Hi, I have a tiny family of HartNells - will you also be including them as I guess there could be some cross over due to poor transcription writing. If I were now starting from scratch I would probably investigate one British census (1851 or 1881) and one from each of the other countries that have censuses available to get an over-view of where there were large groupings of the surname. At the same time collecting 'variations' so you don't have to start again later. I started with my maiden surname of Gullick and very quickly added Gullock/e, but it was quite a number of years before I realized I should also include Gollick and the very rare Gallick.
