I am looking for any information or clues regarding my father's birth family. My father was born Baby Boy Gorham on May 29, 1927 at Chicago Lying in Hospital in Chicago, IL. I have a copy of his adoption decree which says his birth mother's name is Jean M. Gorham. Although I have been very successful on my other genealogy projects, after five years I have yet to find a single clue regarding the elusive Jean. Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated! You may email me at mwiley@alaska.net. Thank you for your assistance, Michele Wiley
I am seeking information about Desire GORHAM b.c. 1644, d.c. 1700, m. John HAWES b. 1635, the son of Edmond HAWES of Yarmouth. Desire and John had a son Benjamin b. March 20, 1681/2 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachussets. Any help with Desire's family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. Lynda
Hi all, I just found this in my waiting to be sent list. I wrote it in December. I'm so organized. :) I've been looking things up as usual and thought I would share some census information. This is just a short list for those that have a Sanford in their line. A rare name in this family, to be sure, but here it is. 1801 Goram, Sanford GA 1810 Goram, Sanford KY 1830 Gorham, Santford GA 1840 Goram, Sanford GA 1840 Gorum, Sanford AL 1850 Gorum, Sanform AL 1850 Gorham, Sandford TN 1860 Gorham, Sanford LA 1870 Gorham, Sanford LA I may have missed a few Sanford's but I'll find them. I'm trying to get all the Gorham's, Goram's, Gorum's, Goreham's and Ghorum's. And more, if I have the time. Then separate them by spellings and by state. Feel free to send me any more unusual spellings. I had a list of over 20 but have misplaced it at the moment. Y'all take care. Paula Gorham Fealko
Hi Everyone, If you subscribe to the KYBourbo-L, then you've already seen this. This gentleman has put a great deal of time and effort into this site and it shows. I highly recommend you check it out. Bourbon County, Kentucky, Databases http://www.shawhan.com/Bourbon_County.html Paula Gorham Fealko PS: I'm still putting together the "Hannah File". :) Will have it ready soon.
Hi all, Apparently, I jinxed myself by announcing I would visit the graveyard before I actually did it. I had 3 of my kids home from school on Tuesday, one with a stomach flu, and the two youngest ones with chicken pox. I've rescheduled the visit until next Tuesday. In the meantime, I found the following info about A. D. Tuttle. I was right about which of Hannah's daughter's it was. While I disagree about some dates mentioned, I am trying to find some information from Lunenburg, VA about Hannah's parents since I've had no luck with Loudon Co. By the way, on the Winn Parish, LA web site, they have a lot of cemeteries listed on line with who's buried there. Are there any web sites online where I can find a list like this on some of the more common Gorham Burial places? ie: Elk Lick Cemetery? Or maybe someone has a copy they can share? Thanks. (Gorham) Binley, a widow; born 6-Oct-1808; died 15-May-1880 in Napa County, CA; daughter of Mrs. Hannah Gorham born 19-Sep-1776 in Lunenburg County, VA, who died c1877 at the age of 102. Hi Everyone, Hope the holidays were good to one and all. I have a late Christmas present for some of you. I found Hannah. Hannah C. Cavendish is resting peacefully at the Tulocay Cemetery in Napa, CA. The Director of the Cemetery said that he found her listed in their records, but no plot was listed. But, there are other Gorham's buried there. The kind lady who is helping me with the search has family buried there from the early 1870's, so she is familiar with the cemetery. It's the oldest one in Napa and well known. We'll be meeting there on Tuesday to see if we can locate Hannah's plot an take pictures of it and the other Gorham's. If she doesn't have a marker, we'll make sure she gets one. I have the following newspaper articles. Will get the name and the dates of the newspaper as soon as possible. "Death of an Aged Lady.