    1. [GORIN] Updates
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I know it's been months since I sent anything to you guys; it's been rather hectic. I meant to update you earlier but ... We've experienced a miracle with Kris. After being told that it might be 2-5 years before she could get a kidney transplant (and already being about 8 months before she got on the list originally), Kris & Bill decided to take a mini vacation at Dale Hollow Lake which is south of where I live. On the 2nd or 3rd day they called and said that the next day (Sunday), they would be heading back home but were going to go to church with me here - they know our pastor and the music minister very well. A few hours later Kris called me and said "change of plans - we're going to Louisville". My mind went blank as to why and she said "Jewish Hospital has a kidney" They had to check out, load up and drive maybe 3 plus hours to get to Louisville before 9 pm. I told Kris not to get her hope up - they had been told that there might be a lot of calls and still not get the kidney. Bill called me at 11 and said they were checking Kris in a room; she had been undergoing every test in the book. He called me back later and told me that Kris was going to get the kidneys - two of them. It seems that on Saturday morning there had been a car accident and the parents of the victim in one car donated her daughter's kidneys. The daughter was 16 months old! Transplant from a child (normally over the age of 2) is still quite rare and only a few hospitals are certified for this type of transplant. Both kidneys are transplanted since they are so tiny, along with the arteries, etc - it's called an "en bloc" transplant. Kris went into surgery on the next day, 4 1/2 hour surgery and then 3 hours into recovery. She came home Thursday of that week! So far everything is going perfectly and we're trusting it will continue. Those tiny kidneys will grow to adult size in one year and one of the surgeons said that the main reason Kris was able to be the recipient (besides being a blood type match etc), is that she is short! Now my gals always wanted to be taller, but Kris is about 5 feet tall. The kidneys could not be transplanted into a large person; too much of a strain. So we're thankful she's short!! Kris feels good, is on anti-rejections meds (3 twice a day), her blood count, blood pressure, weight - everything is doing wonderful - and the kidneys are working well. She has to go back to Jewish Hospital once or twice a week and have blood drawn each time to be sure her blood count is satisfactory. She wears a mask when outside or around a lot of people. We are so very thankful to put it mildly, it was an answer to a lot of prayers! Additionally we have made contact with the donor's parents and Bill & Kris have met the mother; Kris has met both parents. The mother is very sweet; has a 3 month old baby who has a broken leg from the accident; and she has had 4 surgeries on her legs; just was discharged today. It was a time of healing for them to know that precious Daphnie saved Kris' life. So - I'm behind with life! My 94 year old Mom fell the next day after Kris' surgery and is in a nursing home undergoing therapy - has been there a month next Sunday. I didn't get to see Kris until Mother's Day and seeing her healthy was the best Mother's day gift I could ever ask for. I haven't had time to do any Gorinology lately but hopefully soon! Sandi

    1. [GORIN] Franklin Gorin letter
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. A genealogy friend of mine found something that really is of interest to me! Franklin Gorin, as most of you know, was the son of John and Elizabeth Franklin Gorin, founders of Glasgow here where I live. Through the Civil War times, the stress of north vs south was as great as in any southern family. I have told you the story before of Franklin Jr and his joining with John Hunt Morgan after the burning by the Union soldiers of his cabin in Memphis and the murder of his wife and one-year old baby - and of Franklin's daughter being arrested and held in a Federal prison for a year because of her reaction to insults on her brother while owner of Bell's Tavern. This letter fills in some blanks also - remember Franklin was a noted lawyer who practiced here, in Nashville and in Louisville. It is taken from the Kentucky Reveille, L. P. Crenshaw Editor, Glasgow, KY, Friday morning, Feb. 25, 1849 - long before the Civil War had erupted. He had sold Mammoth Cave a few years earlier and his main concern was his law practice, or his service in the KY Legislature. "For the Reville, Glasgow, February 23, 1849. Mr. Editor -- I send you for