    1. Re: BOONE, MO: DAVID GORDON, SR. & descs.
    2. There was a David Gordon listed in the Adair County, Ky census of 1810, along with a Jesse Gordon. This census was alphabetized, so have no idea if they were living close to one another or not. He was listed with 6 slaves, but no family. His age was 45+ If you don't think he was too old to be your ancestor, you may want to check him out. 3. Hi, all, Hoping to find the family & wife of, as well as connect to others descended from David GORDON, Sr., who d. 1848 or 1849 in Boone Co., MO. David's wife is unknown to me at this point; he first patented land in Boone in 1824, moving from an unknown KY Co. He may have been born anywhere, though I suspect VA, SC or NC. Within 15 years, David had patented nearly 1,000 acres in Boone Co., and built a large plantation house that survived until 1998 [when it was burnt by an arsonist, I have heard...] David's will named the following children and grandchildren: Sons, David GORDON Jr., Charles W. GORDON, George W. GORDON, James M. GORDON, John B. GORDON; grandsons Weillington [sic] GORDON [apparently, son of John B. {dec'd.?}]; other children of John B. GORDON, their mother, Sophia GORDON; daughters, Polly CLARK, Elizabeth DOTY, Emily GUITAR, Jane AUSTIN I am descended from Jane GORDON, b. 1821/22, KY; m. 1839, Boone Co., MO, William W. AUSTIN, b. VA. William's family is undentified as of yet. Jane & William's children were: Mary Ann AUSTIN, b. 1839/40 David Jones AUSTIN, b. April, 1841 Virginia AUSTIN, b. 1843/44 Leonora AUSTIN, b. 1845/46 William AUSTIN, b. 1846/47 Theodosia B. AUSTIN, b. 1848/49 There may have been other children of Jane & William that I have not yet located. Does anyone connect to this family? Look forward to hearing from you! 1. Re: Book on Gordons
    2. Betty, I noticed that you stated on an Email message that you have Gordons in VA. I wonder if we might have the same line. Mine is Hugh Gordon born 1740 in Scotland . He married Sarah Owens daughter of Nathaniel. They later moved to Washington CO KY from VA. Does this sound like your line? Viola L. Van Orden

    1. Re: Gordons
    2. Sue, thanks for the contact. How do you relate to Hugh and Sarah Owens Gordon? I only ask this to see where we have a common ancestor. I have found Cousins all over this country through different lines that I am working on. I am sorry to say that I haven't found out much on the Gordons. I have had several people to say that he (Hugh) was born in Scotland and that his father's name was James. That differs from what I had heard. I will keep you in mind and will be glad to exchange info. If you can prove your descendancy from Hugh you are eligible for the DAR, if you are interested.

    3. I have been sitting quietly and jealously watching as so many of you make your GORDON connections. I have been researching my GORDON roots for over 5 years and still no connections. I thought I would try once more. I have never, ever found anything on my grandfather, Harry John GORDON, and he lived with us all my childhood. I have done all the basics, but if anyone has any more ideas, please let me know. Harry John GORDON - b. 1895 in New Jersey - married Lola Agnes LEAKE - 1923 - in Arkansas. They settled in Chicago and had 3 children-Harry, Jr., Shirley, and Thelma. He worked at Bell & Howell Camera until 1960 when he moved to Baytown, Texas with my family. My dad was the informant on the death certificate and he knew nothing. He died in 1974. I got a copy of his ss application and it said his parents were Stanley GORDON and Elizabeth RYAN. I can find nothing on them either. HELP!!! -- Carol Gordon Papke [email protected] COOMER GORDON LEAKE THOMPSON http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/5930

    3. Dear Gordon's, this his is my first time to post to your list. My husband and I live in the beautiful hills of Brown County, IN after escaping from the city life of Dallas. We attend about 25 Scottish festivals throughout the year around the country where many of the Gordon folk have their clan tents. I'd like to keep you all posted on the Scottish Festival/Game circuit as I think it is also an important link to our heritage. For all of you in the Midwest, July 17 and 18 there will be a Scottish Festival in Columbus, IN at Mill Race Park. The Ceilidh is Friday night and costs $15 it is held at the Ramada Inn. Can you tell I am the publicity chairperson for the festival? Also, I would be re-miss in not mentioning my web site at:http://www.greatscotshop.com This is the only time I'll write that we have Gordon ties, Scarves, kilt and clan items. Just wanted you to know--don't want to make this a forum to sell my wares--just mentioned it this time as it is a very important part of my life. Thanks, Sally Great Scot P.O. 3. Trish, I think I have a hit with you on the Gordon's in Giles County. If so they are definitely part of the Gordons of the Deep South coming from Ruth and John Gordon who moved from VA to Union District, SC fifty years earlier...and then offspring went on west to AL, TN, etc. I would greatly like to make the connection with the Gordons of Greene Co, AL...a connection which I am certain exists, but which I cannot prove. Do you have any more info befoe Thomas Kennedy Gordon...especially forebears. I believe Mont Gordon is quite near Brick Church, Giles County, TN where the connections is more likely to be made...at least with my portion. Does any of this sound familiar. 3. Trish Boehm, Saw your post to Ethel yesterday. I am tracing Gordons who settled into either Limestone or Madison county in 1816. What I know is that they described themselves as from "Huntsville, AL." Although the 1820 AL census is spotty at best, there is info about Limestone and Madison counties. It looks like my folks were probably in Madison, but it also looks like one of them may have been in Limestone. If I recall correctly, there was some shifting of borders between the counties back then. At any rate, my 3great-grandfather, Hugh Gordon, came to AL in 1816 from South Carolina. James Gordon, his son, and my great, great grandfather was born in 1818. These two and their families (at least) left AL in about 1842 or 1843 and settled in northern Mississippi, in Tippah county, for about 5 years before moving on to Arkansas for about 10 years and then into middle Illinois in Clinton and Bond counties. I am wondering if you would know if we might have northern Alabama ties. Could these Gordons in Limestone and Madison counties have been related? Bill Gordon

Thomas Hart Benton was a North Carolinian who settled for a while in Tennessee, then moved on to Missouri where he owned a newspaper. He raised a regiment during the War of 1812 and went on to serve in the US Congress from Missouri and was a strong supporter of President Andrew Jackson. He would have been well known and popular with southerners. Insight can be gained into the parents of your ancestor when you know the origin of his name, and knowing who was famous and popular at the time may help. If nothing else, it may keep you from chasing your rabbit down the wrong hole. Joyce
