Hi Valerie British army history of that period is complex. The records are at The National Archives, Kew. It might be cost effective to engage the servies of an expert to search the army records for this man, if you have not already done so. TNA maintains a list of independent researchers. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/paying-for-research/independent-researchers/ There is a drop-down menu from which you can select "Army - Genealogy and Biography”. I have done this in the past. It is not particularly cheap but is certainly cheaper than going to Kew yourself unless you live close by.
