Thank you Liz and Jenni In the case of my Appleby, I don't think he was ill as he joined up in the services not long after his return to England, and when he first emigrated (to Canada, not the USA) in 1913, his fare was paid by a relative, not the government. I do know that three months before he sailed back to England, a young unmarried woman with a baby returned to England - and both Appleby and this young lady gave the identical 'intended place of residence' in the UK. She was also deported! I am trying to discover if there was a connection between these two - and if it had anything to do with both being deported, but I haven't been able to discover what circumstances resulted in Deportation and whether the records relating to such decisions are accessible.
