My ancestor Ruth Gorham (spelt Gorum on her death certificate) was born in 1817 in Kent, England. Does anyone have any reference to this person. She married (1) James Dawes and (2) John Eade and had about twelve children. Four of whom came to Australia in 1864, including herself, where she died in 1880 in NSW. regards Alan Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - Oi, Oi, Oi (If only silver were gold)

Hi all, My ancestry is traced back through Gorhams living in England - I've just subscribed to this list and looking back through the archives it appears that most of the families listed are American. Can anyone give me an idea of a starting point for my English family tree?? My grandmother is Lois Dippy (nee Gorham) and came from a large family including a Garth and a John. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Samantha email: sjd@marion.sa.gov.au
Hi, During my summer vacation down the Cape, I snuck away for a few hours to go to the Yarmouth Ancient Cemetery. While I was there I jotted down headstone information on ELDRIDGE and GORHAM. I have over 50 names. I have put them on my web site. I'd love to hear about any connections you may have - two are mine and I am tryning to determine if there is any relationship between them and the others. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/i/x/Robert-J-Dixon/FILE/0009page.html Regards, Marybeth Woburn, MA
Hi Denise, I also have a Gorham line. My gg grandfather Philo Goreham, (b 1805) appeared at Ferrisburg, VT at about 1810. He married Mariah Bard, d/o William Bard and Deborah Cronkhite, May 16 in Addison Co, VT. They were in Vermont area when it was NY and then I found them again in Stockholm St. Lawrence Co, NY in 1840 census where the family is listed and living with a Carter Goreham, a half brother. I heard that Carter's real last name was Gregory and although I have found him in an early VT census, can not locate him after the 1840 NY federal census. I read that he had moved to Illinois or Indiana, but have checked all indexes from those states and have not come up with a Carter Gregory. Philo and Mariah (9 members) moved to South Gower, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada (page 1 of the 1848 CA census) in about 1845 . Have just spent a week searching in the FHC in SLC and I noted no other Gorhams who seemed to be related. Their son, Warren Bard Gorham moved to Lost Nation, Clinton County, Iowa in 1855 with a large group of Canadians. One by one all of the Gorhams but one returned to the states. Are we related? My lines are: ANDREWS, ARMSTRONG, BARD, BENNETT, BLACKSTONE, BOWLING, BULL, CLARK, COLEY, CRONKITE, DISBOROUGH, DISBROW, GARNSEY, GOREHAM, GUERNSEY, JONES, KENNY, KITCHELL, KNAPP, MUNNINGS, PECK, POWERS, PRUDDEN, RICHARDS, WADE, WOLREY. roselv@lv.rmci.net
I am researching the ancestry of Thomas William Gorham b. 1837 Ireland. I have hit a brick wall so to speak. I need assistance with his parents (presumably John M. Gorham b. 1814 & Mary Connors b. 1794 both in Ireland). Any siblings that you have seen? Thanks.

ANN ELIZA CLINGMAN was born near Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio Feb 13, 1811. She married William McDowell, Jr. at Portsmouth, Ohio Jan 5, 1830. They had 10 children, six boys and 4 girls - 4 boys and 2 girls died young) and she died at Rockford, Winnebago Co., ILL. Feb. 27, 1892 Her early life was passed in poverty and privation incident to a sparsely settled country and pioneer life intensified by the intemperance of her father; later he reformed and she obtained a fair common school education, and being self reliant, firm & industrious she had accumulated more than an average amount of articles for clothing and housekeeping at date of her marriage for one in her station of life. In needlework, spinning, weaving, coloring, etc., she had few equals, being remarkable not only for the fineness and accuracy but also for the speed of her work. As examples of her patient industry she spun, colored, and wove two hemp bed ticks, also several woolen figured counterpanes and many yards of linsey for dresses before her marriage. In the winter of 1833 & 4 she moulded over 1600 lbs. of candles besides dipping many hundred lbs. etc., and doing her housework. Later she would spin 16 cuts of woolen yarn per day and attend to milking & housework. (A cut of yarn consists of 120 threads 3 yds. long, or 1080 feet per cut -17280 feet per day) In knitting or darning she was expert and neat. A sample of her darning at the advanced age of 80 years., could hardly be excelled by younger persons. She read a good deal but wrote little. Being of a serious and religious cast of mind she united with the M. E. Church before her marriage. A division in the church caused her husband to withdraw from the M. E. C. and unite with the Protestant Methodists and she also went with him. Later reading Swedenborgs books they embraced his views and withdrew from the protestants. The opposition by their acquaintances and others was such that it was in reality a religious persecution that continued until they moved to Wisc. in 1842. While she bore this with fortitude and unswerving faith in the new doctrines, she felt their criticisms keenly. Not long, perhaps a year or so, after her marriage being in poor health the first symptoms of insanity appeared in the form of mental religious excitement, but it soon