    1. Alex. Gordon
    2. When I began researching my Gordon surnmame, the family stated that they were "Scottish". Fortunately, I worked backward from what I knew. Discovered my Gordon's were in Ireland for the Plantation in the 1600's. Yes, they had come from Scotland, but had lived centuries in Northern Ireland. When I told my father, he said, "Oh, that's right. Dad always said we were Scotch-Irish." I'm on a Scotch-Irish list, as well. It is very common for people to want to skip the "Irish" part and get to Scottish research. This may have been true for your ancestor who left the record. There were countless Gordon's in Northern Ireland. Just a thought............Sandra

    2. I have always proudly thought I was decendant of Alexander Gordon from Exeter, NH who came from Scotland in 1650. I based this belief on a family book that was handwritten with all the information that I just copied. Lately I have been thinking that the years of births, deaths, etc. don't really work out right. I think its a case of wishful thinking where someone worked from both ends to a questionable middle! Is this line in a web site somewhere that I could check against, or could someone check the Otis book for me? My last seemingly accurate entry is Jonathan Gordon died 13 March 1827 in Henniker, NH. Thanks, Sandra

    1. Hayden Gordon, died 1884 Trying Again
    2. Liz Colestock
    3. I posted this info a few months ago, maybe there is someone new to the list that may be able to help. These are notes from Sida Gordon, Hayden Gordon's grandson: Hayden Gordon was born in England, emigrated to Boston, MA, died in 1884 and was a 'sea captain'. Sida knew nothing of Hayden's wife. Their son, Arthur Hayden (A.H.) Gordon was born in Boston in August of 1841. Arthur Hayden Gordon went to Benton Co., Oregon Territory when he was a young man, probably in 1861 or 1862. He probably went by boat to either Portland or San Francisc, then on to Benton by stagecoach. Said to have been fairly well educated, literate, and clever with figures. He may have recieved some legal training, perhaps in Boston. He became the Justice of the Peace for Benton County's 5th precinct from 1864 to 1866. He died in Grangeville, Idaho Co., Idaho May 1887, where he had been postmaster for 7 years. He married (1) Amanda Stewart(d), and had five sons. Married (2) Clara Ida Garrison and had one daughter. Any information that you might have on the above would be greatly appreciated, Thank you, Liz Bremerton, WA

    2. There is was an Ed Gordon in Morrilton, AR, a lawyer who died a few years ago. His son still lives there and was in the AR Leg. He had a brother who was Lt. Gov. He was a pilot in WW II. Ed's and my line extends back into the Orange Co. NC. We are decedents of William Gordon a Rev. War soldier. William had two brothers James and John. William moved his family to Gallatin Co. IL in 1807 and then in 1815 he moved to Maury Co. TN where his brother John lived. If anyone has any info on the Orange Co NC Gordons or on William in Galatin Co. IL I would appreciate it. John B. 3. This may be of interest. I do not find this couple in "Alexander Gordon and His Descendants-A Genealogy of the Gordon Family" by Marian Otis. However, I did find this: Aaron Marden, Jr. m. 1st Charlotte Nicholas, three chn. m. 2nd Mattie Arline Royal, dau. of Allon Percy Royal, who was son of Samuel Royal. A.P. Royal said he had a maternal grandmother Gordon from near Augusta. Aaron Marden was son of Abbie Ellen Gordon and husband Aaron Marden. 1. Little crack in the brick wall today -- Carnousie Gordons
    2. Several days ago, I posted (again) my paltry little bit of information on my earliest Gordon ancestor, Jane Gordon, born about 1730 in colonial Virginia. Jane married William Starling and was the mother of William, Roderick, and Sarah Starling. I am descended from William. The old scrap of information said her father was a Doctor and her cousin was Major Gordon who was a casualty in the Battle of Quebec. I would like to publically thank Angela Mainwaring for providing the most hopeful bit of new information that I could have imagined -- this was a case for which I had literally no leads for years on where to look for more information. Per Angela's research notes from times gone by, she found in "Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America" by David Dobson, 2 separate listings for a Dr. Roderick Gordon, of Carnousie, Banffshire. Here is the second listing as she gave it to me: GORDON, DR RODERICK Son of . . . Gordon of Carnousie, Banffshire. Brother of Arthur Gordon of Carnousie. Ship's surgeon, 1727 to 1728. Settled in King and Queen County, Virginia from 1729 until 1744. (RH15-SRO) In addition to thanking Angela, I'd love to hear from anyone who recognizes this Carnousie family of Gordons and can share anything about them. Thank you very much! 3. I haven't a clue as to who John Gordon's parents or siblings were. He probably didn't come to America alone. Of course, he could have been born in Maryland. The family was on the Frederick Co., Maryland Census of 1860. One of John's daughter, Agnes, married a David Somerset Wolf of Frederick Co., Maryland in the Methodist Church there in 1853.
