    3. Susan, I'm not sure what your question is or which Gordon you're looking for, but I have the book and would be happy to look up your family. 2. In a message dated 5/22/99 8:20:03 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << the book "Gordons of the Deep South". >> Where did the Gordons of the Deep South originate? I am stuck on my great-grandfather's family in Jackson Co., TN. He was born in about 1805 in TN, and the only Gordon in the county of an age to have been his father was Richard Gordon. Jackson County has experienced a couple of court house fires, so records are sketchy at best, and we haven't made a firm connection. Richard Gordon was born in Henry Co. VA in 1766, and his family moved from there to Wilkes Co., NC, where Richard served three months in the militia and then they moved on to Wilkes Co., GA, to Franklin Co., GA. This was reported on Richard's RW pension application, but from that point he joined the militia again, marched through Sumner Co., TN to Powell Valley, VA., married and moved to Madison Co., VA (KY) and finally to Jackson Co., TN., never to live with his birth family again. James C. Gordon married Martha J. sometime before 1835, and their son James W. was born in Alabama. They were back in Jackson Co. by 1850. Does the trek from Henry Co. VA, to Wilkes Co. NC, to Wilkes and Franklin Co. GA match any of those Gordons of the Deep South? Thanks for any help you can give me. Joyce

    2. John: "Gordons of the Deep South" by Erminie Northcutt Marshall is a hard book to find. It is out of print and only by accident can one find a copy. I have a copy made from the book I borrowed. I will be most happy to "look up" for you. The book follows the descendants of John and Ruth Gordon. Unfortunately, it has many dead ends. My John H. Gordon was born in Mississippi in 1839 and moved to Simpson County. He married a South Carolina lady. Let me know what you would like me to look up for you. Pat

    3. Susan, Govin (at least one of them) was son of John and Ruth and brother of William in Union District/Co, SC, I believe. Consequently, Posey Gordon's uncle. I have not been able to find a copy of the book so I don't have much of this on papaer. Does the book cover what happened to Posey's children after he died in Greene Co, AL? Thanks, Hurston Anderson >Hi, > >I am descended from the Gordons list in the Deep South book through Govin >Gordon. He had land in Union Co. 2. Susan: there is a young architect here in Jackson, MS, who is also a descendant of Govin Gordon. He loaned me the book "Gordons of the Deep South". We think my Gordons are one of the threads the author could not find. However, I have not been working on my Gordon line very long and have only gotten back to my gggrandfather, John H. Gordon. 2. Hi, I am descended from the Gordons list in the Deep South book through Govin Gordon. He had land in Union Co. SC that bordered Posey Gordon which he sold before moving to Jones Co. SC between 1806-1815 per the book. After Govin died in 1815 his wife, 2 daughters and Govin Gordon, Jr. moved to Green Co., AL. Govin's daughter Violet married James Chandler and was one of the two daughters who moved to Green Co. Maybe there is pattern to their migrations. I haven't documented this line since it was listed in the book except for the Alabama part. Susan Kirk - [email protected]

    3. Sheila, I know we have communicated before about Posey Gordon who was my gggrandfather, but I wonder if we could exchange some auxiliary data about other relatives? Do you have an FTW file or Gedcom? I would be delighted to share mine with you. Also, I haven't been very genealogically active lately, having been really busy. Is all this on-line somewhere? For instance, after Posey and family got to Greene County, AL what happened to his children since he and wife (Elizabeth Simms) died so young? I know where Elizabeth Emmaline ended, but not any of the others. And, where the heck does the name Posey come from, anyway. Sons are often named for relatives, but there are no Posey's that I know of. Maybe they were with General Posey (purported illegitimate son of George Washington) in the Rev War. I don't know enough about his command nor where Willim served other than statement that he was a Capt in Brandon's Regiment. Any ideas? I really need to fill in more on the Gordons and would appreciate the help. I really can't trace my Andersons back past 1756, and apparently to VA. My connection is that Elizabeth (Posey's daughter) married Uriah Hardy Anderson my gggrandfather. Have a great day, Hurston Anderson >Lordie, my eyes are crossing and brain is in a whirl after reading about all >those Gordons!!!! 2. Hi Hurston, its Sheila. I have decided that there is a hole in my brain and all memory cells have just fallen in, never to return. I can't find my copy of your e-mail anywhere. I know I was going to check some Gordon info for you but can't remember what!! I have had sinus infection and pneumonia again so I shall blame my lack of memory on high fever! I do remember that I intended to ask if you descend from the Anderson family that was in SC. Don't remember if I did ask but don't think you answered if I did. God bless, Sheila

    2. Lois, I don't have anything on your Sara Jane Elizabeth Gordon. Have you checked the 1890 census? If you are lucky you might find some other Gordon relatives living with Sara and it could point you in the right direction. By the way, I was born and reared in Vicksburg,MS We didn't celebrate the fourth of July until Dwight Eisenhower visited! When anyone in Vicksburg spoke of"The War" everyone understood which one they meant. Sorry I am unable to help you. God bless, Sheila

    3. Hurston, I bought my copy, which was the last one in stock, from a bookstore in Longview, TX. I had called Ben Reynolds in Longview; his name was posted to this forum as having had books, but he had already sold his last copy. However, he had just visited A&D Booksellers indowntown Longview and saw one on the shelf. I guess my timing was just right. It's my understanding that Erminia Northcutt Marshall lived in that area, so it's quite possible that others may be around. The bookstore owners may know of other copies or watch for one. Here's the mailing address for the bookstore in case you want to pursue that avenue: A&D Booksellers, Inc., P.O. Box 1443, 302 E. Tyler St., Longview, TX 75601. Good luck! Lois "L. We have her name as Sarah Jane Elizabeth Gordon, born November 29, 1853, died November 11, 1893, around Calhoun Co. MS. Another Gordon researcher provided information on a Wade H. My 3 ggf is Thomas GORDON born ca 1760... and all we've ever seen in census is 'born in VA' .... I'm wondering if this could be a 'link' I've been looking for -- for years! (HE had a daughter named Elizabeth also. Family lore has it that after Thomas' father died, the estate was divided between Thomas and his brother (?); and that Thomas freed the slaves took off 'over the mountains'... but noone seems to know any more than that!) ANY help is most appreciated! Rose (GORDON) Till
