Yes Brian they have been registered since 1927 but it was a separate register from the live births. I'm doing some research for a cousin into someone who was born in 1964 in Kensington and the family story is that he was a twin and the other twin died in childbirth. I've found his GRO birth entry but not the twin's. I believe it is mandatory nowadays to register still births but can anyone tell me if it was the same in 1964 ?? Many thanks Brian
Can I also ask a question on this subject? My husband's great grandmother had 11 children in the 1870/80s. They were all registered. However, present day cousins maintain there were also twins who died either at birth or very soon after. I have not found birth or death entries for them. Am I right then in assuming there was no requirement to register such events at that time? Hi Christine As Janet wrote in reply to the original query Stillbirths have only been registered since 1927. Before that as there was no "birth" and no "death" they were not registered in anyway. BUT their burial is often noted in the local cemetery, as "Stillborn child of......". I have managed to fill in some gaps from those entries, but only where there is one family of the surname in an area. When there are multiple families giving birth over the same period it becomes a little more difficult. For still births since 1927 the next of kin can apply to the GRO for a copy of the register entry. These have never been kept locally the details were always sent direct to the GRO who maintain the register. Thanks for this info. It seems I may have to rethink (or consider buying more certificates)the evidence for the twins of my great aunt being still born. I have her death certificate which shows she died 23rd March 1914 from eclampsia. The twins births and deaths are registered for the March quarter of 1914. Considering the lack of success in treating eclapmsia at that time, I assumed the twins (& especially as they were twins)had died at birth at the same time as their mother. Before I do get the certificates, perhaps, Chris doing the Broomfield ONS may have them as she was born Broomfield.