publication a letter addressed to me by F. Gorin, Esq., upon the subject of slavery in Kentucky. It contains merely the opinions of Mr. Gorin upon the several points mentioned by him, and desire is given to the public in order that they may be fully understood at this time. Very respectfully, Your Friend. "Dear Sir: - I cheerfully comply with your request, to "give you my opinions upon the subject of slavery in Kentucky, in writing." I do it the more readily, because my opinions upon that subject are greatly misunderstood and mis-represented, designedly, I fear by many - I say designedly because, since my return to Kentucky, i have endeavored to be guarded in my language, and have generally used the same words when speaking upon the subject. "(few words missing) ... slavery as it exists in Kentucky, is a constitutional and legal institution. "I believe it is a great evil to the White race, and a great blessing to the slaves. "I do not believe that the Convention has the right to emancipate the slaves, without the consent of their owners, or making compensation to the owners for them. "I admit that the Convention [this would be KY Convention] has the power to emancipate the slaves, without the consent of the owners, and without paying for them; but if they should do so, it would be manifest injustice. "I make a distinction between right and power. Slaves in Kentucky are, by law, property, as much as land or horses. All, I presume, would deny the right and justice to take away from the owners their land and horses; and I suppose no person would deny the power to do this. "I do not believe that slavery, as it exists in Kentucky, is sinful in itself. "I am not in favor of any plan of emancipation that will take away from the owner his slaves, without his consent, or paying their full value, and removing them from the State. "I would not favor any plan that would injure the owner, or deprive him of his rights; neither would I favor any plan that would make the slave's condition worse than it is. "I am opposed to the State creating a debt to pay for the slaves, because of her inability, and its injustice to non-slave-owners. "I am opposed to making any provision in the new Constitution to perpetuate slavery in Kentucky. "I am in favor of a clause in the new Constitution prohibiting the introduction of any more slaves into this State. "I am opposed to preventing owners of slaves, who may desire it, from emancipating their slaves. "These are my opinions on the subject. "I have often said, and again repeat it, that the man who will devise the ways and means of ridding us of slavery, and removing the slaves to some country where they can live, and at the same time give satisfaction, to the owners, will have done more for their country than any man ever performed.. "Very respectiully, yours &c [etc.], F. Gorin" On the next day there was an editorial by Mr. Crenshaw explaining Franklin's letter and in support of same, outlining all the difficulties involved in freeing the slaves, compensation to owners, etc. KY was establishing a 2nd Constitution at this time, this being a primary issue. 3. I've been out of touch for some time - my apologies, but our household has been is a state of disarray for several months, and I've made no more progress on the new Gorin books - waiting for a lot of promised photographs and taking a sabbatical while waiting and recovering from a nasty little virus. Here are some recent finds: Early U S French Catholic Church Records (Druoin Collection) 1695-1954, St. Louis MO marriages. "On the nineteenth of October one thousand eight hundred and 1841 I the undersigned joined in the holy bonds of matrimony Gladin Gorin and Mary C(catherine) Weber." Signature totally a bunch of lines! Witnesses: William Cutler and Lenora? Weber. Gladin here is the son of John Darns Gorin and Martha Thomas of the Henry Gorin line. City Directory entries recently published by ancestry.com Gorin, Frank A, bookeeeper, beds at 179 Union, Memphis TN (1897-1898). Don't know who this is. Gorin, Jerome P. with Standard Oil Co, res. 19 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH, 1889. This is Jerome Pugh Gorin, s/o Jerome Rinaldo Gorin, Henry Gorin line. Gorin, Gladdin, bookkeeper for Tootle, Hanna & Co, resides 914 Wyandotte, Kansas City MO (1879-1881). This would be, I think, son of Gladin and Mary Catherine Weber above. Gorin, J R, stock raiser, Wichita KS 1886-1892. Not sure on this one yet. Gorin, F. P., lab, 308 E 9th Street, Davenport IA 1882-1893. This likely is Frederick Proctor Gorin, son of Rev. Marcellus Gladden and Joanna Knott Gorin. (Henry Gorin line) Gorin, Harold W, clerk, White LIne Central Transit Co, resides Washington, IL, 1892, Peoria IL. This would be s/o John Gladin Gorin and Julia Wood of the Henry Gorin line. Also, Tom Gorin, on our list has been providing many obituaries and information on the Lynott family of Louisiana, Pike Co MO line for which I'm grateful! Back when I can! Sandi Col. 1. [GORIN] Book updates
