My records show Samuel Gordon marrying Rachel Herron November 11, 1790 in Madison Co., Kentucky. Recorded in Richmond, Madison Co., Kentucky Courthouse Marriage Book "A", p. 52. Excerpt from the record: "Samuel Gordon and Andrew Herron are held and firmly bound in the sum of 50 pounds current money November 9, 1790....... " The condition of the above obligation is such that there is a marriage shortly intended betwixt Samuel Gordon and Rachel Herron. This same Samuel and Rachel Gordon are now buried in Ragland, St. Clair Co., Alabama. Some of his history can be seen on my web page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/3619 I can see now that there must have been more than one Samuel Gordon. Of course only one married Rachel Herron. That being my g-g-g-g grandfather. I'd like to hear more about what you know. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 30, 1999 7:53 AM Subject: Samuel Gordon in KY > In a message dated 7/30/99 6:20:20 AM Central Daylight Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > Tell me what you can about the below mentioned Samuel Gordon. I have an Angeline Gordon that was in IN d. before 18who was married to a William Warren. I know noething more of her at all... except she (and William) had more than one child, and one of them was my grandfather, Elmer Elsworth Warren. Elmer, at the time he enlisted in the Army, his father also lived in Seymour Indiana Ripley Co. IN and his father was 41 years old at that time. His mother had already died. So, Angeline Gordon Warren died before April 18, 1898 He enlisted in the 24th Regiment of Infantry, for three years. He started out in the Columbus Barracks on April 22, 1898, then assigned to the Battery "A", 4th Artitlery, Fort Washington, MD.Ripley Co. Indiana 1882 Can any one help me on this line? I was wondering if anyone on the list could help me to identify this group of Gordons. I recently was sent information that indicates that my 3rd great grandfather, William Gordon, who was born VA, August 25, 1780 and d. Morgan Co., IN, August 19, 1861, lived in Buckingham Co., VA at least from 1814 to 1836. Buckingham was part of Henrico Co. until 1727. It was part of Goochland Co. until 1744. Then it was part of Albemarle Co. until 1758 when it officially became Buckingham County. In trying to identify my William's family, I found that in the 1780's - 90's there was a Notley Gordon living in this area. In 1804, a Richard Gordon bought land near the New Store (quarter plantation) from Anders B. In the 1810 Buckingham Co., VA census, Archibald, Joseph, and Samuel Gordon were all living in this area. In 1814, my William bought 63 acres, 10 miles south of the courthouse. In 1825 and again in 1833, he increased his land to 126 acres. These later additions were from the estate of a Stephen McCormack. Also in 1814 and 1815 an Archibald T. Gordon and a Robert D. Gordon purchased land on the Willis River, 11 miles south of the courthouse. On the Buckingham Co., VA Tax List of April 18, 1821, William Gordon and Obadiah Gordon are both listed in District 2. There must have been a family connection between these men as they all bought land very close to each other. Does anyone recognize any of them? I believe that William had two marriages. The first wife is unknown. I believe that there is a daughter named Nancy Anise Gordon, b. September 21, 1806 who married George Turner Pyle. There may have been sons named Joseph and John. William's second wife was Rhoda B. ?, b. March 9, 1800, VA, d. March 31, 1880, Morgan Co., IN. Their children were: William Mitchel Gordon, Samuel H. Gordon, Mary Catherine Gordon, Sarah P. Gordon, Susan F. Gordon, and Elizabeth Emily Gordon.
Apparently, the book "Gordons of the Deep South" (have never actually seen the book, personally) traces the family of John (b abt 1710 in Prince William Cty, VA, d 1756 in SC) and Ruth ? Gordon (b abt 1719 d SC 1789) from SC throughout the South. Amongst thousands of others, I am from this family. Has anyone ever been successful in traced John's parents, siblings, etc.? or Ruth's name, etc.? Hurston Anderson

I wish I could help. I have several WOOD's in my database but they are mostly southerners. Have you tried getting the death certificates of your grandparents and your father's siblings? A lot of times you simply have to dig it out for yourself. I know....many of my relatives didn't want to help either.

