I just got an email today, in response to my original reply to you, and the people who wrote it suggested asking if you could actually provide documentation for the Gorham family (that ties in w/ John Howland via his daughter Desire) going back that far. They said that they are researching the Gorhams, too. Anyway, that would be so cool. Another person also has told me that the Gorhams seem to go back that far, but am wondering if there is any kind of documentation for it. Any ideas at all? Thanks! How wonderful to meet living relatives through genealogy research!! I've already met a third cousin, however many times removed, that I never knew before, and now you. Through the volunteer research of several other people, I've been able to trace our Gorham heritage lineally. Nathaniel is a however-many great uncle of mine (and my sister and brother), as well, on our paternal grandmother's side of the family. Our Gorham line comes through Jabez Gorham, one of John and Desire (Howland) Gorham's sons. Which line do you come through, just out of curiosity?

    2. Frank Annis
    3. Good afternoon everyone, first off I am not related to the Gorham family, but I am looking for info about a certain family member. Let me explain. My grandpa ERNEST HERMAN WENZEL born 11-22-1883 somewhere in MO, was the son of HARRIET (HATTIE) MCKEE and someone named WENZEL. He was born out of wedlock. As it turns out HATTIE was found in the 1880 MO census in Desoto, Jefferson county, MO in the household of CORNELIUS GORHAM 53 and his wife AMANDA GORHAM 44 and several of their children. HATTIE was listed as 19, servant. Is anyone out there researching this GORHAM family? Would you know of any Wenzels in the area? Are there any family stories about a servant living in the home being in a "delicate condition" and not married? Any help at all would be wonderful! Thank you, Pam

Although I must say that the research on this has been small. I have found very little on this particular unit. The Los Angeles Mounted Rifles, C.S.A. is the only alternative. Its organization was just before the war and Southern sympathizers in Calif. wanted some action. Albert Sidney Johnston, future Confederate General killed at Shiloh, served as a private in this pre-war band. Before it had the chance to be designated a California regiment, its companys were broken up and consolidated in the Texas Cavalry. Members of the Los Angeles Mounted Rifles probably served the War as Texas Cavalry under the command of Gen. Henry H. Sibley in the Arizona campaign and later, Red River campaign in Louisiana. Erik