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I've finished the John Gorin section of the new book until I receive more; am almost done with the Henry Gorin section. But, I do have two problems!! Since I've "hit" John Gorin before, I only have about 50 pages of new data and pictures on him. I need more. If any of you have any pictures etc. on this line, please let me know!!!! I'm begging! The second problem (a good one!) is that both the Henry Gorin and Gladin Gorin sections are huge - each will likely run about 150-175 pages or more. So, I'm going to have to break of the happy Gorin brothers into separate books. Figuring now! I hope to have the bulk of these books done at the end of next week or beginning of the following week. If you have anything you'd like included, please email me and we'll take it from there. I did something interesting yesterday and was waiting for the caretaker at the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery to come over and see what we were doing! There are two Gorin plots at this cemetery, and with the exception of a few, most of these Gorin's were buried previously at either the 1st Presbyterian Church Cemetery (no longer in existence - original cemetery in Glasgow) or the Gorin Cemetery on Washington Street (ditto). Glasgow Muni was originally owned by the Independent Order of Oddfellows and later sold to the city; it's quite beautiful. When the remains (or most often only the stones) were moved from the two older cemeteries; the Gorin family got split up a little. Way in the back of the cemetery, all by herself, is Peggy Gorin, the 18 year old daughter of John and Elizabeth Franklin Gorin. Several of the children of Thomas Jefferson Gorin are buried side by side; their stones are old and fragile, dating ca 1853-4. In the back section are very old stone with John Gorin and some of Franklin's children who didn't live to maturity. Miss Annie Gorin, the youngest daughter of Franklin and his third wife (Deborah Putnam Campbell) had new stones erected for herself, her half-sister Alice Gorin Taylor, her bros/half-brothers - Underwood Gorin and Franklin Jr - and for her father. Her grandfather's stone, John Gorin, is still there but totally unreadable now (he also has a military marker). Her grandmother, Elizabeth Franklin Gorin's stone was stolen (!) either from the Gorin Cemetery or the one at the church. In the old section are the first two wives of Franklin - Louisa Frances Underwood and Frances Cuthbert Garllod Gorin (born London, England). His last wife is buried in the new section. There is also the wife and one child from the Gladin Gorin line who everyone thought was part of the John Gorin family. It is the 2 previous wives of Franklin that are the "problem". Frances' grave is one of those big box vaults, totally unreadable now (but I have the data when I copied it in 1972). And no one knew of Louisa Underwood Gorin's grave. I found it in 1972, and have tried to protect it through the years. But, it is totally covered by grass and dirt now, lying flat. In most cemetery transcriptions the stone is said to be yet another Franklin Gorin, wrong! I met a distant Gorin relative at the cemetery at noon yesterday and we dug - had shovel, weed cutters, flour, etc. He didn't know the stone was there and couldn't find it even when I drew him a map, so decided to show him. We dug away the grass and dirt and found a large stone, broken in many pieces and shattered from years of mowing over it. The flour revealed now only "Loui ", the rest is gone. We left the intact chunk where it was and laid the huge broken piece at its base; hoping that the caretaker's crew won't dump it. She needs a new stone ... but don't know how much it would cost and budget is limited! I imagine we looked curious on our hands and knees digging around a grave! Thanks, Sandi Col. 1. [GORIN] WOULD LIKE YOUR HELP