passed away, mild symptoms would be manifest at intervals until about the year 1843 or 4 she became worse than usual and at each recurring paroxysm she grew worse and the intervals shorter until her mind became so unsettled that in her most lucid moments her words were interspersed with insane vagaries. Time modified these conditions to some extent so that the later years of her life were much more quiet than those of the earlier years of her insanity. Her habits of industry and care for her family continued nearly to the date of her death. PARENTS & FAMILY OF ANN ELIZA CLINGMAN, WIFE OF WILLIAM MCDOWELL (1805-1895) GEORGE W. The following information found in ledger book dated "circa 1892" of W. C. McDowell of Shelbyville, Shelby Co., MO. This ledger book given to the Shelby Co. Historical Society and loaned (1988) to MO. State Archives for microfilming. page 166 (This is Washington C. McDowell, son of William & Ann Eliza Clingman McDowell) WILLIAM MCDOWELL (the grandfather of Washington C.) was born in the county of Cavan, Ireland on Feb. 4, 1762 and came to Charleston, S. C. in 1782, married to RACHEL MCCLINTICK at Carlisle, Penn. on June 29th 1795. They had 7 children, one named Wm. died Feb. 20th, 1803 at Newtown, Frederic county, VA. and his wife died at Portsmouth, Ohio Aug 13th, 1831, and he died at Chillocothe, Ohio Nov. 11th, 1841. Having no means, a brother assisted him and he soon made considerable money while at Charleston, S. C. mostly in the tobacco trade. I think he was studying medicine and preaching while in Penn. He was successful in business while at Savannah, GA. and bought several slaves in 1795/97 and moved to Newton, VA probably early in 1798 and about 1806 moved to Chillocothe, Ohio for the purpose of freeing 8 slaves that he owned, he being a minister in the M. E. Church. About 1832 he fell from a step-ladder while picking cherries which rendered him a cripple causing him to retire from business, the practice of medicine, and the ministry. Under the firm name of McDowell & Sons, he kept a store in Chillocothe, Ohio from 1816 to 1818 and was in partnership with HINDS in ownership of the land and proprietor of the city of Mt. Carmel, Ills. and other enterprises. William McDowell, Jr., the 2nd son, of the same name and son of the above parties was born at Newtown, Frederic County, VA. March 27th, 1805. Married ANN ELIZA CLINGMAN at Portsmouth, Scioto Co., Ohio on Jan. 5th, 1830. Had 10 children of whom 6 died young (one was stillborn) and his wife died at Rockford, Ills. on Feb. 27th 1892 and he died at his old home in Clarno Twp., Green Co., Wisc. on April 17th 1895. His schooling was as good as the subscription primary & academy afforded at the time at Chillocothe, Ohio, i.e. 1810 to 1830, but he thought it was a mistake in having to study Greek & Latin before he had obtained a better knowledge of the English branch. Being a great reader he was considered by his neighbors as having an education above the average. For sometime previous to and at the time he was married, he clerked in his brother John's store at Portsmouth, Ohio. Moved to a farm on Deer Creek, Ross Co., Ohio but having no knowledge of farming the main results were much unremunerative and hard labor. In 1833 he moved to Chillocothy, Ohio and went into the soap and candle making business, but being dependent on his father for means he was compelled to sell out and move to a house on Water Street. Here he ran a grocery for a short time, but his father so interfered that customers dropped off and the business did not pay. His mother, Rachel died Oct. 9th, 1834 at Chillocothe, Ohio. In 1836 he took a trip to northern Illinois and his father-in-law offered him assistance if he would move there. But his father, who was living with him, being old & a cripple and unwilling to move, he decided to remain and take care of him while he lived. From date of closing out the grocery till he moved west in 1842 he had no steady business and during this interval an old black woman came and claimed support by reason that the laws of Ohio required that any person bringing a slave into the State and freeing them must give bonds obligating such person to provide for the support of such slave if they became unable to support themselves. This woman having been a slave and freed by his father and he being unable to support her, the son was compelled to do it. Luckily she was the only one of the 8 that were freed that called for help. The old woman died in a few months, aged 84 years. His father died in 1841 and in the latter part of april, 1842, he started with his family for Illinois in a two-horse wagon. A balky horse compelled him to stop and trade him off for another the first day. He continued his journey westward until he reached Richmond, Indiana, but the roads being very bad he went to Cincinnati, Ohio and took a steamer down the Ohio River then up the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers to Peru, thence by wagon to Cedarville, Stephenson co., IL. While on the way from Richmond, Ind. to Cincinnati, Ohio, several of the children had the measles which caused a delay of several days at Cincinnati. The youngest child, 9 month old William, grew worse on the journey and died at North Grove, Ogle County, Illinois, June 15, 1842 and the corpse was taken to Cedarville and buried. About the last of June, 1842 he moved to a