    3. Hello Tom, I appreciate the offer. I don't know much at this time, but I've sent for my gggrandmother's birth certificate. That should give me some more information on Ella and may indicate where she was living when my gggrandmother was born. If it is OK with you, I get in touch after I get that info. Thanks John Mullen > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Saturday, May 22, 1999 4:31 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: > > > John, > > I live in Boston and could do some research for you. 3. Sheila, Thanks so much for your offer to help on my Gordons. I have a James Harvey Gordon b. we think 1793 or so prob. SC but have never found him in census records so can't be sure. He m. Elizabeth Lacey b. 1798 in Williamsburg Co. SC. I don't find this family until 1860 census in Ga, but they say in 1860 they are from NC, but every other census says from SC. On pension apps. they say SC. My interest, Wright Gordon is s/o James and Elizabeth Lacey Gordon and moved to GA around 1840, m. Rosetta Pope in Pulaski co. Ga 1847 and most of my family still lives there. He was in C/W, captured and paroled at Appomatox, made it home but d. 2 weeks after from fever contracted during the war. I have not been able to locate what part of SC they are from. Have researched extensively in Wmsburg. because that is definitely where Eliz. Lacey is from, and while there are Gordons there, they are not ours. Those Gordons are descended prob. from Roger Gordon who came in 1740-50 to Wmsburg and settled near Kingstree SC. He was from Pa. and most of his descendants scattered into other parts of the state. I have researched every line that was still there in 1790, but that is nowhere near all his descendants. I really have a hunch that the Buffington/Gordon line is part of this line also, as there are some of their Gordons that had land in Pulaski and also they m. into some of the same lines, Daniel, etc. that also settled near or in Pulaski. Wright Gordon b. 1824 supposedly had 2 older bros., Alexander and Elliot (not proven), and definitely had 2 younger bros. Harvey b. 1832 and Hardy b. 1837 in SC. So many puzzle pieces, so little concrete proof!! I have a little bit on Govin Gordon that I got from the Leonard Andrea files. Govin Gordon who m. Mary Harris, was Govin Gordon Jr. s/o Govin Gordon SR page 139 in "Gordons of the Deep South Govin Gordon's will p. 41 in the book does not name a son Govin Gordon, Jr. ,but says that "as for the rest of my children I have given them all their portion" Gvoin Gordon Jr is shown on deeds p. 139 of the book, Also shown on page is his wife Mary. The records that you have of Govin Gordon, Jr;s wife Mary were sent to me a short time ago. these records show: Jeanette Harris, wife of Abel or Levy Anderson. I haven't these records with me, but remember that the Anderson was one of Abraham Andersons sons who sigend the deed made to Gabriel Anderson on p. 27 in the book "Gordons of the Deep South" I have seen the record- Abraham Anderson d. in Newberry co. SC ca 1790. One child was Elizabeth Andrson w/o Thomas Gordon but gives no reference or proof. Have you the proof? (This is from will records of Berkely co. Will 11 July, 1763, Newberry file: Anderson Abraham Wife Ruth To: William Gordon, Goven Gordn and George Gordon (wife's ch.) my 4 yst sons Abraham, Levy, Henry, and Jacob. To Jacob Brown (appears to be wife's son or son inlaw) my son, Abel Anderson, and "all my children". Major Thomas Gordon's wife was said to be Elizabeth Caldwell.. Also has on John and Thomas Gordon: from p 342 from the book "Newberry Historical and Gen." by the late Geoge Leland Summers John Gordon rec. a grant of 460 ac of land in both Union and Newberry districts on Enoree River, then a part of old Craven co. SC in the yr. 1754. Major Thomas Gordon, a son of John Gordon served as a patriot officer in the R/W... He was first sheriff of Newberry co. when co. est. in 1782 was also justice of peace. He m. Elizabeth Anderson, some of his children were Ruth Gordon who. m. Maj. Thomas O'Mearon Eli Gordon, who m. a Miss Valentine Jesse Gordon m. and left Newberry co.\ John Gordon Elizabeth Gordon. Also this bit on Posey Gordon: William Gordon, Sr names in his will siged 19 Apr 1781 pr 7 Nov 1788 96 District SC File 39-845 Abbeville co. SC Elizabeth Gordon, his wife and Exec. and four Children John Gordon William gordon Posey Gordon Cassey Gordon, Dau. also mentioned, but no relationship given, Gabriel Anderson ex. and Thomas Gordon ex. Also on Eli Gordon Sr. will signed 25 Mar 1838 pr 18 oct 1847 Eli Gordon Sr names in his will, Rebecca Gordon his wife Children: Thomas Gordon, Valentine Gordon, Mary C. Lyles, Abraham Gordon, Elizabeth Sims, Eli Gordon Jr, and Rebecca Gordon

    1. Govin Gordon
    2. Susan, there were Govins(family name) in SC when Major Thomas Gordon died in 1808.Among administrations papers in the Estate of Thomas Gordson was a voucher."Note on or before the first day of Jan. I promise to pay Lucy Govin $12.25 for value received of her." Signed Aug.1808 Thomas Gordon Joseph Govin signed receipt for payment by Eli Gordon, date May 20,1810. I presume that the Govin family must have been close friends, or it is possible they were kin for William and Elizabeth ? Gordon to name a son for them. God bless, Sheila

I am descended from the Gordons listed in the book The Gordons of the Deep South. I have not independently verified the info in the book except as to how it relates to my more recent ancestors. I come from the line of John/Ruth>Govin,Sr./Sarah>Violet/James Chandler>Margaret E. Chandler/George T. Garnett. The line went from VA>SC>Jones Co.,GA>Greene Co.,AL. Does anyone have any info on the John and Ruth who started it all? Has anyone verified the info the Gordons of the Deep South Book? Is anyone researching this line or a close link? Your help will be greatly appreciated and I'll gladly share anything I have. Thanks Susan Kirk - [email protected] --part1_473a754c.2478a1fa_boundary--

    2. Hi Hurston, I only made copies of the book about those lines relating Govin Gordon, the older brother. There is some extra info in them. Who is Posey's uncle or is that who you are trying to find? How do you know that Posey is a nephew and not a nickname for a brother? I don't have access to the census info for Greene Co. Ala right now but have you actually seen a census for him? In the original list of brothers there is no Posey but Govin Gordon Jr - Govin's little brother went from Jones Co. GA to Greene Ala with his sisters and Mother. Govin the older died in Ga. If I run across anything when I pick the Gordon line up to research I'll be glad to pass it along. Susan Kirk

    3. Pat Spencer: You mention several things in your recent post that catch my interest. First, what is the book "Gordon's of the Deep South." My Gordon line began in South Carolina, then went to ALabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and finally to Illinois during the Civil War. I am surely interested in finding someone who has this book so that I might request a couple of quick lookups. Secondly, you say your gg-grandfather is John H. Gordon. If he was a physician in Bond county Illinois (b.1842 in AL, d.1929 in IL) then I have much information for you and we are related. Bill Gordon