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I have boxes of documents and photographs of the Gorin clan and their in-laws that I've accumulated since I published the "Gorin Family in Pictures and Print" - not to mention documentation on families. I have to get these sorted through; my family would have no idea of what to do with them though they have great interest. In other words, they wouldn't know what's in book form and what I've come up with later. I'm going to start on a second volume of the pictures and print - I will be able to "cut and paste" more than one document on a page and will have to sort them out as to which line they are descended from. I'll hold the # of pages to 200-250 and fit all I can in this volume. Now, since this also includes photographs of the Gorin clan and related families connected by marriage - I'm opening the door and saying help! Do you have any pictures that you haven't sent me that you would like to have included? Our small family has to be preserved in print or no one will know about us! It can be old pictures, new pictures of more recent events, spouses/parents of the Gorin's, documents such as graduations, organizations belonged to, obituaries, marriages ... it's up to you. If you have a scanner, you can scan the originals and send to me in an email or have copies made of your pictures and snail to me. I'm going to start sorting this afternoon and it will take me a few days to get this organized. Please let me know as soon as you can if you have something you'd like to contribute so I can allow space. It will be divided, as the last book was, into separate sections for descendants of John, Henry and Gladin - the order of their births. Would you help me out here??? You will be given full credit as the submitter; I will not show your address/email address unless you give me permission to. Thanks gang - I've got to clean out things, I've being overrun! Sandi

    1. [GORIN] WELCOME TO A NEW GORIN ON THE LIST - & A SMIDGEN OF NEWS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I am tickled pink to announce that we have a new Gorin on our list as of a few minutes ago. Day before yesterday, I had an email from a John Gorin ... I don't see that name in an email very often. Lo and behold, the last time I saw John, he was about 10 years old and he and his family were here in my home. Betty B - you'll be thrilled to know that one John Oliver Gorin has been bitten by the genealogy bug and is now a subscriber to our list! He is now a married young man with a beautiful wife and tracked me down via the internet. John is the son of James Oliver Gorin, who is the son of my late dear friend Raymond Henry Gorin (who worked with me so many years on the family tree), who was the son of Joseph Bailey Gorin, who was the son of James Henry Gorin, who was the son of Major James J Gorin, who was the son of John Henry Gorin Sr, who was the son of Gladin and Nancy Hinch Gorin. Whew! We're going through a quick course in Genealogy 101 which I teach so often over the state and I think he will be submitting questions to the list and enjoying it! Welcome John! I had to slow down my researching a tad in order to earn a living, but have found a few tidbits. I did find the death certificate on this illusive Ray Harry Gorin - it shows him the son of Samuel "D" Gorin and Maggie Gorin - of whom we still know nothing. I know that's the son Samuel Gideon Gorin listed as his son - VanAlystene TX and all. The family tho didn't provide the information, the VA did, and I think Maggie might have been a figment of bureaucratic misinformation! I also found the death record (but not certificate) on Frederick Proctor Gorin of the Henry Gorin line, who died 27 Sept 1933 in Seattle, King, WA. He is the one who invented the space bar on the typewriter; I have his patent. Without that, we'd have a dickens of a time typing! I found a smidgen on Dr Ephraim J Rice and wife Mary Gorin who lived in Decatur, then Moweaqua IL - again out of the Henry Gorin line. and a little on Franklin Forsythe English and wife Mary Gorin, again of the Henry Gorin line. I'm going through the death records on line, trying to find some of these Gorin's and spouses that I don't have much information on. A gal wrote me day before yesterday and simply said "We have an Elvira Gorin. She married a George Evans and lived in Kansas." I knew them of course and wrote back; her husband is a descendant of Henry Madison Gorin, one of my favorites - brother to Dr. William Bartley Gorin of Louisiana, MO. I have a picture of Henry Madison when he was much older. She attached a photo of "Grandpa Gorin" but wasn't sure which one it was. It was Henry as a younger man - good looking. Gorin, MO is named for him; he is out of the Henry Gorin line too. She said that she had some more older pictures; one was a picture she took of an old oil portrait of a Gorin man. Please, let it be a painting of Dr William Bartley Gorin - there's a lot of us who would flip out over that. I have a picture of John Darns Gorin, father of Henry M - so it might be him, but hope springs eternal! Out of here for a few days; I'm taking a tour tomorrow (likely in the rain) with a group from our church to Bardstown KY - a very old, historic and beautiful town. Later - and if you have any finds ... please write!! Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin

