It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of Eleanor Carlson Gorin Skagg of Greensburg, KY. Eleanor was a precious lady, intelligent, loving and a delight to her family. The last time I was able to see her was 2 years ago in Greensburg. She died last Friday at the Univeristy of Louisville Hospital where she had been for a time. Born 6 March 1915, she was the daughter of John Nicholas Carlson and Elin Amanda Olson Carlson. She was married to Jameson Dearen Gorin 16 Aug 1941 who died 25 Oct 1963. She later married Alfred Paul Skagg 22 Sept 1872 who preceded her in death also 3 May 1978. Eleanor was the former Greensburg Record-Herald publisher and columnist, served on the library board, was responsible with others in the restoration of the old courthouse in Greensburg, loved local history, was a wonderful artist and in the later years of her life earned a master of public service degree from WKU. She attended Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church; leaves a son Walt and 2 beautiful granddaughters, Jill and Michelle. Eleanor was a delightful lady, a southern lady through and through and our family admired her greatly. Our condolences to her family; they are very special to all of us. Sandi Col. One of the most intriguing Gorin's in my files is John Tilton "Big Top" Gorin. He was the son of Thompson B and Emily Runner Gorin, great-great grandson of Gladin and Nancy Hinch Gorin. He was born 25 Oct 1876 in Bowling Green KY and died 29 Mar 1940 same. The reason for the intrigue is that his nickname indicated his occupation; he was a circus promoter. I have had for many years a picture of John T out of a Bowling Green KY pictoral history, but this photo was taken in a play and he was dressed up as a woman with a big sun bonnet and dress with apron. He was looking downward and it was hard to see what he really looked like - although it was obvious that he was tall and strong jawed. Saturday, my best friend and fellow genealogist went on what is known as the Roller Coaster Yard Sale - a many miles long yard sale stretching from KY into TN. She stopped at a sale in Temple Hill KY and a lady there was selling a lot of old pictures. Most of them just had the first name of the individual on the back, if any, but Martha - ever looking out for her family and ours, picked up a wonderful picture, in perfect condition of a handsome tall man with a strong jaw. On the back it said Jno Gorin. She bought it for me and just dropped it off. I took one look and bingo, it's Big Top Gorin. A handsome man, the picture was taken in the early 1920's perhaps based on his attire. We have no idea of why someone in Barren Co would have his photo but I'm glad that Martha took the time to look them over! Isn't genealogy great? I'll be in Frankfort KY this Friday and Saturday; I am putting on a 2-hour, televised presentation on genealogy publishing. There are over 100 who are scheduled to be there in person; the local access channel is showing my program and then taping it. This will be fun - a transplanted Yankee speaking before a lot of southerners ... hope they can understand me. Wish me well! Sandi
Now - another "goodie" Google also has thousands of books on line! Go to: http://books.google.com/ I had to work my way through this one. IF the book is out of copyright, the entire book is there and you can download it to your computer and/or print it off. If it's still under copyright, they will just show you the page(s) where your surname is listed, but many times that is enough. When you do your search (under the box where you type in the surname) you can have it search for ALL references to that name (or location or event likely), or just for the ones that are downloadable. I did my Gorin search and found about 7 hits that I could print off. I didn't need the whole book at this time, just the citation. The ones I found dated back to the mid to late 1800's up to more current times - some wonderful finds! Sandi Col. I recently learned of google placing thousands of newspapers on line. It was discussed by Eastman in his daily column (get on his list, it's free and it's good). The link to his website is below. http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/google_offers_o.html He explains the new google service and has a link to googlenewspapers. In brief, it's great, but partial. You can do a search for a name and it will give you an abstract of part of the article. To get the entire article, you have to pay $2-5 dollars from the paper it appeared in. Sometimes the abstract gives you a lot of info, something just a blurb. I did a quick search on Gorin - 12,000 some entries and I found a lawsuit in Jefferson Co in 1865 with Thomas Jefferson Gorin, James Edward Gorin (his father) and Daniel Ashby (son in law of T J), a divorce in the early 1900's, and several other great articles. But, I couldn't afford to order them all - I THINK once you submit payment on line, they'll open up the entire article for you online. I don't like the paying part but it's great to know if someone you're looking for is listed - then it's up to you! Just for your info ... Sandi
Got your mail Sandy!!! Lois Gorin Cuttone
Got it - Thanks Linda Elms Paul
I got the test Sandi. Thank you for caring so much. Hugs, Gary