--Mrs. Gorham, mother of Mrs. A. D. Tuttle, and grandmother of Mrs. ?. E. Corcoran, a lady aged something over 99 years, died yesterday at the residence of Mr. Tuttle, on Calistoga Avenue. She was a bright active old lady, and had usually enjoyed good health." "Mrs. A. D. Tuttle, died at Foss Valley, last Thursday night of enlargement of the liver. Deceased was seventy-one years of age. She was the grandmother of Mary and Clem? Lee. Her mother, Mrs. Gorham, who died three or four years ago, lived to the advanced age of 102 years." On the same page with Mrs. Tuttle's article: "On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors appointed Edwin Gorham janitor of the Court House, Shepherd Schwen having resigned that position." >From the "Great Register of Napa County": #3751 Book No. 1886 Page No. 38 Name: Tuttle, Ambrose Dudley Age: 69 Nativity: Kent Date of Registration: 7 Sept 1880 Occupation: Farmer Place of Residence: Napa Copied from: Napa County Deaths Book 1 1873-1903 Page 99 & 100 No. 314 Full Name of Deceased: Hannah C. Gorham Date and Time of Death: 11-5-1875 Place of Death: Napa City Sex: Female Marital Status: Married (??????) Age at Death: 99 years 1 mo 17 days Birthplace: Virginia Cause of Death: Old Age Color or Race: W Note: I found Ambrose Tuttle in the 1850 Census in MO, and in the 1870 Census in Nevada Co., CA. Apparently, one of Hannah's daughter's had a second marriage to Ambrose Dudley Tuttle, and judging from the dates, I'm assuming it to be Susannah. Hannah died in 1875. Mrs. Tuttle died 3 or 4 years later at age 71. That put's the birthdate of the daughter at about 1808, which is the year I have listed for Susannah. But then again, they said her mother died at age 102. So I'll have to wait until I see all the paperwork. I'll try and get everything put together and ready to e-mail by the end of the week. Take care. Paula Gorham Fealko
Wouldn't you like to see something that hasn't been seen since our ancestors were rebuilding their lives after the civil war? Someone helping me research a different line sent this to me. This year will be the first full moon to occur on the winter solstice, Dec. 22, commonly called the first day of winter. Since a full moon on the winter solstice occurred in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth) The moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth) since the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger making it brighter. Also, this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year since the moon's orbit is constantly deforming. If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous. In laymen's terms it will be a super bright full moon, much more than the usual AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years! Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this. Our descendants 100 or so years from now will see this again. I find this interesting! Remember this will happen Wednesday, December 22, 1999.....[mark your calendar]. The coincidence of both the sun and moon being at their perigee's at the same time is extremely rare.
Hi Everyone, Just wanted to see if you were all still out there. I have another Gorham for you. Who was the James T. Gorham, from Robertson Co., age listed as 18, that was in the Tennessee State Pen. for burglary at some time between 1831 and 1850? Inmates of Tennessee State Penitentiary [A-K] Happy Holidays to All Paula Gorham Fealko
Hi all :) Just wanted to share a page I came across that I thought was interesting. A "Sandford Gorham" (their spelling) is mentioned in the article just once. I think the Sanford they are referring to is Thomas Gorham and Margaret Cotton's son. Just a little tidbit to add to your notes. Hi everyone. :) I've been in contact with a distant cousin in Louisiana and she just sent me the following information. I'm including my letter to her and her response and my letter back to her. Can anyone help me with this? This, combined with other information from others, definitely proves that my Sanford is not the son of Sanford and Hannah Gorham, since he died in 1816 and this census puts my Sanford as being born abt 1819. ARE WE HAVING FUN YET??????? :) Thanks to all of you for putting up with me. Paula Gorham Fealko (A quick observation, the census puts Mahulda as being born about 1819, but her headstone reads 1815. Was there some kind of time delay in relaying the information back then? Or are they pretty accurate?)