farm in Green Co., Wisc. and having built a frame house, moved into it on the 7th day of Nov. 1842. Taking much interest in education, he was active in securing a good schoolhouse, books & teachers, as the place and time afforded and served many years as an official on the school board. In Aug. 1846 8 year 10 month old John and in Sept. William, 2nd son of the name, died and some months after, his wife showed symptoms of insanity which continued to recur at intervals with increased violence until she was finally placed in the asylum where she remained until about Jan. 1884. May 22nd 1852 Wilhemina died and subsequently a child was stillborn. In 1846 (Oct. to Dec.) a convention having drafter a constitution that was rejected by the people in 1847. He was elected member of the 2nd convention as member from Green County, Wisc. in 1847 which met and dr

Ardery THOMAS GORHAM, probably born in Delaware or one of the New England states, came to Kentucky at an early date from Loudoun County, Virginia, where he had lived at least during a part of the Revolutionary period. His name appears among the Revolutionary Public Claims for Loudoun which are filed at the Virginia State library showing patriots' service record established. According to family tradition his wife was, before marriage, Margaret Cotton, and deeds filed in Bourbon County, Ky., show that her given name was Margaret. (MCS- Margaret is named in the will of her father William Cotton, which is filed in Loudoun County Virginia in 1788) The names of Thomas Gorham and his son, Sanford Gorham, appear as signers of early petitions to the Virginia Assembly sent by Kentucky pioneers (see Petitions as published by the Filson Club). After coming to Kentucky, Thomas Gorham Sr., lived for a time in Bourbon county, where he deeded portions of a tract he had purchased of James Parberry September 1787. This deed is mentioned in a suit filed in Bourbon County and in it Thomas Gorham is mentioned as "of Fayette County," and it was witnessed by Thomas Gorham Jr. (showing his son, Thomas, was at least 21 years of age), and also witnessed by John Gorham. In this same suit (box 403, Thompkins Barlow vs. Geo. Hairston and hrs. of Jas. Parberry dated 1808 but not settled until after the death of Thomas Gorham in the year 1814) we find the heirs were as follows: SANFORD GORHAM, THOMAS GORHAM, ALEXANDER GORHAM, JOHN GORHAM, FRANKY GORHAM, who married George Burnoe, (see here-after). PEGGY GORHAM, who married Thomas Redmon, WILLIAM GORHAM, ANN GORHAM, who married John Beck, BETSY GORHAM, who married Thomas Riggs, NANCY GORHAM, who married Abner Clarke, SUSANNAH GORHAM, who married John boyd and JOSHUA GORHAM. Before the final settlement of this suit in 1817, it is shown by an amended bill that Sanford Gorham had died leaving children and heirs and that George Burnoe had died leaving heirs. In another suit filed in Bourbon County Circuit Court (box 696-Gorham vs. Gorham Hrs., filed Dec. 1, 1826, and settled 1827) we find the children of Sanford Gorham as follows: JOHN GORHAM, GEORGE GORHAM, SANFORD GORHAM, HARVEY T. GORHAM, WILLIAM GORHAM, AARON GORHAM, THOMAS RICHARD GORHAM, THORNTON GORHAM, BETSEY GORHAM, who had married Charles C. Russell, SUSAN GORHAM, who had married Sylvester Bailey, and of these Aaron, Thomas and Thornton were "under 21 years of age" by Thomas Elliot, their guardian. There were 2 Gorham on the Miller Cherokee Roll (Rejected). I assume some are on the accepted roll, but I do not have it. There were many people falsely rejected. Their applications, rejected or not, state their ancestry and why they feel they were of Cherokee descent. They were Eada and John W. both from OK. The table of contents of a new academic study of the roll is at http://members.aol.com/rarebk The site also has on-line the surname index of "Starr's Old Cherokee Families and Their Genealogy," a Cherokee Genealogy Tutorial which is a great primer on how to do effective Indian genealogy research, the 1835 Cherokee census which is within the tutorial, other indexes, and a Native American CD which appears to contain huge amounts of Native American genealogical material. Very fascinating. Steve ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Try it today - there's no risk! Dear Michele, I can understand your frustration on not finding help on your father's birth mother. My GORHAM data would not help you much yet, but I can tell you that my GORHAMS (and there were many of this family) lived in Putnam Col., Indiana. There was another GORHAM family from New England, and while you cannot rule them out, I'd guess yours came from the Indiana GORHAMS because of proximity to Chicago. You could check the 1920 Federal Census Soundex for Indiana and see if there is a Jean M. GORHAM. At least you have the M. middle initial! I don't have a Jean GORHAM in my family file, but would be happy to send you the closest generations so you could take a look and have a frame of reference, if you found a Jean GORHAM on the 1920 census. The 1930 Census should be out in 2003, which may help you even more. Best of luck! I have a copy of his adoption decree which says his birth mother's name is Jean M. Gorham. Although I have been very successful on my other genealogy projects, after five years I have yet to find a single clue regarding the elusive Jean. Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated!
