    1. [GOLDBERG] Goldberg of Germany > NYC
    2. Paul & Fredreica Speyer
    3. I am looking for a Mr Goldberg or Goldburg of Germany. His wife, Bertha, was born about 1832 and came to America about 1855. Mr. Goldberg was dead by the 1880 census, but his wife and daughters were living in New York City, New York County, NY. There is a Bertha Goldberg, widow of a Julius Goldberg, in the 1890 New York City Directory, but I don't know if Julius is the Mr. Goldberg I am looking for. Bertha's daughter, Emma Married Jacob Speyer in Manhattan in 1890. In 1900 Bertha Goldberg and her daughter Jennie or Jenny were living with Emma and Jacob Speyer in Jersey City, Hudson County, NJ. I do not have access to the 1910 census index and have not requested a look-up, so I have been unable to find the Speyer or Goldberg family in 1910. According to her obituary in 1916 Emma Goldberg Speyer was laid to rest in Jersey City beside her mother and two children. These two children are not Walter and Arthur Speyer who were born in New York City and lived long, healthy lives, so Emma must have had 2 children after they moved from New York to Jersey City. I am trying to find the Goldberg family in 1870 to see if Mr. Goldberg was still alive, but I have had no luck so far. I would like to know who Emma Goldberg Speyer's father was. If any of these people sound familiar to you, please let me know. Thanks so much for your help! Speyer had passed away following an operation. Mrs. Speyer went to the hospital on Thursday for an examination. She was told that a major operation would be necessary, but that as she had perhaps made preparations for spending her Christmas with her family the operation could be deferred until the following week. Mrs. Speyer felt that this would be unnecessary delay, expense and trouble, declared her wish to have the operation performed at once. On Friday morning she was placed on the operating table where she remained for five hours. She came from under the influence of the ether with her condition favorable to recovery. The next day, however, it was evident that she was not rallying as she should. Early in the afternoon Mr. Speyer was called from the Oliver Hotel by the hospital, but when he arrived Mrs. Speyer had passed away. Mr. Speyer made the necessary arrangements for starting East with his wife's body on Sunday morning and summoned his son Walter from Chicago and Arthur from Culver to join him. Mrs. Speyer was laid to rest in Jersey City beside her mother and two children. Mrs. Speyer was a woman of sweet spirit and and full of mother love. As wife and mother she made her home a haven of sunshine. Her death is an unspeakable blow to her husband and sons to whom the sympathy of the community will go out in the largest measure.