    1. [GORIN] SAME TOPIC - MORE INFO
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I have a feeling I'm boring you to death over this but I love a good mystery and I keep trying to unravel things. I looked at the obituary of Samuel Gideon Goren - listed as a survivor was his (step) brother, Charles E Magers. So, last night, instead of getting needed beauty sleep, I started like a bloodhound tracking Charles E. His mother was Sarah Reynolds Gorin/Goren Magers so if I found him - I might find his mother and other family members. 1900 Justice, Grayson, TX census. House 967-98: Magers, William, head, male, born Aug 1844, age 55, widowed, born KY Ollie A, daughter, white, female, born Aug 1886, age 13, single, born IL James M, son, white, male, born Feb 1885, 12, single, born IL Charles E, son, white, male, born June 1889, age 10, single, born IL. OK - that told me where the family was from 1885-1900 - in IL, likely in the same county. That also gave me the first name of Sarah Ellen Reynolds Gorin's 2nd husband and that she died sometime between June 1889 and June/July 1900.I cannot yet find William, Ollie or James M's death places. So I moved on to Charles E - what had happened to him? In Samuel Gideon Goren's obit, Charles E was in Lubbock. I then found his death certificate. He was born 28 June 1889 in IL, son of William C Magers and Sarah Reynolds. He died of acute heart failure 29 Nov 1963 at home, 620 South 7th Street, Slaton, Lubbock, TX. He was in the furniture business in Lubbock as a salesman. He was shown as a widower, buried through the Williams Funeral Home in Slaton and buried at the Englewood Cemetery. Thankfully, that cemetery is on line! His stone reads Charles E Magers 1889 - 1963. Buried beside him is Elmina Magers, 1891 - 1962 (belive 31 Dec). I can't find her death certificate yet, but still looking. Next, I found his WWI draft card. He was living in June of 1917 at RFD 1, Whitenight, TX; birth date agrees, said he was born in Galesburg IL. OK, so that's where Sarah Reynolds Gorin/Goren & her second hubby were living - (Can't find them on the census yet but the 1890 is missing and by 1900 - they were in TX . He is shown as a farmer and says he has a wife and child. He appeared in Grayson, TX. Then, I found a descendant in Lubbock on line and have written her. She stated that Charles E was in fact born at the date shown in Galesburg, Knox Co IL. Knox is adjacent to Warren Co IL where we found the Goren clan. He married on 17 Apr 1906 Elmina Marshall. OK - going to try to find that marriage. Charles E was a Justice of the Peace in Precinct 3 in Grayson Texas at one time, in 1920 he lived in Leonard, Fannin, TX; in 1930 he lived in Precinct 2, Lubbock TX. The child listed in his draft card was Elmer Edward Magers 1907-1979 who married Annie Lillie Watkins (1911-1994). I'm hoping the gal I wrote in Lubbock is of this family. Eventually I'm hoping to meet or email with a living Magers descendant that might have some memory of Ray Harry Gorin or Ollie or J M Magers or the missing bros of Samuel Gideon - William and Joshua. This gives you an idea of how I work doing genealogical researching - one thing leads to another. If it bores you - sorry but thought you might be interested! Sandi Col. 1. [GORIN] SAMUEL GIDEON & RAY HARRY GOREN
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. If you get 2 copies - sorry - this bounced back to me ... S Thanks to the internet, Gary Williams and Bob Winn, I've accumulated some information on this illusive Ray Harry Goren. I have just written to the Foust Funeral Home in Grapevine TX and am hoping they will reply. I found the obituary for Samuel Gideon Goren and am going to print it here - which will confirm that Ray Goren was the son of Samuel Gideon Goren - I just have a spare wife! 4 May 1959 issue of Denton Chronicle News. "Rites Set for Ex-County man. Lake Dallas (Staff) - Funeral services for Samuel Gideon Goren of Euless, a former long-time resident of Argyle, were to be held today at 4 p.m. in the Lake Dallas Baptist Church. The Rev. Eugene Brink of Carrolton was to officiate, assisted by the Rev. Jimmy Naugher, pastor of the Lake Dallas Church. Interment was to be in Old Hall Cemetery near Lewisville. Foust Funeral Home in Grapevine is in charge of arrangements. A native of Warren County, Ky [note born in Barren, family moved to Bowling Green in Warren Co early], Mr. Goren had lived in Argyle for 12 years prior to his move to Euless a year ago. