/wives/grandchildren of Sanford. A few weeks back, another gal from southern IN connected with me on the Davidson family from here in Barren Co who moved to Eureka, Woodford, IL and one of their sons, Marshall, married Sanford's daughter, Virginia C (who is buried as noted above). She sent me photographs of the graves of Martha Glazebrook Davidson (wife of Caleb), Marhall and Mary Davidson, Clara L Davidson, Caleb Davidson, Clara Gorin, along with photos of the Caleb Davidson family in 1902, Marshall Davidson with dau Clara and a portrait of James D. Davidson. This covers the Woodford and Tazewell Co IL Gorin family beautifully. Carol above is also sending me more obituaries on the Gorin deaths in Washington IL which gives a peak inside the lives of our early ancestors. As my dau Kris is supposed to be married in June, I will be starting on another volume of the Gorin chronicles after that time. I have about 100 pages of new data plus all these pictures. I'm so thankful for the kindness of people, sometimes unrelated, who help make our family tree more personal! Sandi
A quick note before I crash - fighting off "something" that has had me down about a week. Check out the below website from the VA government site. Has a massive list of burials for soldiers who are buried in military cemeteries. I found about 10 or so of our Gorin's - gives their rank and branch of service, birth and death dates, cemetery, location in the cemetery, a link to that cemetery. Not just VA soldiers - all of them. http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 A sweet gal in McLean Co IL has been working with me tonight after finding my Gorin website. She filled in a ton of blanks for me on the descendants of Sanford Pell Gorin who moved to Washington, Tazewell, IL - he was a brother of John Darns Gorin of my daughters' line. She sent a lot of obituaries too and eventually I'll get them posted. I have just updated my Gorin gedcom on World Connect (URL is in my signature line) with the new information too. A belated Happy New Year and best wishes for the coming year! Sandi' Col. I just wanted to stop by to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you Gorin kin. I've been taking a little time off from my regular work for others and found some new Gorin data that some of you might be interested in and want to list it below: History of Tood and Christian, Kentucky, Historical and Biographica, Chicago, F A Batty, 1884, p. 60: (Todd Co). On May 8, 1820, pursuant to the act of General Assembly forming the county, James Glenn, Robert Coleman, HENRY GORIN,...... met at the house of James Kendall and organized the first magisterial court of Todd County. McReynolds; entered the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in 1847; ....... he has been twice married, first to Miss Julia P. Gorin in 1858, who died the same year...." Henry spoken of in the first citation was Henry Gorin, brother of John and Gladin. That's it for this year! Sandi
You never know when and where information will pop up. I recently was web browsing and saw a family tree on the Davidson family; in particular Marshall Emory Davidson. I knew that this Davidson family had come from Glasgow KY and is well known here. I have been corresponding with the publisher of this web site, Rebecca Davidson who has been an abundant source of information. Marshall Emory Davidson married Virginia Catherine Gorin, daughter of Sanford Pell Gorin and Martha Ann or Jane Gant. Sanford was the son of Henry and Sarah Pell Gorin and brother to John Darns Gorin. John D Gorin had settled in Vandalia IL when it was the capitol of IL and died there. Sanford and his family moved up to Woodford/Tazewell Co IL as did the Davidsons from here; they appeared to be part of the "traveling church" coming out of the oldest Baptist church here in Barren Co, Mt. Tabor. Marshall's father was Caleb Davidson and his entire family ended up in what is now Eureka IL. Rebecca sent me some notes from the Christian Church (Church of Christ) at Eureka and among the constituting members (1st members) were Richard B and Isabel McCorkle. "Richard Blythe McCorkle, the other founding elder, was born in North Carolina in 1786. In 1811 he married Isabel Campbell who had been born in Lincoln County, Ky, in Lebanon County, Tenn. They came to southern Illinois and then on to Tazewell County in the twenties. They were living in Holland's Grove when the church was organized. A son, J.B. Mc Corkle, later moved to Walnut Grove and lived on a farm south of Eureka College." Richard B's son Miles Blythe McCorkle married Martha Ann Gorin, another daughter of Sanford Pell Gorin. In another paper sent to me by Rebecca is the History of Eureka by Annie E. Davidson. She names the early settlers of what became Eureka which included the Majors, Dickinsons, Radfords, Davenports, Deweeses, Atterberries, Davidsons as the leading "spirits". All of these families came from Barren Co and the Atterberry family is my aunt's line. The Davidson farm was later deeded to Eureka College where they were among the founders. It is amazing sometimes to find little tidbits like this; my own family came from Logan Co IL and we lived in Peoria IL for some time; but I was too young in genealogy at that time that a few miles north of us were Gorin descendants. You all know that when I post, I'm trying to give you new information on the Gorin clan. Well, I have some news of