When Chris Gray put his question on the Epsom, Ewell, Cheam Memories, Family History and Genealogy Facebook site, I responded to his query by suggesting that the writer make contact with his 'namesake' who is a member of the Guild.... But he was one and the same... So I felt a bit silly... There are three main Facebook groups started by Terry Gale and friends at the end of November 2015. They are : Kingston, Surbiton, Tolworth... Esher, Claygate and the Dittons plus Epsom, Ewell, Cheam etc. All are closed groups, with high standards of contribution and comment. On May 12th I had been booked by a local Surbiton group to give a local history talk, which I based on extracts from the newspaper archive on FMP. Eight or so of the Kingston based Facebook group attended, above and beyond those who normally attend the meeting. There has been a call for a Local History walk of the area and a date has been suggested. At present some genealogical work is taking place, supported by photographs, a marriage certificate and memories. Personally I have been in collaboration,on line, with a distant cousin regarding a local property in Surbiton. This property is in the same road as one in which Mary Georgiana Heskins Green resided in 1928, which brings me back to Chris Gray's problem with the name, ROWE. I have absolutely no idea as to how Mary Georgina etc gained the name 'HESKINS'. She was born in India but has no connection with any of the known HESKINS families. So how she gained the name is a total mystery...There must be a connection somewhere. The only possibility that I can think of is that Mary's family was in contact with Francis Heskins WINTERBOTHAM, who had been given his second name in honour of a family friend. This young man was in India as a soldier, but died in one of the Afghan Wars. I need to check the dates... I know that people are rather sniffy about Facebook but the groups I have mentioned are well run and have an academic approach in dealing with valid research. Janet HESKINS [2281]
Perhaps a sibling married a Rowe who became his God-father. Have you looked at censuses to see if there were Rowes living nearby, someone met in the Army/Navy who was admired. I have been trying to trace back families who have used Bawtree as a 'first' name. It usually pops up quite quickly as mother or grandmother maiden name but in one instance I've gone through four different surnamed families to arrive at a possible connection back in 1730's. Christopher, In my husband's family his grandmother and her siblings had a number of interesting 2nd or 3rd names which turned out to be the surnames of family friends - not relations. Good evening, I have recently joined a Facebook site which is covering the area of Cheam, Epsom and Ewell (Surrey, England) - its Memories, Local History and Genealogy. My mother's father lived in the area and I was comfortable with my knowledge of him. He was Abiezer Wreford Rowe Kelly - born on 9th March 1896 in Lewisham (London). He married my Grandmother on 11th October 1922, but they divorced and he married Doris May Biden (Registered Surrey ME, Mar 1950). So far so good. All was well until someone on the Facebook site pointed out that xxx. Ummm. I understood that Doris had been the Lady Captain of the Epsom Golf Club but had found no confirmation. Someone else on the Facebook site identified a record which showed her as D.M. Rowe-Kelly. So I decided to look further. Going back to his name - the birth certificate says "Birth of Abiezer Wreford Kelly - son of Philip Fulford Kelly (Master Coach Builder) and Mary Tracey Kelly formerly Lake". I have both the Kelly and Lake families going way back - no mention of Rowe. His death certificate says death of "Abiezer Wreford Rowe Kelly on 6th January 1986, born 9th March 1896 in Devon ..." I had previously identified the marriage in FreeBMD - Marriage of Abiezer W R Kelly and Doris M Biden, Surrey Mid E 5g 418, Mar 1950 - with a duplicate entry showing her surname as Pym - indicating that she had two surnames. Sure enough, I had found her previous marriage - Marriage of Wilfred C Pym and Doris M Biden, Epsom 2a 33, Sep 1919. No mention of Rowe other than the initial R. My Mother's birth certificate says "Birth of Mary ... Kelly - daughter of Abiezer Wreford Rowe Kelly (Civil Servant - Post Office Engineering department) and Jane Esther Kelly formerly Lockyer." So Rowe has appeared - but from where? [I have not obtained her brother's birth certificate.] His entry on the WW1 medal roll was in the name of "KELLY Wreford" - though I am not 100% sure I have the right person - though do know he was in the Royal Field Artillery (photographs of him in his uniform). I can't find his service record. So - no help on those names. Doris' death is registered - Doris May Rowe Kelly, born 25 Dec 1899, Gipping and Hartismere 10 2577, Apr 1990. She is buried with my grandfather. The "find a grave" entry shows her as Doris May Kelly, born 25 Dec 1899 in Redruth (Cornwall), died 13 Apr 1990 in Old Newton (Suffolk) and spouse Abiezer Wreford R Kelly (1896-1986). So - where does the Rowe come from? Any ideas people? By the way - what I have found to date is on my web-site (http://www.gray-ons.org/secondsite/g0/p37.htm). By the way - there was a Doris May Rowe born in Cornwall in 1899, but she married a Percival G Allen in Highland Park, Wayne, Michigan, USA and so I have placed her on the back burner - being comfortable on the Biden.

After a few (self-created!) technical glitches booking is now open for the DNA seminar at Ullenwood near Cheltenham. This is the kind of thing that would be VERY useful in the Guild wiki. Or even in the Guild Web Forum where we can all easily find it again. I thought members might find this of interest now the FMP Westminster Collection project is complete. I asked the FMP support team if they had a listing of the parishes and date ranges of the parishes included in their Westminster Collection. I also asked if their Westminster Collection included all the parishes in the City of Westminster. They replied that they do not have a list of all parishes and date ranges for each parish and each record for the Westminster Collection and that this collection is not a complete list of all Parish records available for Westminster. I did manage to locate on their website a list of parishes available by browsing their filter when viewing baptisms, marriages and burials in the Westminster Collection and cross referenced these to the online list of holdings in the City of Westminster Archive. This produced the following list of parishes and date ranges for the FMP Westminster Collection. I wonder if anyone else has tried to do the same?