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Christian Church. Survivors include his wife [Winney/Winiford]; one daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Shearer of Euless ; one son, RAY GOREN of Bonham; one sister, Mrs. Ollie Reynolds of Van Alystyne [step-sister?]; two brothers, John Goren of Farmers Branch [John Rogers Goren] and Charlie Magers of Lubbock [step-brother]; one granddaughter and one great grandson." Samuel Gideon is buried at the above named cemetery - 8 June 1876 - 3 May 1959. Buried beside him is his wife, Winnie Vinson Goren, 22 Sept 1899 - 12 Dec 1993. I cannot find her obituary or where they were married. Ray Harry Goren was a veteran of WWI, and died at the Veteran's Hospital in Bonham. That hospital is still open; I don't know if they will release records or not. Ray died 19 Oct 1962 and is buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Grayson. There is no spouse or other Goren's shown buried in this cemetery. I can only find him on one census record with Samuel and a Maggie Goren (she's the spare wife!) with his sister cited above and a brother Ross. I can find nothing on Ross; he either died young or Ross was not his first name. I will let you know if the funeral home writes/e-mails me back, if not - perhaps Gary - you can visit there, they will let you see the information - at least they do in KY! If any of you in TX have access to more records - help is appreciated. I cannot find any marriage records on Samuel Gideon Goren - they lived in KY, IL, KS and TX and, until their move to TX had close connections with "our" Henry Gorin line so they knew they were related tho the name was spelled differently! I'm also still trying to find Samuel Gideon's brothers William and Joshua Gorin/Goren - Gary has a photo of all the brothers and it appears to have been taken when they were in their 20's-30's - but Joshua and William just disappear. That's it for a while - I need to enter all these in my master files on line. Thanks, Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin

    3. I don't know how many of you, if any (!) have any interest in the information I put on this list; I only hear from 2-3 of you and I can't get you to post your queries or finds to the list - about ready to give up - I'm trying to share what I find to help you out; if there's no real interest, I'll quit posting and just let queries come in once in a while. But - as my last try. As I mentioned last night, I found a lot of new death certificates.Rather than give you the information, I'll just list the names and if you have interest, you may write me privately. 1. [GORIN] HENRY FRANKLIN GORIN JR. NEW!
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Henry Franklin Gorin has long been a mystery. He was the son of John Gorin Jr and Eliza Frances Wilson and lived originally in Russellville, Logan, KY. According to Franklin Gorin of Glasgow, he moved to Philadelphia and nothing was known of him. I knew his wife had the initials of M R. I just found his son's death certificate in PA! I've had no children shown for Henry Franklin Gorin Sr. He died 13 Mar 1896, age 41 years, 5 months, 0 days. He was shown as white, a clerk, married (her name not shown) and born in Philadelphia . He lived in Collingswood, PA and had lived there only two years. He was shown as the son of Henry F Gorin and Martha R Gorin. The sad part is that he committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid. . His burial location is shown as Woodland Cemetery - no town is shown - I'll have to see if there is a Woodland Cemetery in Collngswood .. don't know much about PA. A new source just opened up to me and I might be up awhile! Sandi

    3. Source: The Green County Record, Greensburg, KY, Thursday, Aug 29, 1912, p. 5., column 3. "DIED. GORIN - At his home in Rowletts last Wednesday morning James Gorin, aged 59. The above was telephoned to his brother S. T. Gorin at this place but no further news except that the funeral would be held Thursday. Ex-Senator Gorin of this place was not aware that his brother was sick and the news of his sudden demise was a shock. He was well known here and attended the funeral of his brother, Capt. W. F. Gorin, at this place but a short time ago." Source: Same paper, Thursday, Sept 12,1912, p. 4., column 2. OBITUARY. Mrs. Ruth Gorin Despain, daughter of Capt. W. H. and Mrs. Mary E. Gorin, was born Nov. 7, 1870, married to Dr. J. E. Despain 1903, and died Aug. 20, 1912. To many of us this year has been a year of sadness by reason of the death of our friends. One by one our friends and loved ones are passing away. When Mrs. Ruth Gorin Despain