    3. Google alerts, I have them set up for all my main variants. I use it to put interesting stuff on my Featherstone Society Facebook page, I get a lot of stuff about Featherstone Rovers( Rugby League team), and anything that happens in Featherstone in the West Riding of Gods country, and any problems in Featherstone prison in Staffordshire. There are a few other other things I get regularly, but after a while you just ignore and a quick scan down the alerts I can pick out the unusual. I also use a mapping web site https://uencounter.me/ and plot Streets and Road named after my names, I get quite a few house sales containing road names. It can usually find names in Australia, USA and Canada, however it's not so good at locating streets in the UK. It also seems to pick up Obits that the Legacy site misses. I started to use Evernote at the beginning of the year and I just clip the obit page straight to my obits folder, I have 166 this year to date. Not that I have time to do anything about them but they are part of my study. Anything from News watch goes into the same folder. forwarded by E mail. 3. I have a search with Legacy.com and they frequently send me links to obits. But you can't expect them to include the kind of local papers that Newswatch deals with. I've just had a newspaper article from Newswatch about one of my names that I would never have got from one of the news archive services. I would say I was delighted to get it but it was very sad so I can't say that - but all you researchers will know what I mean. 3. I'm definitely getting lots of really good obit information (includes family names, dates and place of birth, etc) from Legacy Obits. I also signed up to Legacy Obits Messenger, though have some problems with the links - easy enough to then google the name and find the obit though. I'm now just going through the older obits and its helping match up families in US and Canada. While we are on message services, I'm not sure if everyone has come across google alerts - not much good if you have a very common name or the surname is also a place name (though I think you can do some advanced filtering), but can be quite useful for picking up news stories (and obits) related to your surname. These are reduced far more, so that it is a job to read the names of the places!" Polly I agreed until I finally got around to downloading one of these original maps. I was then able to open it in Preview on my Mac and the resolution is quite good! I can read almost all the lot numbers and placenames. Much better than what you see online. Martha Bowes Guild #5048

    3. I am involved in Adult Education and I find it interesting to use my experiences to suggest name variants. What interested me was how often vowel sounds got confused. I never expected it. Scotland's People has a free search which enables you to check for variations. I prefer to find my own using it rather than depend on the search options they built in. The th sound presents problems to clerks and learners, and I am interested in checking out fortons to see if they match into more conventional Thornton families. -----Original Message----- From: Fíona Tipplevia Sent: Sunday, November 23, 2014 6:14 PM To: Debbie Kennett ; goons@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [G] Puzzled?