I am searching for the family of my greatgrandmother,Mary Gorham. I am looking for information on the Gorham family in Northern Oklahoma. From what I understand, there is a Gorham family cemetary in Nowata, OK. Anyone with any knowledge of this cemetary or the relating family, please contact me. All information would be greatly appreciated! Candy Tripp
Hi all :) I came across this little tidbit and was wondering if any of you might have any more information on him. "GORHAM, William, d. in the parish of Iberville, LA, Jan., 1845; was a native of Barnstable, Mass., and had resided in Louisiana for more than 30 years." Thanks, Paula Gorham Fealko
To all on this list: We would like to jump in here guys before we all get off on the wrong foot. The following information came from a published newspaper, "The Kentucky-Citizen, Paris, Ky." and had a date line of Tuesday, September 11, 1945. We realize that this was 54 years ago, and mistakes were made; however, basic facts do not change. Title of the Article was "EARLY BOURBON FAMILIES". (Sponsored by Jemima Johnson Chapter, D.A.R.) Committee- Miss Blanche Lilleston, Mrs. Thomas Henry Clay, Mrs. William Ardery, Mrs. Thomas C. Prewitt, Mrs. Charles Martin) (The work of this committe in compiling and publishing this series of Bourbon County family sketches is done in honor of Mrs. Frederick A. Wallis, Historian General of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (1941-1944), former State Regent and Regent of Jemima Johnson Chapter.) GORHAM FAMILY From Files of Mrs. W. B. Ardery THOMAS GORHAM, probably born in Delaware or one of the New England states, came to Kentucky at an early date from Loudoun County, Virginia, where he had lived at least during a part of the Revolutionary period. His name appears among the Revolutionary Public Claims for Loudoun which are filed at the Virginia State library showing patriots' service record established. According to family tradition his wife was, before marriage, Margaret Cotton, and deeds filed in Bourbon County, Ky., show that her given name was Margaret. (MCS- Margaret is named in the will of her father William Cotton, which is filed in Loudoun County Virginia in 1788) The names of Thomas Gorham and his son, Sanford Gorham, appear as signers of early petitions to the Virginia Assembly sent by Kentucky pioneers (see Petitions as published by the Filson Club). After coming to Kentucky, Thomas Gorham Sr., lived for a time in Bourbon county, where he deeded portions of a tract he had purchased of James Parberry September 1787. This deed is mentioned in a suit filed in Bourbon County and in it Thomas Gorham is mentioned as "of Fayette County," and it was witnessed by Thomas Gorham Jr. (showing his son, Thomas, was at least 21 years of age), and also witnessed by John Gorham. In this same suit (box 403, Thompkins Barlow vs. Geo. Hairston and hrs. of Jas. Parberry dated 1808 but not settled until after the death of Thomas Gorham in the year 1814) we find the heirs were as follows: SANFORD GORHAM, THOMAS GORHAM, ALEXANDER GORHAM, JOHN GORHAM, FRANKY GORHAM, who married George Burnoe, (see here-after). PEGGY GORHAM, who married Thomas Redmon, WILLIAM GORHAM, ANN GORHAM, who married John Beck, BETSY GORHAM, who married Thomas Riggs, NANCY GORHAM, who married Abner Clarke, SUSANNAH GORHAM, who married John boyd and JOSHUA GORHAM. Before the final settlement of this suit in 1817, it is shown by an amended bill that Sanford Gorham had died leaving children and heirs and that George Burnoe had died leaving heirs. In another suit filed in Bourbon County Circuit Court (box 696-Gorham vs. Gorham Hrs., filed Dec. 1, 1826, and settled 1827) we find the children of Sanford Gorham as follows: JOHN GORHAM, GEORGE GORHAM, SANFORD GORHAM, HARVEY T. GORHAM, WILLIAM GORHAM, AARON GORHAM, THOMAS RICHARD GORHAM, THORNTON GORHAM, BETSEY GORHAM, who had married Charles C. Russell, SUSAN GORHAM, who had married Sylvester Bailey, and of these Aaron, Thomas and Thornton were "under 21 years of age" by Thomas Elliot, their guardian. Hi All :) I searched the Thomas Gorham, Sr. and Margaret Cotton line for my Sanford Gorham and found he wasn't a part of it. But I've found alot that should be of interest to those of you that are from that family. First, I came across a new search engine that is great. It's called Google.com. Using this search engine, I've found the following articles that might be of use or just entertaining. Check it out. John Gorham This site is a list of letters to a local newspaper in Nova Scotia debating the naming of a new road after Capt. John Gorham of the Gorham Rangers. It has a lot of detail and names and dates in it. Gorum Genealogy A Little Gorum History This page has alot of information found on the Gorham's using about a dozen different spellings. Here's a short quote from the page: "Just to show you what I mean, here are the all the different ways that I have encountered of to spell my last name: Gorham, Goram, Gorum, Goreham, Gorem, Gorim, Gorom, Gorram, Gorrem, Gorrim, Gorrom, Gorrum, Ghoram, Gorrham, Ghorom." This page has a lot of information on Sanford Gorham. In the mean time, I'm still looking for information on Sanford Gorham (b:1812 in KY) and Mahulda Freeman (b:1815 in TN). Married abt 1837. I have their descendants, I'm looking for thier ancestors. Thanks. Paula Gorham Fealko