died at her home near Hodgenville, Ky., on the night of August 29, 1912, and I learned of her death it brought sadness to my heart for we had long been friends. In the days long gone by we had been schoolmates, and many, many happy hours have we spent together on the schoolyard at old Campground. But now she has gone to worship at the throne of the Great Teacher who careth for all who obey His precepts. Her life was a life of noble and beautiful deeds and all who knew her were friends. Her sickness was long and severe, but she bore her burden with the fortitude of a christian and asked her husband not to grieve for her. She designed the spot where she desired to be buried, by the side of her niece, Lyda Gorin, saying that she would go and keep company with Lyda. We should not question the wisdom and ways of God; but when the consecrated christian, in the prime of life, with her voice and influence ever on the side of right, is taken by the angel of death we cannot understand God's purpose. We can but submit to His will, knowing that He doeth all things well, and say with the Apostle Paul, "O, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out." Mrs. Despain's friends in Green County appreciate the many acts of kindness shown to her during her sickness, by her new neighbors and friends, in and around Hodgenville. She was an active member of the Ladies Lincoln League; and the members of that organization all clothed in garments of white, typical of the pure white spotless character of the deceased attended her burial. The same, Ruth Gorin, stood for a high ideals in practical every-day christian life. I often wonder just what kind of a place heaven is; and whether or not the redeemed in glory really think of their friends on earth; and whether or not their spirits as guardian angels sometimes hover over us and influence our lives. We cannot see; we cannot know. In contemplation my heart feels the loss of my friend; and I hear, as it were, her voice calling: The voice of Heaven calls Above the mad world's quest, O, heed the gentle call - Tired heart, come home and rest. L.D.W." Lyda cited was Lyda Bell Gorin, d/o Henry Franklin Gorin and Emma Dearen. Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin

Greensburg, Ky., May 31st, 1912. On the 25th day of May 1912, death invaded our midst and called from our Lodge to the Celestial Lodge above, our beloved brother, W. F. Gorin, aged 74. He was a loyal Mason, a kind and loving husband and father, a true friend and an honored, upright citizen, whose wise counsel will be missed. He was our friend and brother, ever ready to answer any summons or perform any service for the good of the craft. To the bereaved family and friends, we tender our heartfelt sympathy; and may He who never forsakes those that put their trust in Him, ever have them in His holy keeping. 2. Sandi Gorin
    3. It's been a long time since I've posted anything to this list; as you are aware, my daughter Kris is going through some rough times with kidney failure - my mind has been elsewhere. But, a local friend who is very distantly related to the Gorin clan was in Greensburg KY last week and while there, photocopied some obituaries for me. I am going to post all three, likely in two or more emails. Source: The Green County Record, Greensburg, KY, Thursday, May 30, 1912 page 4, column 2. "DIED. Capt. William F. Gorin died at the home of his son-in-law, D. P. Turner near Greesnsburg, Ky., May 25, 1912. Capt. Gorin, was one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens. He was a model gentleman who was loved by everyone who knew him. He was honorable, honest, and true as a friend, was kind and agreeable with everybody. The writer does not remember to ever have heard any one speak of him except in the highest terms, and never heard him speak ill of any one. He was a kind, affectionate and loving husband and father, and enjoyed to a high degree the association of his children and grand-children, all of whom were kind and loving to him. He was born, November 1837 and was married to Miss Elizabeth Jamerson [sic Jameson] Sept. 10, 1860, who survives him. To this union were born five girls and two boys all of whom survive him and all are married, he is also survived by several grand-children and three brothers, S. T. Gorin of this place; J. H. of Rowletts, Ky.; G. W., of Leitchfield [sic Litchfield], Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. M. B. Perry, of Webbs, Ky., Mrs. Ella O. Noe, of Port Arthur, Tex., Mrs Sallie J. Inmen [sic Inman], of Port Arthur, Tex. Capt. Gorin enlisted in the Federal army in the fall of 1861, and served through the war and was mustered out after