    3. Hi list, I just received a reply from Bill Waltman (waltman@ametro.net). The message was in reply to a message I sent him. At the bottom was "take a look to the attachment". The attachment filename was "docs.scr" and it was 13.3KB. This file contains the W32.badtrans.13312@mm virus. I was lucky as my Norton antivirus picked it up and stopped the file from opening. According to the Symantec website, this virus e-mails itself to the senders of all unread e-mail messages in the infected computer. Janet

This is a capture from the Microsoft Knowledge Base concerning attachments: SYMPTOMS When you use Microsoft Outlook to send e-mail containing attachments through the Internet, some recipients using e-mail clients, other than Outlook, report that the mail message includes an additional file called Winmail.dat. The file is usually very small, but cannot be opened in the mail message. CAUSE The Winmail.dat file is used to preserve formatting that the sending client includes in the message, but is not recognized by the receiving client. In the case of Outlook, the Winmail.dat file includes Rich Text Formatting (RTF) instructions. This type of formatting is used with the Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format and when using Microsoft Word as an e-mail editor. RESOLUTION To avoid including Winmail.dat, use the Plain Text mail format. To select Plain Text If anyone sees this attachment, now you will know why. I hope this sets some minds to rest. 3. Earnestine and list, Just because YOU didn't receive any message with an attachment from B. Waltman does not mean that his/her system is not infected with a virus. Educating oneself about the way these virii spread is one link in the chain of stopping and preventing them from spreading further. Many have erroneously thought that they didn't get a virus because when they clicked on the link or opened the file, they got a message saying that the file was corrupt. That message is the virus installing itself onto one's system. These virii infect a system and then send themselves out to others through the messages in the inbox. They do not go to the address book. This latest one is particularly nasty as it actually quotes from messages received. The virus comes from the infected system not some third party sending it out under your name. Outlook and Outlook Express are particularly vulnerable to these infections. Please heed the warnings. Do not open any attachments that you are not expecting. Install Anti-Virus software on your system, run it daily, and update it religiously (at least once a month).
