Gloria, I would just about bet the bank that is him! This family was in Edgefield co SC before 1790, came to Salem district, which is part of Sumter Co June 24 1803 when he bought land known as Gaskins mill from Ezekial Gaskins, that was granted to Daniel DUBOSE 10/15/1784 on the Black River. This was witnessed by Moses Gordon. I believe their father was Moses Gordon who was son or grandson of Roger Gordon who was founder of Wmsburg Co. SC. There is a book on Williamsburg Co. SC that has wonderful stories about the Gordon family. I am so glad to hear from you! Now that I have someone to bounce things around with, I will look even harder. Will go through all my notes and organize them, so they make sense and write you back. Have you got info on their children?? They disappeared from Sumter after about 1810. I bet that is when they went to La. Gloria, I looked in the Orlando library for your DuBose family and had a ball with it!! Have you ever seen the book "Darlingtoniana" bu Eliza Cown Ervin and Horace Fraser Rudisill? I made a lot of copies of it, so if you haven't seen it I will send it to you. It was kind of an old book, but would be a treasure to you because of the history of your family It has a LOT of DuBose history in there. One story in particular concerning one of the DuBose women who was captured by the indians but carried on and talked so, the indians turned her loose because they did not want her "contaminating" the squaws and encouraging them to nag their husbands! Also a really cute one about a dau. of Col. Benton, Gillie Hinton Benton who m col. Isaiah DuBose of Darlington 10/7/1808. Seems her father did not approve of the marriage and sat there with on the front porch, shotgun on his lap. Gillie slipped out the back door and took off with him. As they rode off , he took a shot at them! Later they became great friends. It also said that Col. Dubose had the same ideas about his own daus. as all of them had to run off the be married! I also saw in a family history of the DuBose family where Martha m. Thomas Gordon and had 4 children. Did all the children go to La too? I see a son named James and wonder if he might be mine. You know that Isaac Dubois fled France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes? There is info on him and some of the other families in St James Santee, Plantaion Parish "Carolina on His Mind". Gives marriage info on Isaac m. Catharine Boisseau July 9, 1749, Frances m. Peter Bochett June 1751, Peter m. Ann Mouzon June 11 1752, John m. Sarah Mouzon Nov. 16, 1758, James m. Hester Guerin Dec. 11, 1760, Heser m. Vincent Guerin Aug. 19, 1793, Frances m. William Wells Oct 20, 1774 Susannah m. William Plowden Oct 20, 1774 Martha Est'r m. Daniel Anderson May 6, 1794. There is a lot more info if you want me to send it to you, send me your snail mail. Also info in the vertical file and other books that I did not copy because I don't know what you have or what you are looking for. Please send me info on Thomas or Moses family in La. as it might shed some light on my James Harvey Gordon who m. Elizabeth Lacey of Williamsburg SC. Darlington, Williamsburg, Sumter, Georgetown all are next door neighbors and have a lot of info recorded in Charleston. I am seeing in Sumter county filed May 8, 1820 a record of a lawsuit naming Thomas and Moses Gordon against Robert Wilson, David Witherspoon, Thomas Wilson and his wife and Haratio Reese. It is possible that James Harvey Gordon could have been m. to Elizabeth Lacey around that time, as she would have been 22 yrs old and he is prob. older. He may have stayed in SC when they went to La. I don't find James at all in census records, so don't really know how old he was. I found Elizabeth living beside her son Wright Gordon in Pulaski Co. Ga in 1860 in close proximity to her bro. James Lacey and one of James' daus. Agnes living with Elizabeth. All Elizabeth's known children say they were b. in SC, oldest 1822 youngest 1835. There is a record of a Salem Black River Presbyterian Church in Caroliniana Library on microfilm that may have some clues for us. Thomas and Moses were founding members. I hope to get someone or get up there myself to look at the info. The FHC has it but won't lend out to the local FHCs so would have to go to SLC or Columbia SC to look at it! Hope to hear from you soon!
