I have three instances where stillborn births were registered. Two in 1852 and one in 1858. There were registered as "male Codgbrook" two instances, and "female Codgbrook" once. All three are registered as deaths. Perhaps the Northampton Registrar was unaware of the rules or just covering all eventualities? Festive greetings to all Goons! Hi Derek I checked FreeBMD and the two deaths in 1852 are also registered as births in the same quarter, and are likely to have been twins. They would not have been still births, but children who were born and died, maybe even within monutes of their birth, but certainly did live for a short time. Interestingly the only "male" I can find in 1858 is a birth....even checking without a surname does not bring up a variant death. Note that in some cases the births appear in the quarter after the deaths have been registered - at the time I guess the death and burial were uppermost in the minds of everyone concerned, and perhaps it was only pointed out to them that they had to register the birth at a later date. I have come across many such births registered after the deaths when we were indexing the registers here, although not many of them actually fell into the next quarter. With the stillborn children I have found in burial registers I have yet to find anything for them in a GRO index of either births or deaths. Many could have course been premature births anyway - some of the born/died ones were noted with the cause of death "premature birth". Not all male/female births went on to die as infants - you may well find that if you order the birth certificate it will have a forename(s) addition in thelast column - some people would not use a name until after formal baptism/christening so the last column allowed for the addition of the forename(s) after baptism and within 12 months of the birth, but this does not get added to the GRO index.
