    3. It seems that Benjamin GOODEY was born in Reading in 1838 and that you can find who his father was from his birth certificate. Hephzibar FISHER is more problematical, though the 1881 Census indicates she was also born in Reading in 1839 or 1840. Perhaps the 1841 - 1861 censuses would show what happened to Henrietta (below). >From the 1881 Census it appears that Benjamin and Hephzibar had 3 sons. 3. I am researching the history of my father Stanley George Goodey's family. He was born on 14th December 1916. His parents were George Goodey and Ada Phillips and he was born at 22 Harwood Road in Fulham, London, England. At the time of my father's marriage his father George Goodey's occupation is given as Shop Manager, at the time of his birth in 1916 his fathers occupation is given as Motor Driver. My fathers parents were married George Goodey and Ada Phillips were married on 22nd March 1914 at St. Andrew's Church in Islington. He was a Motor Bus Driver at the time and that they gave the same address at the time of the marriage which was 31 Huntingdon Street in Islington and the same age 22. This marriage certificate also indicates that George's father John Goodey was deceased and that Ada's father was Henry Phillips a Kitchen Porter. The witnesses to the marriage are recorded as Henry Phillips (presumably Ada's Father, but could have been a brother or uncle) and Louisa Goodey (presumably George's mother but could have been a sibling or aunty). I have recently regained contact with my father after a 50 year gap caused by the divorce of my parents. My father is nearly 90 and his memory is failing a little. My father has told me that he was the oldest of several children but could not remember the number or any names of his siblings. He said that he lost touch with his brothers and sisters when he left home, when he joined No. 600 Squadron of the RAF in 1935. Before this he says he lived with his family in Kings Cross. He says that his mother had lots of sisters whom they used to visit at Christmas but could not recall names or where they visited. He can not remember the name of the street he lived in but said he lived next to a 'pie and eels' shop. He says that he lived over a shop called 'Simmonds Dining Rooms'. I am a bit confused as to whether the 'pie and eels' a shop and 'Simmonds Dining Rooms' were one and the same. My father says that the family running or owning the 'pie and ells' shop and my father's family were close and he thought that they might have been relatives of his mother. My father also said that his mother worked for a family called Webb - I think in the 'pie and eels' shop. Any help to assist me go further back in my researches would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks Richard.

    3. Richard... The first piece of advice I would offer is to not get too, too bogged down with age discrepancies... (Nor the spelling of names...) Ages will vary from year to year from document to document... A good rule of thumb to follow as you do your research is to accept an approximate age, as it may be the only only source that you may be able to obtain. As I'm researching my Goody/Goodey line, my gggg grandfather Joseph Goody on the 1841 Census in Halstead is listed at 60 years. On the 1851 Census in Halstead, which was 10 years later, he is listed at 75 years... so he aged an extra 5 years in the 10 year period... Just don't get too worried in trying to match ages... Another rule of thumb - collect a number of corresponding documents for any one ancestor... as Birth, Baptism, Marriage, Death Certificates and Registrations, and Censuses... Usually the best support for a birth date of all these would be a Birth Certificate... it would be the one document that was produced closest to the actual event... 3. I am researching the history of my father Stanley George Goodey's family. So far I have obtained a birth certificate for him and discovered that he was born on 14th December 1916. According to the birth certificate his parents were George Goodey and Ada Phillips and he was born at 22 Harwood Road in Fulham, London, England. This is contrary to his marriage certificate, which stated he was 35 at the time of his marriage to my mother Elizabeth Edith May Garrett on 9th December 1950, would have made him 33 and not 35 given his date of birth. Despite the discrepancy in the age on the marriage certificate I am pretty sure that I have the correct Birth Certificate as his Marriage certificate indicates that his father was George Goodey and the address my father gave as his at the time of his marriage was 53A Fulham High Street, London, England. At the time of my father's marriage his father George Goodey's occupation is given as Shop Manager, at the time of his birth in 1916 his fathers occupation is given as Motor Driver. I have also obtained a Marriage certificate for which I believe are my father's parents and discovered that George Goodey and Ada Phillips were married on 22nd March 1914 at St. The witnesses to the marriage are recorded as Henry Phillips (presumably Ada's father) and Louisa Goodey (presumably George's mother). I have searched the Free BMD and Family relatives.org websites and can only find one John Goodey, married to a Louisa James in 1877. Searching these 2 sites for the birth of George Goodey in and around 1892 I found 3 births recorded but for Ada Phillips many recorded births in and around 1892. I don't know when George Goodey or his wife Ada died, but I do know that George Goodey was alive in 1950 when my father was married and presumably in 1951 when I was born. I believe my father was the first child born to George Goodey and Ada Phillips. Any help to assist me go further back in my researches would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks Richard.