the fall of Richmond and the close of the war. He enterd the army as a 2d Lieutenant in the 2d Kentucky Cavalry, and was mustered out as a Captain in the 26th Kentucky Infantry. He was a true G. A. R. man and great friend to an old soldier. Capt. Gorin was elected to the Kentucky Legislature in 1881 and served one term, and was an intelligent and useful member. He was buried in the Cemetery at Greensburg, Ky., by the Masonic Fraternity, and his remains were followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of relatives and friends of whom he had many. Peace to his soul. A. Friend." Sandi Col. Sandi Gorin - GORIN worldconnect website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sgorin

    1. [GORIN] UPDATE
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I wasn't expecting to post an update today but ... the specialist is dismissing Kris from the hospital today. I am not totally happy, but that's they way they do it these days. She sounded good this morning but of course, after surgery is in pain and weak. She's still only on a liquid diet. The doctor said normally they send them home several hours after surgery; times have changed. It's an hour drive for them; getting papers ready and medications, etc. They have to return to the kidney specialist's office twice next week for 2 more dialysis treatments and training - tho the surgeon yesterday said she'd need 6 more appts. Kris is happy to go home but isn't sure herself she is ready. Bill will have lots of help locally from the church people anyway. I will be going over tomorrow morning sometime to give him a break and will likely spend the day. Totally surprised; they'd said Monday or so..... thankful but with a little concern. Sandi

    1. [GORIN] UPDATE AFTER SURGERY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Here I go cluttering the list but. Just returned home from Elizabethtown, trying to get out after one storm and trying to beat the next system coming in. I rode to the hospital with my pastor and wife; came home with my dau Shelley and her husband. Kris made it through surgery splendidly. I just missed seeing her when we got there; she had planned ahead and left a note on her bed as to where to go. I did talk to her on her cell phone about 30 seconds before they wheeled her out. The surgery lasted about an hour, I think - they alert you when they actually go into surgery and it seems like we had been waiting about 30-45. The surgeon talked to us for quite a while she was in recovery; everything implanted, everything removed that was necessary. We went back into the waiting room where they were going to page us in about 30 minutes. I decided to head on back to their room and the others waited. About half way there (long walk) my cell phone rang ... "hey Mom, where's everyone? I'm back in my room?" And, she text messaged her sister! Kris stayed awake for about 1/2 hour and they brought her her lunch - shouldn't have had that kind, should have been liquid diet. She was starved and ate most of it and then lost all of it. She had more lasix, a nausea injection and then pain pills. She needed to sleep and kept dozing off, so we sneaked out and grabbed a bite to eat. She was still sleeping when all of us but Bill left. I don't know about discharge dates yet but hope they keep her for awhile longer. She has to have regular dialysis 3 times a week for 2 weeks in her home town while they are sure the implanted gizmo is working - no infections, etc. I'll talk to her later this evening. Blood pressure was pretty high but expected, it will start coming down with the meds. The storms appear to be close so I am dashing over to the grocery store rapidly. Just wanted to let you know that major step #2 is done. Keep remembering her during her healing time at the hospital. We're going to try to set up a web site where people can check in on her daily progress - after we get some sleep and relax. Sandi

    1. [GORIN] UPDATE
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. A short note. I'm on my way to the hospital in an hour; Kris is having surgery this morning at 9:30 central. It was found yesterday that she also had to have her gall bladder removed as well as the surgery to install a port {not the official name) for dialysis in her stomach. She was doing fine emotionally until last night when she broke down - everyone had gone and it hit her. I talked with her until the late hours last night to calm her fears and tears. Please remember her especially during this surgery this morning and during the recovery period - then as she begins learning how to use all the equipment, etc. I will try to post a short note when I return. Sandi
