    1. [GOLDSTONE-ENGLAND] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [GOLDSTONE-ENGLAND] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    3. Hello Lisa, How nice to hear from another Gouldston family. My family of Goldstones/Goldstone/Gouldstone...don't you just love the variants..my first knowledge of this line is picked up in South <Molton Devon with Robert Goldston, born ca 1600 and his wife Katherine Bourchier, they had five children according to the parish records and wills, their son Robert married in Bristol Somerset and had one son Bourchier. Robert, wife and son went to Barbadoes when son Bourchier was about five, father Robert died there and the wife and son returned to Bristol where learning of his grandmothers death he entered into a long court fight with his aunt to secure his inheritance, whick he finally received. Bourchier went to Wrington, a farm area in the Tything and became a farmer, eventually his sons joined him in the farming. Bourchier had a son named Robert Gouldstone and this is my connection to the line. Several years ago some of my line were fortunate to come into some great information that had been researched by John Gouldstone for a book he was writing, what a great find. He covers in depth the families of Chew Magna where the line starts, the ones that went to Wrington, Burrington and Churchill, also families that went to Long Ashton and Saltford, all in Somerset... Would love to share the early history that you might have, this is a most interesting family. The records I have go back to Roger Golston born 1480 or 90, he died 1549 and left a will. He was in Chew Magna.. Rae in USA :)____________________________:) /_____Rae Edwards_____/

    1. Kezia Goldstone?
    2. I have located a christening record for Kezia Goldstone 25 March 1838 St John Baptist, Leytonstone, Essex UK on the Family search IGI. It identifies the Mother as Ann Hester Plumb and the Father as James Goldstone who was my Great,Great Great Great Grandfather. The information has been entered by a member of the LDS church and I am unable to identify this person. I have not been able to identify any further record of Kezia other than on the UK census' which does not allow me to go any further until I obtain a birth date for Kezia and or more information on James Goldstone. A long shot I know but obviously somebody has research which involves this family any assistance would be appreciated. Tom

    2. Thank you for explaining about the shires and why we shouldn't use abbreviated counties, Im sorry I do tend to abbreviate too. The reason you didn't see Stephanie's original message is because like many on the list they send the messages to me. It does feel like you are sending a message out in the blue, that no one is there on the list. It appears like most if not all subscribers prefer to read messages more than to send them and when all subs prefer that, there is no list. I try to be the one that answers questions because I seem to have a large tree of Goldstone family and don't research this family currently much. I don't see any questions so I wonder if maybe the subs don't have any and maybe we don't need this list. If anyone would like to adopt the list I will gladly pass this on to someone else who may enjoy this, or who has ideas for it. Best Wishes Eve

    3. Hello, Yes it is very quiet; I didn't even get Stephanie's original message to which "VIRFM" replied (unless it is a very "late" reply, and I have forgotten the original :-) Just one general point about the transcription of the 1881 Census, which list members, especially those outside the UK, may not be aware of, and could lead to confusion: Most of the county names ending with "shire" are truncated in the transcription, by removing the "shire". The problem with doing that is that what is left is the name of a town or city. So Gloucestershire appears as Gloucester, Yorkshire as York, Derbyshire as Derby, ands so on. The entry in the reply below makes it look as if Bristol (a city) is part of Gloucester (another city), and that Almondbury (a town) is part of York (a city). In fact Bristol is over 30 miles from Gloucester, and Almondbury about 35 miles from York. The strange thing is that those county names like Lancashire, Cheshire and Berkshire, which do end with "shire", but don't leave the name of a town or city when the "shire" is removed, are given in full, as are those county names like Middlesex and Suffolk, which don't end with "shire". My own GOLDSTONE interest is the descendants and ancestors of David GOLDSTONE (my 2nd great grandfather), born Witham, Essex, about 1825, died 16 May 1889, Colchester, Essex. 1. My GOLDSTONE interests [was: Re GOLDSTONE]
    2. David Lamb
    3. Hello, Thank you, Eve, for prodding me into remembering that having joined this list, I don't think I have ever stated my particular interests on it. Mine came from Essex. My 2nd great grandfather, David GOLDSTONE, was born in Witham (pronounced "Witt'm"), about 1825. He later moved to Colchester, where he worked as an ostler to a brewer. He married Ann WILLSHER, but I haven't been able to trace the details. Their first child was my great grandmother, Emily Mary Burton GOLDSTONE, who was born in 1859. I have no idea why she was called "Burton". She married Edgar Walter BAXTER in 1889. David and Ann also had a son, William David GOLDSTONE, born in Colchester in 1861. He worked as a stone mason. He married Eliza PORTER in Colchester in 1885. They had 4 children (as far as I know) all born in Colchester: Frederick (born about 1886), Harry, (born about 1888), Annie (born 1890), and Frank (born 1893). At some time between Frank's birth and the 1901 Census, the family moved to Grimsby, Lincolnshire, where William continued working as a stone mason. I would be very interested in some more definite information about David GOLDSTONE and his ancestors. 1. Goldstone Family Tree
    2. Howell
    3. Hi Eve! Am still searching for my Goldstone ancestors when time allows - which is rare these days. I am stuck at Robert GOLDSTONE who m. Elizabeth BOWDEN whose son Richard was born in Bath, SOmerset in 1802. I think that Robert and Elizabeth may also have had Elizabeth (b.1800), William (b.1804), THomas (b.1806), Anna (b.1808), all in Bath, Somerset. I believe Robert's father was Richard GOLDSTONE but that is all I know. Robert was a surgeon, as was his son Richard. Richard GOLDSTONE married Caroline BURGON and they had 5 children - Amy Bowden (b.1829 in Ware, Hertford), Richard Bennett (b. abt 1831 in Bath, Somerset), Caroline Sophia (b.1832 in Bath, Somerset), Celia M (Maud?) (b.abt 1838 in Marshfield, Gloucester) and Bowden (b.abt 1842 in Marshfield, Gloucester). Richard spent some time in the Channel Islands (an army doctor?) as both Richard Bennett and Caroline Sophia were married there to another brother and sister, Frederick AUgustus NOWELL and Fanny Louisa Susan NOWELL. Richard then immigrated to AUstralia in 1853 where he worked as an army doctor in the developing area of Cheltenham. I believe his wife Caroline stayed behind in England but I do not have any further information about her despite my best efforts. Richard's son, Richard Bennett and his wife Fanny immigrated to Australia in 1854, followed soon after by Caroline and Frederick in 1855. I belive that Celia may have remained unmarried and it appears that she was living in Southampton All Sts, Hampshire in the 1881 Census. I believe that Bowden married Eliza Ann Collier in 1874 in Wiltshire but she had died before the 1881 Census with no children that I know of. He was a coach builder living in Melcombe, Dorset in 1881 and later immigrated to Australia where he died in Melbourne in 1912. I also believe that Amy Bowden may have married Unknown ISAAC and immigrated to Australia as well but I have been unable to find any further records to support this idea. If you or anyone else can fill in any gaps I would be very grateful. I hope to hear more from you. Regards, Merryn

    3. Hello Merryn, Yes I have your family. Information was supplied by a donor to the Somerset RO a number of years ago. He obivously spent may years on the research ad it has checked out very well. I will type the section for the Goldstone of Bath that he left for us. your line is Richard 1802 Robert 16.3.1774 Richard 10.3.1745 John Goldstone arrived in Bath 1744. The section is quite long and perhaps Eve can scan it for you as she too has a copy. If not I will be happy to type it for you. or makes copies and snail mail for you.
