I’m hoping that someone here can see a way to solve my puzzle.....this man has bugged me ever since the 1881 census became available. Eli LYWARD appears in the 1881 census & I cannot get a handle on him or his origins. There’s not much to go on.....his age is recorded as 81, Unm, Boarder, No occupation & No Place of birth. He was living in an area (Mitcham parish, Croydon registration district) where 40% of all LYWARD civil registrations were recorded, so I don’t think I should dismiss him as an blip. I can’t find him prior or subsequently. There seems to be no connection to the SPICERs with whom he’s living. Even if his surname is recorded incorrectly, you’d think his death registration would be apparent - but I can’t spot it! It would be great to sort this out once and for all! best Anne H. 1020 LYFORD
Hi Anne, (to tidy up for the forum): A search on Ancestry.co.uk reveals criminal records from Hampshire for an Elijah LIVERD/LIVARD in 1840-45, born around 1801 or 1805. This might fit with an Elijah LYFORD baptised at Swallowfield, Berks in 1805, living at Yateley, Hants in 1841. Could this be the same man?
