    3. Steve, I quite agree with your assessment of the profile page formatting. Such an expanded page and its text It is not conducive to normal site reading as with a customary view. I'm wondering if adjustments can be made within the new program. Currently, when I go to "edit your profile" it takes me to a page showing "ERROR 404 - not found." This may be just a technical glitch. Lee Ramsey 6291 Hi all Just noticed the changes to the formatting of the profile pages. I give them a resounding "thumbs down". Firstly, the text is interspersed with this sort of gobbledygook stuff (don't know whether it'll come through in Plain Text, Wendy): “Hemede’s Hill”, Secondly, the lines of text stretch inordinately long across the page - a well-known deterrent to fast reading. What was wrong with the old format? It wasn't broke, so why "fix" it? (BUt then I am a known dinosaur, who has said the same about Office 2007, Windows 8.1 etc. Steve Tanner :-( _____________________________________________ RootsWeb lists - surnames, regions, software, etc http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to GOONS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Paul, I did read the instructions during the initial website changeover, and I attempted various times to change my password, seemingly without success, as I could not access the site after multiple tries. The password I used today worked, and I got to the new page. Is this the correct route: member's page - maintain home page - login - edit your profile? I presume that most everyone is aware of the over expanded profile page and the problems with some of the text. Is this going to be the permanent page view? Lee Ramsey Presume you read the Web masters instructions about changing your password? 3. Hi Everyone, I have just found something rather strange. There is an entry for Grayce M Gummerson in the California Death Index for 11 July 1967. The Ancestry version says she was born in Michigan but the FamilySearch version has birthplace as Minnesota. All other details are the same. Census returns etc agree with the FamilySearch version of Minnesota. Has anyone else come across this, presumably the records were indexed separately by Ancestry and FamilySearch? I just wonder if other instances of Michigan in the Ancestry version might be Minnesota instead. Debbie Gomersall Member 808 Gomersall - Gummerson

    3. Abbreviations for the different states weren't really standardized into 2 letter codes until the 1960s and 70s when computers would only allow 2 spaces on the punchcard. Prior to that 2, 3 and even 4 letter abbreviations were used ( Iknow in the 50s, I was taught in school to use 3 letters) - One really notable recording/transcription problem was on an pre-1900 census - the state was Indiana but the actual census taker decided to abbreviate it as Ia with a lower case 'a' this has been read by transcribers as both Iowa and Idaho neither of which were states at the time. "Mi' could have been Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi or even Missouri. Marie (GOONS 5318) Bringing the world together one surname at a time. 3. This was probably a transcription/data entry error by a volunteer for Ancestry. A majority of the data entries are made by volunteers who work towards payment in the form of subscriptions to Ancestry. I have found numerous errors, as many of these individuals simply do not have the skills to be doing the job - especially when it comes to handwritten records. Consider it a mistake. I see things like this all of the time. Unfortunately, Ancestry does not host the original record so you cannot easily double check it. 3. Wouldn’t it be better if people who have an issue with the website, drop a private note to the Webmaster, rather than exercise their frustrations on the forum. The Webmaster is the only person who can deal with problems like this so it is somewhat counter-productive, and imho, a little discourteous, to air them here Nick Nick Serpell nick@serpell.org > On 30 Oct 2014, at 14:19, W Paul Featherstone via <goons@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Presume you read the Web masters instructions about changing your password? > > Paul > 2627 > Featherstone's Worldwide > On 30/10/2014 14:12, Lee Ramsey via wrote: >> Steve, >> >> I quite agree with your assessment of the profile page formatting.
