The Wells family originated in Scarborough but I've not had much success in discovering anything about them :<( Think you finding Hannah in a directory as a widow would be unlikely, unless she was well off, perhaps owned a farm or reasonable sized house, ran her own business. Do you know what kind of mariner Thomas Owston was, if he was in the Navy or a merchant seaman, fisherman, that you could look at more specific records for his death. Have you tried local newspapers using just his surname in case he was listed as one crew-member amongst others. Have you looked for a marriage of the last child/ren to see the name given for the father? Could Hannah have applied for local financial help when his ship was presumed lost? When looking through the B.T.'s for Scarborough I noticed there were many burial entries for men and boys drowned with no names and merely guesses as to their ages. From Merryl Wells of Luton, Beds.