Hi everyone, For those of you connected to Thomas Gorham and Margaret Cotton, I found this bite of information on a Henry and John Cotton at KYBio project. I don't know how the two men fit in, but sure they are part of William and Mary Taylor group. "Taken from old clippings dealing with Kentucky family history, newspaper unknown. These clippings are about 100 years old (1997). Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Volume 10, Number 1 - May 1995. pp. 94-95. Nelson County. Capt. Owen Winn, Capt. Thomas Winn and Edward Winn came over with the London Company in 1620, from Wales, the family there belonging to the nobility. The parish register of Middlesex County has these entries: Richard Winn, son of Richard and Sarah Winn, was baptized September 28, 1701; John, som of same, November 25, 1701; Thomas, son of Richard and Anne Winn, born March 5, 1716; Thomas Winn died October 10, 1716; Thomas Winn died October 10, 1716. Owen Winn died April 17, 1722; William Winn, Sr., died October 27, 1710. Richard and Sarah had Mary, born December 14, 1696, and Sarah, born January 17, 1798. March 1784, George Winn on Treasury warrant settled on 1,000 acres in Fayette County, Ky. Will probated in 1802, witnessed by Henry Cotton, John Winn and Hendley. Owen Winn, August 16, 500 acres on Stoners Fork. Minor Winn, September 1, 1786, 2,600 acres on Licking; son David, grandson John D. Winn. James Winn, 112 acres in Nelson County April 1, 1786. George and Lettice Winn had ten children. His sons were Thomas, Geoge, William and Adam. His daughters were the wives of Henry Cotton, John Hancock, Icholida Musick, Edward Brandley, William Herndon, John Hendley and Samuel Clay, of Bourbon County. William Herndon married Katherine Winn. He and his wife both died in 1850. They had five children, John Patrick, Henry George, Elijah, Elizabeth and Sallie. William Herndon came to Kentucky in 1800 from Charlotte County, Va. Capt. William Herndon of Lancaster, Ky., is his grandson and may know the Winn story. Isholida Musick, born in 1763, married Sally Winn. His daughter Nancy married Capt. James Duncan, soldier in 1812, who died in Elm Grove, Clay County, Mo., leaving a large family. Adam Winn was drowned in Kentucky River at the mouth of Elk Creek, May 21, 1826. John Hendley married Jemima Winn. Owen and Mary Cotton Winn had: Sarah Winn, married Boggs; Susannah, married --- Spurr; ELizabeth married William Vallandingham; Polly married --- King; Jane married Charles Grimes; Anna married John Gess; Lydia married William C. Spurr; Dora Winn married Aaron H. Young; Barbara Winn married Robert Bush; John Winn married Susanna Dulin; Nathaniel Winn. Mary Cotton Winn was the daughter of John Cotton of Nelson County. What kin was this John Cotton to Henry Cotton who married the daughter of George and Lettice or Letitia Winn? What was Letitia Winn's maiden name? I find beside those above the following marriage records in the Fayette County Court: Lucy C. Winn and Joseph Gatewood; Willis Winn and Elizabeth Winn; James Winn and Mary D. ---; Jacob Winn and C. A. Sherman; Owen and Beorge B. Harrison; Lydia Ann Winn and James Clarke; Jesse D. Winn and Lucy Buckner; Rebecca Winn and George Clay. Where do these Winns belong? Owen Winn's will was probated September 8, 1805. William Davenport, Thomas Clarke and Charles Grimes witnesses. The above is from authentic records." Hello, I'm new to this list, am seeking family of Mary Elizabeth Gorham, born 1830 in Fairfax County, VA(?), married Howerton Opie Lindsay 1851, Washington, DC, moved to Burnt Mills (near Silver Spring) Maryland abt. 1861. Howerton went by the name of O.P. & there were 11 children: George Henry, Mary Frances, Anna Elizabeth, John Robert, William Thomas, Martha Susan, Josiah S. (my ggreat-grandfather) Catherine Mae, Caroline Virginia, Charles Franklin and Sarah Jane. Mary Elizabeth died February 04,1 894 in Burnt Mills, MD, buried I believe @Colesville Methodist Church Cemetery in Colesville, MD, as was Opie, no record of these burials have been found. Opie's parents Hierome (Hiram) and Frances Harden Lindsay also of Fairfax County, Virginia. Would like to find her parents/siblings and where they were from. Any help would be appreciated in linking this family. Thanks, Kitty Leupen