I think MOST of the bugs have been eliminated on our Gorin list. If there has been extra chit-chat coming to you from me as I answer emails; this is still a problem; it should go directly to the individual. So pardon this until I mull through the settings and see what I did wrong! If you reply to me and mean it to be private, when you hit reply, double check that the To: address is to me and not to the list. I'll get it right soon, I hope! Sandi
Hi Tani, great to hear from you! No, you won't have a new URL or anything; all the changes are primarily in the administration of the list. I'm so tickled that Kevin reached you and that the results have been great! What a neat thing to even get a home video with your Dad in it! Yes, my oldest daughter, Kris, was married on July 31st and it was a beautiful ceremony! Her hubby, William Scott Henderson was born in northern OH, and is the pastor of Friendship Baptist Church outside of Campbellsville KY. They had dated 7 years (several years on line as his first church was some distance away); and he is quite a wonderful young man - not only a good pastor, but oh, he can do repairs for me. He is very talented in repairs and fix-it-up jobs! Our whole family loves him. They are living in the church parsonage in Campbellsville, 60 miles from here. That leaves me with two wonderful daughters, two wonderful sons-in-law, and me with 2 cats! Take care Tani! Sandi
Hi, Sandi. Yes, it came through in good shape. Have fun with learning new stuff -- it keeps you young! Love, Peggy
Got it! Will there be a new url for us to view? How are you doing? Have things slowed down at all? I think your daughter had a wedding not too long ago. Because of you I am in touch with 2nd and 3rd cousins on the Mortensen side. Kevin found you and you provided my email and things have blossomed from there. Thank you very much Sandi. I even received a CD with home movies that included my father surfing in the late 30's or early 40's (before the way). What a thrill. tani ===================== From: Sandi Gorin <sgorin@glasgow-ky.com> Date: 2006/08/29 Tue PM 03:31:04 CDT To: GORIN@rootsweb.com Subject: [GORIN] A test from Sandi Rootsweb, who runs all my genealogy lists, is in the process of "migrating" lists from an old delivery system to a new one called Mailman. A short article on one of our Gorin clan from Tazewell Co IL - I have more to send, but am slightly tired tonight. My daughter's wedding is Monday and I helped her over in Campbellsville in 94 degree temp unload a huge chunk of her apartment. People from her church (the one her hubby to be pastors) are there now with trucks and cars and cleaning the rest out and she's out of there and on her way back home under wedding day. I don't know how large families do it .... Anyway, after a respite from the wedding - I'll send some more data along - have some really interesting things! Sandi Tazewell County Reporter, Washington, IL, May 3, 1928, Page 1. MISS ELIZABETH GORIN SUFFERING FROM A STROKE OF PARALYSIS Miss Elizabeth Gorin suffered a stroke of paralysis on Monday. She has since recovered somewhat and while one side is affected it is hoped that she will gradually recover the use of her limbs. Miss Gorin lives in the old homstead place of her father the late John G. Gorin, with her sister, Miss Nellie. The family is one of the oldest and best known in our city and they have the sympathy of the community. He is a favorite of mine - was a patent lawyer and I use one of his own inventions every day - he invented the space bar on the typewriter which now is used on computer keyboards too! Sanford P. Gorin and his wife, Jane H. (Gaunt) Gorin, were natives of Kentucky. They settled on a farm near Washington in Tazewell County in 1839. There they lived until 1844 when they moved to Eureka. A few years later they returned to Washington where Mr. Gorin operated a dry-goods store in the brick building later occupied by W. E. Petri. Elder S. P. Gorin preached as occasion required. (Page 155 -- Our Story: Washignton Christian Church, 1834-1994, by Margaret Hamilton, copyright 1998.) Sanford Pell Gorin was son of Henry and Sarah Pell Gorin. The Washington Republican, January 20, 1881. Joe Reckard, of Shelden, another of J. G. Gorin's disciples, was in town last week. Joe is one of the latest but not the least that John has started on the way to railroad glory. Step by step he's climbing up the golden stair and will reach the summit by and by. Some people on whom fortune has smiled look with disdain upon those they have left behind. Not so with Joe. No matter in what position you find him, he is never "to[o] big for his breeches[.]" The Washington Republican, January 13, 1881. J. G. Gorin has turned over to the railroads of this country more competent railroad men than any other one man in the state of Illinois. John took them in their infancy, cared for them, taught them all branches of railroading, and above all to be attentive to business and in all their dealing careful and honest. Dozens of these young men are to-day holding positions of trust in railroad circles, and if there is any gratitude in their hearts they must acknowledge that they are indebted to none other than J. G. Gorin for the position they now occupy. John should receive some recompense for this, and if he don't get it in this world, he'll most likely be remembered [NOTE: remainder of sentence not legible in hard copy or microfilm]. J G Gorin was John Gladin Gorin, son of Sanford above. Sandi