my own tonight. I'm going to be a mother-in-law again! My oldest dau, Kris, has accepted the proposal of the long time love of her life, Bill Henderson, of Campbellsville KY. He is an outstanding young man and so good to our family. He comes from a wonderful family in northern OH and his mother loves genealogy! Could I ask for more? Bill is the pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Campbellsville KY. He and Kris have dated for several years and Bill has been considered part of our family for some time. No date has been set at the present time but I hope the details will be soon coming! I am so happy for them both and I will be blessed to have two outstanding sons-in-law to go with my special daughters. Sandi Col. First - it appears that you can't pull the information from ancestry.com unless you're a subscriber. That used to be a freebie, but it appears there is now a charge for it. I'm so sorry ... One of the greatest puzzles on the Henry Gorin line is on the Pells. We know that Sarah Pell, wife of Henry, was the granddaughter of one Richard Pell. He was known lovingly as the pig killer who fled or was forced to America. Stack that up against one of the meanings of the name Gorin which is "he who keeps pigs and dwells at the foot of the moutain". Think that one through - a marriage made in heaven! Anyway Dick Grigg is a Pell descendant and a Mormon and has been working for many years for documentation of the original Richard Pell's being a pig killer and arriving here in America. It's always been "oral history" and unproven. Here is what he found: Hi Folks, I recently put a querie on the Surrey, England Genealogy Forum and amazingly got an answer from William Hartley This was the original post made by Dick: Posted By:Dick and Angie Grigg Email: Subject:Richard Pell the pig killer Post Date:November 02, 2005 at 15:45:58 Message Looking for information on 3 men who were convicted of pig steeling in 1737 Richard Pell, James Matthews and Nathaniel Price. All were sentenced to Transportation and sent to Virginia. Here is the data that he was provided: Court Record as follows: > > Then in the first bundle I chose at random, after > only about half an hour's > searching I came across Richard Pell. I nearly > missed him because he is the > last of three people to be listed on quite a small > document. I couldn't > believe my luck, though the information in the > document is rather limited. It > reads:- > > 'Surry The Jurors for our Lord the King upon > their oath present that James > Matthews late of the Parish of St Mary Magdalen > Bermondsey in the County of > Surry Labourer Nathaniel Price late of the same > Labourer and Richard Pell > late of the same Labourer on the twenty third day of > ffebruary in the tenth > year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the > Second now King of Great > Britain [i.e.1737] &c[?] with force and arms at the > parish aforesaid in the > county aforesaid one pigg of price value of ffive > shillings of the goods and > chattells of one John Valentine then and there being > found feloniously did > steal take and carry away against the peace of our > said Lord the King his > Crown & dignity. > Michells' > > The following note in a different hand appears > against each of the three > accused: 'Pnts [Presents?] himself &c[?]- Guilty - > no chattels To be > transported for seven years'. So, the story is true. The term "late of so and so" meant formerly of. What a find and I'm thankful Dick Grigg pursued this. It was noted by another researcher that she had the same information and a copy of the sheepskin upon which the above was written! So the pig killer came to America, had children, one of whom (believed to be Richard Jr) married and had Sarah Pell who married our Henry. Sandi Col. I can barely stand the wait! Last Saturday while I was set up at a genealogical/historical book fair over in Greensburg KY, I was talking to a gal named Colleen Olsen who was also a distributor there. We have met before and hit it off; she is an archaeological cave specialist, a tour guide at Mammoth Cave and an author - I have her two books. She told me that there is a new book coming out, yet unnamed, done by a world famous author, Roger Brucker. You might not have heard of him unless you're interested in caving, but my girls and I met him in 1991 at the 50th Anniversary of Mammoth Cave becoming a national park. We were listening to the retired tour guides telling tales of interesting (and spooky) things that have occurred at the cave, and we were entralled - Franklin Gorin owned the cave of course for a period of time. After the presentation, the cave historian, Bob Ward, wanted to introduce us to an author who was there, Roger Brucker. He immediately recognized the last name and asked about the girl's cousin "Tank" who owns Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville TN. And then he and Bob arranged for us to go deep into the cave on a private tour to see Gorin's Dome. Anyway, Roger has authored several books on caves, 3 of which I have, "The Longest Cave" (Mammoth), and "Trapped", the story of Floyd Collins who was trapped and died in Sand Cave in the 1920's nearby, and one more whose title I've forgotten about when they connected Sand Cave and Mammoth Cave. Collen said that 4 of the people at the cave have previewed the book and that it deeply involves our Gorin family! It was written when Franklin, then