My grandmother's name was Olive Christina Gorham and her mother's maiden name was Taylor. She named one of her sons Joel "Franklin." She lived in Oklahoma and Texas and I understand her part of the Gorham family was a large part of the Chamal Colony who went to Mexico in the early 1900's. I also remember my mother mentioning a great-aunt Vi. Do you suppose it would be safe to say that Franklin Pierce Gorham was her father? Thank you for any help!

It's nice of you to respond to our family message boards. I enjoy knowing there are more of us out there somewhere. I'm gonna post my address if you want to write me. I'd love to hear anything you might want to share with me. If you haven't read a post from last month, I'm having to tell you that we lost a member of the Gorham family on Feb. 23, earlier this year 2003. Enrique 'Henry' Gorham was my grandfather. He was born August 21, 1918, in Chamal. He was the son of William Arthur Gorham, the oldest child and last living of the boys(age 84 at his death). He leaves behind 3 living sisters, Sarah, Lila, and Maria. They all live here in Houston. He raised me, along with my grandmother, Anna Mae(Kinnard) Gorham from birth, so he is my daddy for always. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting extended family of the Gorham name except for those that have lived here. I noticed you mentioned Oregon. That's a long ways from here. I know that the Chamal-Blalock Colony 100th year c! elebration is this November. I wish to go but it's difficult with 3 young children. I guess I can wait 'til it rotates back to San Antonio or Houston. Well Roberta, you can e-mail me at this address: JennyDrew22@aol.com, whenever you want to share any information. Or you can write me at: 7426 Dallas, Houston, TX 77011. I'm somewhat young but I love sharing our family's past. Daddy left behind 10 children (including myself), 31 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 1 g-g-grandchild. Just to let you know that we are a big bunch now. And what I wish for is that there would have been more boys left to pass down the Gorham name. Hahahahaha. I believe there are only 5 possibilities left, what a shame. Not that we love them any less of course. Alright, well keep in touch. Take care and God bless. Jenny Gorham- Galvan

You have received a message from Kathy Davison who is a cousin (actually a double cousin to my husband), her mother is the half sister to his father she married his mother's brother Gordon Gorham. Several years ago my husband Jim got to meet his great uncle Henry Edgar, he came to Oregon for a visit. I have been working on several different lines in our genealogy including Gorham. He is roughly the same age as my padrastro (Ben Gorham, son of Ed, also from Chamal). Enrique's sons, Willie and David, my cousin (Harvie Belshe), several other boys Taylors and other and I used to romp around Chamal during the summers in the 50s and 60s. My uncle Wade was married to Elena, a daughter, as I recall, of Enrique. Diane, Richard and Leta Ruth are cousins of mine who I believe are grandchildren of Enrique. Sorry to hear of his passing. I was only a child when I knew him, but by all accounts he was a good man. I'll let my step-father (padrastro) know. He would want to know. Lee

Our Gorham family lost a very wonderful man earlier this year. Enrique (Henry) Gorham born August 21, 1918, died on February 23, 2003. It was also the 60th wedding anniversary to his wife, Anna Mae Kinnard-Gorham. It's been a hard ordeal for our family. He was the son of William Arthur Gorham and grandson of Franklin Pierce Gorham. He was the eldest child and leaves his sisters Sarah, Lila, and Maria. Also 9 living children, 31 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. I will also include myself (grandchild) as his child because he raised me from birth. Thank you "daddy." I do not know if anyone was aware of his passing, so i wanted to post it here. He was born in Chamal, so i thought it was important to let others know that an original resident of that lil town passed away here in Houston,Tx. We will miss him dearly. If anyone cares to write me for any information please do so at this address: Jenny Gorham-Galvan, 742! 6 Dallas, Houston,Tx, 77011.

Just about a kilometer north of Chamal Nuevo there is an American cemetery. My grandmother (Virginia Belshe Ramos), Uncle Norman (who I never knew), Uncle Nolen and Uncle Wade are buried there. I bear such a strong resemblance to the Belshe family, that people who don't even know me personally, know that I am of the Belshe family. The patriarch of this family, Childress Webster Jacob Belshe, lived in Chamal until around 1976. He sold his farm around that time and moved to McAllen, Tx with his oldest daughter, my aunt Ruth. He died in McAllen in 1981 and is buried there. Only his daughters (Nellie and Ruth) and a step-son (Ramon) are still alive. The descendants of the Chamal Blalock Colony have a reunion once a year. This year they will hold the reunion in Chamal. There are still some remnants of the Taylor, Medlin and Snell families still in Chamal. I just last November had a nice talk with Lillian Taylor (Snell) at her home there. Lee

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/5519/BiZ.2ACIB/236.3 Message Board Post: My step-father is Ben Gorham. He was born in the Chamal Colony. His father's name was Ed. We (kids) only ever called him "Mr. Ed". Ben is now married to my mother, who was also born in Chamal, Nellie Belshe. The Belshe family and the Ed Gorham family lived across a creek from each other. As far as I know the Ed Gorham house is still standing. My grandfather Belshe's last house (which was cinderblock) has crumbled, but the doors and windows from that last house are now part of a new house that has been constructed nearly on top of the old house's foundation. Interestingly the barn (made from palm logs), which was built in early or middle '50s is still standing and in use. I think Ben was the oldest child of about 8 or 9 children. I think he was the only male. One of his sisters, Raquel, still lives in Chamal. At least one sister lives in Monterrey, NL. Ben and my mom live in River Oaks, which is suburb on the northwest side of Ft. Worth. I just visited Chamal last Oct.-Nov. timeframe. The founders of the Chamal Colony are having benches built and placed around the town plaza. The Gorham and Belshe family are represented as well as the Taylor, Snell and many other families. Have you ever been to Chamal? The descendants of the original colonists have an annual reunion. This year it will actually be in Chamal in November, I believe. Lee