Good morning! I have some new information to post soon, but have been in a whirl getting ready for Kris's marriage and fighting my eye! Thankfully, after 6 weeks, I have most of my vision back in my left eye - my distance vision is fine now - and I can certainly see those awful floaters a lot clearer! I'm supposed to get a new pair of glasses today/tomorrow and then the next surgery will be sometiome between Sept and Nov. Whoope! For those of you on the list who are kin ... attached is a link to our Electric Plant Board website - this is our server. They have just posted a picture of Kris and her hubby to be, Bill Henderson, that you might like to see. Several of you have met Kris many years ago when she was a much younger gal! After I get through the wedding, I'll be posting some more updated information - people just keep writing me and finding more neat Gorin info and I keep finding more on my own. Take care! I've been sort of quiet for the past 2 weeks - I was talked into having one of 2 cataract surgeries down and, unlike many, I didn't jump up and shout "I can see". I still only have 25% healing in the eye, a lot of blurring and it can drive one crazy. But .. I mentioned several weeks ago that I had sent for 5 death certificates for MO. They arrived today, 4 weeks early and it did fill in a lot of blanks. The info is shown below. Our biggest mystery lady now has a father and a date of birth ... but created more problems. Magdalena Rice Lynott. She was the widow of John P Lynot(t) of Louisiana, Pike, MO - and I call her the gypsy lady. On some census reports she shows as being born in Bohemia and her parents same; sometimes born MO. Her date of birth is now known - 25 July 1847. Her son George Lynot(t) gave the information and said that her father was Carl Rice, mother's name unknown. Why wouldn't he know his grandmother's name? And, there is no Carl Rice in MO in 1850 with a 3 yr old dau. Many Bohemians (covers a lot of territory) settled in St Louis and in Louisiana. My dau Shelley found a death record for a Carl August Reisz who died 1881 in St Louis and is buried at Holy Ghost Cemetery. He is not listed there unless the name was unreadable by the transcriber. Lena Rice Lynot(t) died 13 Mar 1922 and is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana, MO - she was the mother of Edith Lynott who married Ernest Bartley Gorin Sr. She died of senility and bronchitis. Joanna Gorin was the widow of Rev Marcellus Gladden Gorin, Presbyterian minister of St Louis; sister to Governor J Proctor Knott (born KY, MO governor). She was born 20 Sept 1840 in Big Springs KY; died 4 Aug 1921 in St Louis of myocaditis and arteriosclerosis. She was the daughter of Joseph Knott (born Baltimore MD) and Maria McMcElroy (born Big Springs). Maude Gorin was the daughter of the above, born 13 Oct 1862, died 29 Nov 1933 in St Louis. She was a spinster lady, born Memphis MO; died of scalp cancer. Edith (Lynott) Gorin, d/o Lena and John P Lynott was born 12 Jan 1868 in Lincoln Co Mo; widow of Ernest BARKLEY (oops) Gorin. We know it's Bartley! Died 11 Sept 1937 in Louisiana MO of coronary thrombosis. Frank Buffum Gorin (bro of Ernest Sr) was born 11 Mar of Apr 1893 (I have the correct date, forgot to look it up!) in Louisiana Mo. His wife shown as Ruby S, he was a salesman. He died 6 Mar 1939 at the VA Hospital, records prepared by the Chief Medical Officer, Veteran's Administration, Jefferson Barracks. Frank lived in Bunker Hill IL. Died of tuberculosis. Sorry! I just found someone and I bet it's the brother of John Rogers Gorin/Goren. Any thoughts? He is listed as William GORN, died April 1940 in Kansas City. The only Gorn shown ... and this is not a common name. Knowing that these certificates are indexed by human beings who might wear bifocals like me ... could this be William Goren/Gorin? I'll leave you alone now! Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - Publishing: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/ GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin
As I've mentioned once before, we have some Goren's in our line - descendants of John Gorin of here in Barren Co and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Turpin Duval - through their son Rowan Turpin Duvall and his wife Nancy James - through their son James S Gorin and his wife Sarah Ellen Rogers. It was here that the name Gorin became changed to Goren accidentally. James S had three sons, one of whom was John Rogers Goren who married Frances Conard. One of their sons was Bryce Goren. On the MO death certificates I cited yesterday, is found: Bryce Goren July 26, 1923 Jackson Kansas City Frances Goren February _, 1941 Jackson Kansas City These are not available on line yet but are orderable for $1.00 each from MO State Archives. I already have an order in for 5 other certificates and can't order any more until I receive these (which might take awhile, it's a new service) ... then I'll order these. Making progress!
