    1. [G] Help with photo please
    2. Tony Harris via
    3. I am intending to write an article for JOONS and I would like to include a photograph of a house in Upper Hale, Farnham, Surrey in the article. I do have a photo taken from Google Street View but there are difficulties in publishing a picture from that source. Is there a GOON living close to Upper Hale who would be prepared to take a digital photograph for me of the house for me? Full credit to the photographer will of course be given in the article. 3. Like June, I am usually fairly good at transcribing wills, though have not done any Scottish to date or many that old. However, I do live in Scotland, understand quite a bit of (current) legal property-related terminology that can be quite different in Scotland to the rest of the UK, and have a few local historian friends I could call on to clarify if necessary. So, I'd be happy to take a look for you. Might be worth you getting a couple of different folk to have a go and compare results. 3. Julie, I had hoped to combine a visit to the Walsall Local History Centre with WDYTYA, and would have been delighted to help out on the Guild Stand. Unfortunately, however, the LHC can’t guarantee its opening hours that week (and apparently has also mislaid some of the material I’m interested in!), so I have had to cancel my plans to travel. 2. Marie Byatt via
    3. Hi all - I just loaded another 3- 400 German marriages to the Worldwide marriage Index. This is what the index is for - all those marriages that are outside of the British GRO indexes. I'm sure every study has at least a few if not hundreds - so let's have them and really start showing how worldwide we are. ( especially since they now show up on the site search). Remember - we can handle any kind of spreadsheet/field separated data as well as gedcoms. However only data with both names, year and country at minimum will be listed - the rest is pruned. Nor do we expect you to separate out the GRO marriages first. England afterall is part of the world. We realize that some people keep all their marriages together as a set. Really looking forward to a marriage from Antarctica or maybe the Falkland Islands? Easter Island? Mongolia? Marie (GOONS 5318) Bringing the world together one surname at a time. 3. This year Who Do You Think You Are? Live will be at the NEC in Birmingham from Thursday 16th - Saturday 18th April. Once again the Guild will be in attendance. This is a very popular event and last year we very successfully promoted the Guild and surnames in general. This was only possible with the help and support from happy and helpful members and volunteers. The Guild will be issued with some exhibitor passes and we will be able to offer a limited number of free admittances to the event to Guild members who are able to commit to 4 hours volunteering on the Guild Stand leaving the rest of the day free to visit other stands, or attend workshops etc. If you are attending and already have your admittance ticket and can offer even an hour or two on the Thursday, Friday, or Saturday it would be very much appreciated. This email is to assess the initial support; hopefully we will have enough passes to go around for everyone who wants to help and attend and will try our very best to accommodate everyone's wishes, wherever possible. If you would like to help represent the Guild at WDYTYA and meet up with other members and the public please send me an email (stand-manager@one-name.org) providing your name, membership number with the day(s) & time(s) you can offer. 3. Hello Nicholas, Regarding question 2: Occasionally you find that passenger arrivals and departures are reported in newspapers in Australia. This is generally as a shipping intelligence column but occasionally in the more general news. Perhaps this might be the same for India? Checking newspapers might be worth doing if you haven't done so already. I'm guessing there must have been an Indian newspaper published in English. Best wishes Edwina Shooter The DATE Tree with GOONS 5674 Mount Helena, Western Australia -----Original Message----- From: goons-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:goons-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nicholas Spence via Sent: Thursday, 29 January 2015 6:16 AM To: goons@rootsweb.com Subject: [G] Passage to India I wonder if any body can help? I am trying to find the marriage in about 1777-1778 of Charlotte Peche (1758-1833) to George Smith (c.1744-1808) George Smith was a merchant and in the late 1770s was operating mainly in Macao and China. His eldest known child was born in Macao on 23 June 1779 and as I have failed to find a marriage in Britain, I think it quite likely that George and Charlotte married in the Far East. If so what took Charlotte out there and when?. The family already had connections in India. One of Charlotte's older brothers, James Peche, a young cadet in the East India Company's infantry, had sailed to India on the 'Latham' which left Britain on 10 April 1776. The ship called at Bombay and then went on to Bengal where James disembarked in September 1776. His elder brother, John Peche, also in the HEIC army had been stationed in Bombay for some years by then. He had married in Bombay in March 1773 and by 1780 had had at least 5 children One possible scenario is that Charlotte sailed on the same ship as her brother James and left the ship in Bombay in order to be a mother's help of some sort to her elder brother John while she was looking for a suitable husband. My questions. 1. Would the log of the 'Latham' assuming it still exists have a list of passengers? 2. Alternatively was there any publication which reported passengers arriving and departing from India as early as the 1770s? 3. As I can't find a marriage for George and Charlotte in Bombay, would they have been able to have an Anglican marriage in Macao, and if so would there be any record of such a marriage?
