In Pitt County in a small town called Falkland was the location of the Gorham Plantation in the time of slavery. The largest plantation in that part of the county was the Pitt Plantation. They traded with everyone in the area. A part of your history may be public records in Pitt County. At one time we had a recorded history written in a old bible, but I have not seen it in over 20 years and am not sure that it is still in the family. In it was a long history of the Gorham family going back to the times of slavery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: stevec069 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gorham/449/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great x4 grandfather was John Gorham. He died in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1832. This family was one of the original settlers of Ann Arbor. John and his wife Abigail had a total of 9 children. The eldest 2 children were born in Vermont, the following 3 were born in New York, and the remaining were born in Michigan. I'm wondering if my John may have been the son of George Gorham (1744 - 1838) of New Haven County CT, who married Sarah Stephens in 1767? Just a couple of pieces of evidence; Abigail Gorham was born in Connecticut. and my John was in his 40's in 1830. Most genealogical records have George's John born around 1775. Does anyone know of any resources which accurately trace the life of George's mysterious son John? Thanks much for your help. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: stevec069 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gorham/448/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've been trying to figure out this connection for the longest time now. My Great x4 Grandfather was John Gorham who died in 1832 in Washtenaw County Michigan. I think based on all the data I can research, he is the brother of Jared and James Gorham of Rutland County, Vermont. Two of John's children were born in Vermont circa 1806 - 1809. The 1790 and 1810 Census has a John Gorham living in the area. I think the reason he's not in the 1820 Census in Vermont is because he's in New York. John's remaining 5 children were born in New York. Then in the Michigan Territorial Census of 1827, he shows up in Washtenaw County. Does anyone have any info on John Gorham of Rutland County, who may have researched him going somewhere else? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a John Gorham born in 1850 born in (we think) Dill Hills, Galway County, Ireland. I found his record by going over to the Church of Jeus Christ Web site. They let you look for Free. By the way I have a Micheal in my Gorham family. I do not have his birth date. But it would have to be about 1860 to 1870.
