    3. Joyce, Point taken and thank you for solving a mystery for me. One of my ancestor's brother was named Thomas Benton and we never knew how he came by that name. Now I do. His father also named a son Andrew Jackson. Although they lived in Mississippi and Thomas Hart Benton lived in Missouri. Mine did serve in the war of 1812 from Mississippi. Mary

    2. Hello Hurston, Maybe we have our wires crossed. In my case that's more than a possibility. I'm tracing the Gordons, not the Hamiltons. Sorry not to be of any help to you. Best of luck in your quest. Trish

    3. Bjorn, I have a similar problem with my Norwegian ancestors - apparently when my Great-Grandfather Johannas Andrias Zakarias Knutesen came to the States from Bergen in the 1890's, he decided there were too many Knutesen's in New York, and so he adopted the family name "Kronstad" - they had lived at #14 Kronstadveien... It does make it a bit more difficult to track them down! 3. Bjorn --- As I related some time ago, during the late 60s, there was sitcom on British TV about a Gordon's tailor shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. The tailor was Jewish and the shop had been in his family for generations and even bore one of "By Appointment, Tailor to (an early Scottish monarch)" legends on the shop window. Most of the comedy revolved around the constant confusion between his Jewishness and his Scottishmness. Just to reinforce the point, that not all Gordons may be Scottish: adjacent to a nearby military base her in Maryland, there was a combination tailor shop/dry cleaners run by a Gordon family, who were Jewish. Whether they were of Scottish descent or not, I have no idea. Anyway, in direct answer to your question: Yes, someone who was NOT a Gordon clan member could very well have the surname Gordon. An immigrant, wishing to assimilate more quickly, could very well choose the surname Gordon to replace his original surname. -- Cheers, Jim Gordon, Laurel, MD USA Bjorn Aas wrote: > > First; I don't mean any of you! > > Do you know if it happened that people i Scotland took the surname GORDON, > without belonging to the clan in some way? > > I Norway, people have taken the name of the farm they lived on as family > name, even if they never belonged to the owners or heirs to the property. > (Once a well known, controversial preacher found that one of his > farmhelpers had moved, and started a hot-dog stand with the preacher's name!) > > I'm searching for a link between GORDONS in Kirkbean, Kirkudbrightshire, > and the rest of the GORDONS. 3. Trish, Have you info on where your Hamiltons lived after leaving Giles Co, TN? It is a stretch for me to find my Hamiltons from there because they ended in TX before marrying into Andersons, but two other branches are from Giles Co, TN, and my Hamiltons are hard for me to trace back. They seem to have been in AR in Civil War era and moved to TX late 1890's. Hurston Anderson >Hello, Ethel, > I 'm Trish Boehm, Gr. granddaughter of David Marion Gordon of Mont >Gordon, Giles Co. 3. Hi all, I believe my GORDON's of Santa Clara County, California were natives of England. Elizabeth B. GORDON (surname unknown) and John H. GORDON (H may stand for Hardingham) were probably born around 1820 in England and by the 1840's were living in CA. Does anyone know how they traveled during that era and does this families whereabouts sound familiar? Terri Gordon, Redmond, WA

    2. Thanks for the info on the Gordon's. My relationship to them is: Hugh and Sarah Owens Gordon's daughter , Mary. She married Anderson Jeffries. They had son , Isham Jeffries , who married Jane Parker They had son ,Anderson Jeffries, who married Judith Scott. They had son , Thomas Jeffries , who married Adeline Lipsey. They had a daughter, Sallie Jeffries , who married Clarence Lawson They had a son , William Holmes Lawson, my father. I wish we could prove, absolutely, who Hugh's father was. Don't you? I was born and raised in Elizabethtown, Ky. Only less than 50 miles from where Hugh and Sarah lived and was buried. I have heard from people who have been to the farm where they lived but the ones who have gone in the more recent past say they can find no trace of their graves. There is another example of--I wish that I had known that they lived there, when I lived in Elizabethtown . We often find things out after the fact. That happens so often, in genealogy. 2. Bjorn Aas
    3. First; I don't mean any of you! Do you know if it happened that people i Scotland took the surname GORDON, without belonging to the clan in some way? I Norway, people have taken the name of the farm they lived on as family name, even if they never belonged to the owners or heirs to the property. (Once a well known, controversial preacher found that one of his farmhelpers had moved, and started a hot-dog stand with the preacher's name!) I'm searching for a link between GORDONS in Kirkbean, Kirkudbrightshire, and the rest of the GORDONS. But it is slightly difficult to find archives in Norway related to Scottish genealogy, even if we do have a Mormon Family Research centre in our town.
