Hi One-Namers Everywhere I thought members may be interested in one of my recent finds on FMP's release of the 1939 Register, I Have been working through it county by county currently in Kent. >From the index: Catherine S LAWS 1905 Maidstone RD Kent >From the transcription: LAWS Household No 3 Tent, The Bridge, East Farleigh KENT FIRST NAME SURNAME DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS SCHEDULE Sub NUMBER Catherine S LAWS 18 Sep 1905 Female Unpaid Domestic Married 140 1 I decided this was a trifle odd so went onto Google Earth & took a look at East Farleigh. If you don't know, it's a very pretty crossing point of the River Medway, but there is no obvious camping spot. So I put on my thinking cap and pondered the scene, and decided to look up the local history society who didn't answer when I telephone the secretary. I next looked at the parish council, I rang the Chairman who lives in Maidstone, (Always start at the top of any organisation to get the best results) most helpful chap involved with someone writing a history of the village and he identified a row of tiny huts, I think about 16 at present may have been considerable more in 1939 which were hop pickers huts (Tents) apparently they are listed buildings but much negleted. Considering that the 1939 Register was taken 29 September, it was right in the middle of the Hop-picking season, when masses working clas Londoners decamped to Kent for the work and fresh air. If one continues on the road another half mile one comes across a magnificant converted Oasthouses, an integral part of the Kentish agricultural landscape. As to Catherine S LAWS born 18 Sep 1905 I went to my database and out jumped one Catherine Stoker LAWS, but it couldn't be her as although she lived in Dartford KENT, she was born 23 May 1905 and had married 1936 to one William Turnbull JOHNSTON who was alive until 1968. So Who was Catherine S aged 34 married to a Mr.Laws and where had she come from? And as far as my ONS is concerned Who was her Mr LAWS? Hi John, There is a Catherine Laws, Death registered June 2003 in Croydon, DOB given as 18/9/1905. Regarding Marriage, most likely one I can see is Frederick C Laws who marries a Catherine Howard in Southwark in 1930. Might be worth continuing the background research on hop pickers - I believe a lot of families from greater London did decamp to Kent for the hop picking season, so this Croydon Catherine Laws could well be the right one. Lovely detective work. It also reminded me of an interesting address for one of my 1939 Pullums-to-be. Florence Maud Brown (don't think she is related twice) b 2nd Feb 1915 in the 1939 register is a waitress cleaner at Bank Of England Camp Hut C 2 , Kingsclere and Whitchurch, Hampshire which I think could be related to "Plan zero": http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35370494 She went on to marry Frederick Reovers PULLUM in Edmonton in 1944 -- Nikki Brown #6552 Pullum ONS https://pullumons.wordpress.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "John P Laws via" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, 17 March, 2016 11:16:06 AM Subject: [G] 1939 Register Hi One-Namers Everywhere I thought members may be interested in one of my recent finds on FMP's release of the 1939 Register, I Have been working through it county by county currently in Kent.