Fred Gordon, I have only a little info on my father's family. Unfortunatly when I was four my parents were divorced and I had no contact from him for almost 30 years. I finally got to meet him in August 1998 and he had a massive heart attack in September 1998. I was not able to get a lot of info form him. But here is what I have: Freeman James Wood -- Kingston,NY (my Father) Amity Wood---Myra(Buley?) Wood (his Parents) Amity Jr., John, Samuel --- his brother's Helen --- his sister (died at a young age) His parents and siblings have passed away and the family still left in Kingston will not give me any info. Thats all I have right now. I am currently waiting on my father's military record. Hope this helps, Sherri (Wood) Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: Ric <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 29, 1999 1:45 PM Subject: Re: James Gordon > Sherri, > I couldn't help but notice your maiden name (WOOD). Bill, the only bit of information I have on Archibald or Samuel and Alexander from Henry County is just that their names are on the tax list posted on the Pittsylvania County GenWeb Page. I haven't even been able to prove that the Richard Gordon who was born in Pittsylvania/Henry Co. is my gggrandfather. But according to the RW pension application of this Richard Gordon, his family moved from Henry Co., VA. to Wilkes Co., NC. sometime between his birth in Apr of 1766 and Aug 1781 when Richard volunteered for service under Capt. John Beverly and Col. Herndon and marched to Pleasant Gardens. He goes on to state that as soon as he returned home from that service his father (no name) moved to Wilkes Co., GA. This would be about Oct 1781. He doesn't mention his father again in that application except to say that his father had a record of his birth but he, Richard, didn't know what had become of it. But Richard spent two years at Walton's Fort in Franklin Co. serving as a spy or Indian scout. He rejoined the militia, marched through Sumner Co., TN to the Powell Valley of Virginia. There he met and married Susannah who appears to have been the widow or daughter of William Fork, and they moved on to Madison Co., KY. By 1800 he was in Cumberland Co., KY serving as a chain carrier on a survey crew, and in about 1811 he moved to Jackson Co., TN where he remained until his death between 1840 and 1850. Interestingly, William Fork was granted land in Sumner Co. TN in 1793 for his service as a guard on the surveying crew that shot the line between the Cumberland Settlements and Indian lands east, west, and south of Nashville. And confusingly, a William Fort was granted land in Sumner Co. and Tennessee Co. within a few days of William Fork's grant. This is where I pick up the trail of my proved g-grandfather, and the only Gordon we have found in Jackson Co. old enough to have been James C. Gordon's father is Richard. From later census records we learned that James was born 1805 in KY. By 1870, James C. and Martha J. Gordon were in Robertson Co. TN. They had five daughters living in their household and two married sons living in the neighborhood. The elder son was born in Alabama in 1831 but the family was back in Jackson Co. for the 1840 census. There were several Gordons in Madison Co., KY, including a Samuel, as early as 1791, and we find Alexander and others as early as 1796 in Robertson Co., TN. But no Archibald. If you find anything in Richard's or James's meandering where they appear to be connected to any Gordon family, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. And I do wish I could be more helpful to you. Joyce

Joyce, What information do you have on Archibald? Date of birth? There are many of us searching for information on where our Archibald came from, roughly at the same time frame. Our Archibald appears in Granville County NC sometime around the 1770s I think. Here is a bit of what we know: Approximate dob 1758 Abstracts of Granville County NC> 9236 November court, 1810 J. C. Russel to Thomas Cooke, deed for 304 acres which was part of Archibald Gordon Tract. Granville County Kinfolks, p 267 Entry in deed Book2,p377 Dennis T Paschall Bill of Sale to Howel Gordan, son of Archibald Gordon, Sr. Dec 4 1824 1830 census indicates both Archibald Gordon , Sr. and Archibald Gordon Jr. resided in Granville County. In Archibald Sr. household there resided four people- 1 male 5-10; 1 male between 10-15; 1 female between 50-60. Nov. 5, 1849 State of NC. Granville County, Willis Gordon is named executor of Archibald Gordon"s estate. Two other listed not identified. Clerk of the Court Book? page 134 Clerk of Superior Court. Settlement of Archibald Gordon"s accounts dated Dec6 1851. Administrator Willis Gordon. Following appeared on 07 February 1878 in THE CARTHAGIAN, a Moore Co., NC, newspaper. Letter from Mamie Lee Gordon Rehu, daughter of James Henry Gordon, granddaughter of Calvin Gordon.) dated 24 Sept 1930 to Rev. Gordon. Mrs. Rehu states she has a copy of an item taken from the Oxford, NC TORCHLIGHT (now in print) that states "Archie Gordon, Revolutionary soldier who has numerous descendants in the county was the father of 27 boys (one wife, Caroline Gordon - 7 of whom were born within 24 months - at the Whig convention which assembled in Raleigh in 1840 old Archie was escorted thru the streets in a four horse carriage with a flag floating over it bearing the inscription 'Archie Gordon the Whig father of 27 Whig sons'". There are MANY people searching for information on our Archibald, and it would be nice to find the step back in time. Look forward to hearing more from you. Any details you have may help to narrow the search. Henry County VA is not very far from Granville County NC. On his RW pension application, Richard Gordon stated that he was born in Henry Co., VA, on 17 Apr 1766. That was actually Pittsylvania County at that time, and Archibald, Samuel, and the Rev Alexander Gordon can all be found in that county at that time. Any one of these three may have been Richard Gordon's father, but I've been unable to locate them after they left Henry County shortly after Richard's birth year. In 1781, Richard volunteered into the militia from Wilkes Co., NC, and served under Beverly, Herndon, and McDowell, all of whom were at King's Mountain the year before, along with William Fork, who may have become Richard Gordon's father-in-law in the Powell Valley of VA in about 1786. Does anyone know of the where-abouts of Archibald, Samuel, and the Rev. Alexander Gordon after they left Henry County, VA? Were they associated with the Gordons of Wilkes Co., NC? Were they later associated with the Gordons in Robertson Co., TN? Thanks for your thoughts. Joyce
