Subjects were alive in the 1300s and 1400s up to the twentieth century. There is a splendid variety of occupations, including tattoo artist, merchant and pirate, and academic hostess. For some there are also portraits. Many UK counties give access to the Oxford DNB through researchers' library cards. Wendy