Dr John Croghan (Bro-in-law of George Rogers Clark and Gorin kin). I went on the internet and did a search for Roger and bingo, had his email address. I was sure he didn't remember me, but would remember Tank so I took a chance and wrote him, never expecting a reply. Within 15 minutes, he replied and we shared quite a few emails that night. The result? He had one more person he wanted to have preview the book and yes! I'm it! This is a novel, his first novel, based on real people and real events spun into a story. The story is seen through the eyes of a little slave girl named Charlotte who was quite real. She worked for Dr. Croghan and lived at Locust Grove (George Rogers Clark family home). She was sent by Dr Croghan (pronounced crone) to Bells' Tavern in Park City KY. Franklin Gorin's sister, married to Robert Slaughter Bell, was there; Robert being the son of the world-famous inn owner, William Bell. Supposedly (truth or fiction I don't know), she was being harrassed there and asked Franklin for help. He bought her and moved her to the cave and there she met Stephen Bishop. Stephen, if you don't know, is still considered the most famous and daring of the cave developers in the world. He was a mulatto, bought by Franklin from a Bishop family here in Glasgow. Franklin educated him; Stephen spoke several languages, had an extremely analytical mind and was the favorite of all the tourists. Copies of his original maps are still available; he found Gorin's Dome, the Bottomless Pit, the blind cat fish and his name and Charlotte's (whom he married) are smoked into many of the cave walls. Stephen also went by Stephen Gorin too. When Franklin sold the cave, despite Stephen's love for the Gorin family, he chose to stay with Dr. Croghan who was building a tb hospital inside the entrance to the cave, so he could continued his explorations. The hospital was a disaster and the remains still are in the cave. Stephen supposedly was saving to buy his freedom to Liberia (Franklin had offered him his freedom but he chose to work it out). He died several years later, a very young man and eventually Charlotte remarried to another one of the slave guides there. I'm hoping that Roger was kind to the Gorin family ... not too many skeletons! I told him I'd have to ask him if this was truth or embellishment on any events I didn't know about! It will be about 18 months before the book comes out but hopefully I'll get to read it sooner then! Roger said that I'd recognize most if not all of the names in the book from this area; many family members are mentioned I think. This one will be #1 on my want list! Sandi

You know that I pop in and out here, whenever I find some new information. And boy, did I find more information! As a tribute to Veteran's Day, I've been able to locate the WWII draft registrations and the service records on our Gorin boys. I had a few precious minutes this morning to look at some census records and it hit me how much our Gorin family has traveled, really past the first 2 generations. I ran one family and you can see how distances increased from one generation to the other. I chose John Darns Gorin Sr, son of Henry and Sarah Pell Gorin. He was born in Fairfax Co VA and moved with his family from there to the Lexington Co KY area; then to Barren Co KY for a smidgen of time, then to Warren Co KY, then to Christian Co KY, then to Macon Co IL, then to Fayette Co IL where he died; is buried in Macon Co IL.... the latter two moves being a shorter distance. His children, shown below, didn't move all that far either until we get to his youngest son: Dr Bartley moved from with his family up thru Macon Co IL; he married and died in Pike Co MO.His descendants spread to IL, and east Mariah after marriage to Thomas C Kirkman went to Winchester IL Henry Madison maried Mary Ann Love and settled in Scotland Co MO, dying there. Elvira md Gen Isaac Pugh and stayed in Macon Co IL Jerome Rinald remained after married in Macon Co IL Gladin married and settled in St Louis MO Mary Jane went to Winchester IL after marriage John Darns Jr was the adventurer and spread our family foots. He went to Nevada to work in the silver mines and his family ventured farther away from the home roots. Edith died in 1913 - had lived in San Francisco CA Henry Madison (not the same as above) moved & died in Portland OR Claude - died early Charles M was living in Los Angeles in 1920, but had also lived in Tombstone AZ as a miner there Martha married and lived in Los Angeles Ida May married and lived in Los Angeles Blanch married, died 1901, lived CA John Darns III md Victoria and lived in Santa Barbara Ca Ella married and lived in Los Angeles Since 1920, the miles between family members have increased more and more until, altho a small family, they are to be found in every state plus Paris France. We, today, think nothing of pulling up roots and moving clear across the US ... but think how it would have been in the 1700's, 1800's and early 1900's. Just a little trivia - Sandi
