I am in possession of a letter written 26 Sept. 1890 from a George M. (or possibly W.) Goff to his sister (unnamed), which I just received from my mother-in-law. She purchased a box of odds and ends years ago which contained this handwritten letter. When the letter was written, George was apparently stationed at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. According to Wikipedia, "The Jefferson Barracks Military Post is located on the Mississippi River at Lemay, Missouri, south of St. Louis. It was an important and highly active U.S. Army installation from 1826 through 1946. It is the oldest operating U.S. military installation west of the Mississippi River." The only other names mentioned in the letter other than George are a Mrs. Pearce ("You tell Mrs. Pearce that I will be very much obliged to her when she writes to me.") and a Mrs. Brandon (".he was sitting against a tree talking to himself about god and the devil and Mrs. Brandon."). I would very much like for this letter to be with someone who is part of George's family, since I have no connection whatever. Please let me know if there are relatives on this board, or if there is a Goff historian who might take custody of the letter. It is on heavy lined stock, but the pages are tearing along folds which have been there for a long time. Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
