    3. I dont know Chelmsford all that well even though my parents dont live far from it now, but there is a pool next to the river Chelmer (Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre). There was a lido that shut a couple of years ago. Not sure how long it was there. Forum, Anyone know Chelmsford Essex? I have some old film of my great aunt in the early 1930s. She was born in Chelmsford R.D. in 1931 and the film shows her and her brother in a pool just off a river. In the background is a church. This is the problem, I looked at Essex churches and it has the resemblance of St James the Great, Colchester. Was there a lido (not fancy) on the banks of the River Colne in Colchester or am I barking up the wrong tree. I have a photo clipped from the film to send to anyone who may be able to assist. 3. May I remind those of you with links to Oxfordshire that OXSIL (The Oxfordshire Surname Interests List) is a free resource available at www.oxsil.org.uk? From the front page you can search on your surname and find a list of the OXSIL users that are researching that name. In many cases, a particular period and place within Oxfordshire are specified. If one of these names is relevant, OXSIL can pass a message to the researcher concerned. In addition, a link from the front page will take you to a form for adding your name of interest to the OXSIL database. OXSIL is entirely volunteer run - and, as it happens, everyone involved in the work is a member of GOONS. Bill Seary Co-Administrator of OXSIL query@oxsil.org.uk bill-seary@one-name.org

I would be very grateful if anyone planning to visit one of the six libraries holding the post 2005 BMD Fiche sets [Birmingham, Bridgend, Westminster, Newcastle, Plymouth, Brit Lib - but NOT Manchester] Could kindly look up the partner of one of my ADSHEAD marriages please. I have done this successfully for all GRO records for every year up to 2014 but I have a small problem with one 2011 Marriage :- The partner occurs on the very first Fiche in the set and this particular Fiche Card in Manchester has been missing for nearly three years now and although I reported it, the librarians do not appear to be able or motivated to replace it. The surname in question is relatively rare so it should not take much time locating the missing partner. I would be very grateful for spot of help here. 3. Over the past few days I have been corresponding with Guild member Rosie Rowley (Spridgeon ONS). She mentioned that she is heavily involved with a project of the above name, dedicated to the people of Macclesfield in Cheshire and how their lives were affected by World War One. I took a quick look at the website (http://macclesfieldreflects.org.uk/) and if I might summarize, it's an excellent example of what a relatively small town can achieve for such a commemorative project. Two aspects might be of particular interest to Guild members: - there is a list of those who died including quite a few Guild registered names under study. So do take a look for your name(s) and see what you can find. - Rosie is interested in hearing from Guild members with people with a Macclesfield and WW1 connection. In particular, right now their project's focus is on commemorating several hundred people who died, both at home and away. If you can help with any information about that, please do contact her at macclesfieldreflects@gmail.com. Any information about those who survived would also be appreciated though is less urgent. Rosie adds that if you have a person who did not die you might consider creating a community at livesofthefirstworldwar.org and uploading their story there. She notes that no fewer than 43 Guild members have created "communities" at that site (hint: search for "one-name" and you will find them). I'd only add that the Guild has its own commemorative site at http://ww1.one-name.org/ where any member can post any story about anyone affected by the war from anywhere in the world, not just the UK. US members will know that we are approaching the centenary of their entry into the conflict. So this might be an apt time to contribute. Hope this helps someone. People there really did think about money and the future, and industrial and provident societies, building societies and the more informal savings clubs were a way to ensure the future of your family. It doesn't seem a big leap to me that along with that, people would make wills to formalise their wishes, and nominate beneficiaries for their savings.