If you had any ancestors in KY, this site will be of great help to you. It has not officially been announced yet so this is a scoop; I know the developer and have been working the site today. The URL is: http://kyvitals.com/vis/search/search_death_recs.php The goal is to get all the KY death certificates (1911-) on file - not just the names and dates but copies of the death certificate. This will be followed with the birth certificates, and then hopefully marriages. Right now there are 25,000 death certificates on the site, and the names and dates of all the deaths 1911- are shown. If there is a certificate on line (which prints out beautifully!), there will be a yes in the right column. If it says no ... the certificate is coming. They are adding about 7,000 certificates a month right now. I checked out the Gorin's since many were still here by 1911, found 2 certificates on line -one is not a Gorin but a Gowrin. The developers are adding some last minute frills including a "post it note" function which will allow the searcher to add a note such as "this is my line, please contact me if you have further information" or "this is not a Gorin but rather a Gowrin", etc. When you enter the name you can search on a particular county (or all) and the name (full name or surname). It will also link with the mother's maiden name also. You might want to bookmark this site and check any surnames you have in KY. I also found a death date today which thrilled me. There is an old Reynolds Cemetery in the Beckton area (Barren Co) that has just a few stones in it and has not been recorded. My dear friend Martha found a newspaper clipping (which I'll try to get a copy of soon) for Nancy Gorin. This is Nancy James, daughter of James James (don't you love that?) and Susan Beckham. Nancy married Rowan Tipton Gorin who was a son of our founder here - John Gorin and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Turpin Duvall. Rowan and Nancy had 3 children - one of which will be of particular interest to Gary on the list ... Susan, Emma and James S. James S married Sarah Ellen Reynolds. The Reynolds intermarried with the James and Gorin family 3 times - they were all neighbors. James and Sarah Ellen's children were Samuel, William and John Rogers Gorin. It is John Rogers Gorin that Gary now knows much more about - it was his family that spelled their name Goren and led to a life-long search for their family. Thankfully, Gary found my files on line and everything matched up showing that his John R Goren was our John Rogers Gorin. This was one very happy reunion! So - try your kin in KY after 1911 (this is when KY began keeping birth and death records) and see if you find anything. To be able to see the actual certificate is so much better than just having the name and date on file! My best - Sandi
First - I'm sorry for the long delay in posting to the list. Life gets complicated sometimes ... including a 21 day stay in the hospital for my 90 yr old Mom who took a serious fall, some dental work, one daughter trying to find work (did) and housing (did not yet) in another town, office work and age! But, I guess I have everyone around here well trained in looking for Gorin material and when I went to the post office this morning, the desk clerk (distant kin of the Gorin's) handed me a newspaper clipping which some of you in Gladin's line will be interested in. John Henry Gorin Jr was born about 1818 in Warren Co KY - likely right in Bowling Green. He was the grandson of Gladin and Nancy Hinch Gorin, son of John Henry Gorin Sr and Elizabeth Bailey Jones. He married first Melvina Austin 30 May 1843; she died and is buried here in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery along with one or two of their children. John Henry Jr moved back and forth between Glasgow in Barren Co and Bowling Green - 35 miles or so. I pick him him up here in a couple of citations - he was into horses and also suffered a financial setback over a patent for an agricultural implement if I remember right; was sued once over this. John H Jr married secondly to Helen Dodd 11 May 1854 here in Glasgow. Helen and he had 6 children of record - Helen is buried in TX. All I had on John H Jr was then his date of death, being 12 Feb 1868 - age 50. Well, here is the rest of the story. >From the Lexington (KY) Observer & Reporter, Semi-Weekly, Lexington, KY, Saturday, Feb 22, 1868, p. 2, column 1: Suicide. About 10 o'clock last Wednesday morning Mr. John H. Gorin, a highly respected citizen of this place, committed suicide by shoting himself through the head with a pistol. No cause is assigned for the act. When he went to his home Tuesday evening he complained of feeling unwell - thought he had probably had a chill during the day; but otherwise seemed perfectly at himself. It appears that while in his room alone at the time stated he got up in his night clothes and commited the fatal deed while standing in front of a large mirror. Mr. Gorin leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely end, to whom we tender our heartfelt sympathies for their sad bereavement. At the time of his death Mr. Gorin was Deputy City Marshall, and commanded the highest respect from all who knew him." Reported from the Bowling Green Democrat (newspaper). What a tragic story! Is this when Helen and the family moved to TX? What could have caused him to do this? We likely will never know but it answers a question a lot of us have had for many years. If you hurry - until June 10th you can get to the site below and check any of your family members who were in the Civil War. It was a free thank you from ancestry.com thru a PA site. I've checked out the Gorin's but if you have other family members who served in the Civil War - click on the URL and work your way thru. Sandi http://www.pacivilwar.com/freepension.html .
