Hi Everyone, I have membership for My Heritage which I recall I started with some nice offer via GOONS. When it comes to renew you have to be careful as there is one membership for doing stuff like you would on Ancestry and another membership for having a tree on there - which you may not need but they add on at renewal. I did the same as I do with The Times subscriptions and all subscriptions like that - which is never renew on time - let it lapse then they will usually come back and make some offer you can hardly refuse - so I have signed up once or probably twice. Both times I have managed to keep my tree on there without paying for it. The people in the call centre are nice polite Americans and one told me last time that although it was marked up 'inactive' or such like I could still use it. I never ever ring call centres so I guess they must have rung me eventually at work. To be fair the Times called our bluff last time so that was the end of that for a few months - but back they came with some daft offer for week-ends only which we now have. Getting back to My Heritage I find two issues with it that might annoy some of you - particularly those of you that have done a lot of work over the years or are very clever or indeed both. One is that the search criteria does not seem very refined - so I only use exact match mostly which is probably OK for a small study like Mutum - and then I search again using obvious variations - but if you have a large study you might find you cannot 'drill down' deep enough for your liking. The other issue is that they like sending you e mails with 'hot matches' or some equally daft expression - and having put a lot of information you have researched yourself into your tree - some of which you may have found and checked on their site - they then send e mails finding a load of stuff you just told them about! I guess you can probably stop the e mails but as I have to deal with e mails at work I find it a great pleasure to fill up my home e mail box with garbage and mass delete it occasionally. I do not recall all the costs now - but I have had subscriptions with Find My Past which changed into something else - which I got rid of - and Ancestry. With My Heritage you get the same as Ancestry World or whatever it is called now - so if like me you want to look at US stuff I find it worthwhile. Like most things it is probably worth going to the family history equivalent of 'Go Compare' and deciding what is the best product and best value for what you want to do. Ive had a little prowl around there, and wasnt over-impressed with what I found - a lot of the same dodgy, unreferenced stuff that Ive seen before on other sites. I have had My Heritage for several years now - I did make use of the free offer that came through the GUild but discovered that it had taken over the old Gencircles site and already had a very old tree of mine through that. Although I have gotten some useful contacts and I love their charting program, I'm thinking of dropping my subscription. I like to work on my computer and load a revised gedcom to update a tree. However , unlike other sites, My Heritage ADDS the new gedcom - not overwriting the old. Their suggestion is to just make a new tree. This leads to identical smart matches showing up for your tree that are really just some one else's version 1, ver. 2, ver.3, etc. If you have a couple 'famous names this can become very burdensome. I did acquire their FTB program and will keep that for the charting but when I want to use it I have to turn my wifi, as it is very insistent about syncing with the online tree - and I certainly don't want it doing that when I am working with a custom gedcom for a contact. In short, it nags when I'm on wifi and show it any attention and then gives me thousands (literally) of useless matches because of the numerous versions of the same tree. It has become more trouble than it is worth to me at this point. Marie (GOONS 5318) Bringing the world together one surname at a time.
