James Steely Goff is my ggggrandfather, the same from Englewood. Do you have much information about Steely's parents and beyond or that of his wife Eliza?? I've recently begun working on this line and have recently acquired the book about the Goffs and the booklet compiled for a reunion of the Goffs in that area. I'd love to chat about it and share if I have anything you don't!! Barbara

Based on Census information, his wife's name was Emeline and was also born in New Hampshire, about 1809/1810. They are in Essex County, New York in the 1820 Census. I didn't find them in the 1840 Census, but they are in Essex County in all other Census 1820 thru 1870. I am looking for their ancestry but primarily I'm looking for their children.

He moved with his family after the civil war to Charollette county florida. His family helped found the town of Englewood Florida. I think the lawyer, John Goff from Tampa that you are looking for is part of the same lineage as I had some great uncles naqmed John Goff who inturn named there son John Goff. Many of my realatives live in Tampa, or in surrounding counties. This John may be part of this family tree. I have a book containing the lineage form Steely Goff to the present. The book is called the Goffs of Southwest Florida and was compiled in 1978. There are also two books written by a Josephine Cortes in the 50-60's that highlight the lives of some of the early Goffs of florida. If you would like I could send a copy of the geneology book to see if it is the same John Goff.

Lockhart announce the publication of their book, The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia, which will ship in late September 2003. The book follows the lives of James, John Turton, Thomas and Salathiel Goff as they forged the western Virginia frontier in the 1770s. After sojourns into what are now Loudoun Co., Va. and Hardy Co., W.Va., the Goff brothers raised families in present-day Preston Co., W.Va.; Tucker Co., W.Va. and Clark Co., Ky. Descendants are disbursed across the U.S., with concentrations in West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Texas, Nebraska, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Descendants married into families, including Bolyard, Boyles, Bush, Denny, Hardman, Riddle, Heck, Moats, Springston, Stockwell, Sudduth and Swetnam. Building on 40 years of research by Lockhart, the authors in 1999 embarked on a quest to uncover and examine every contemporary reference to these four pioneering brothers. Scouring public and private archives from Massachusetts to Florida, Lockhart and Goff identified nearly 1,400 documents from 1766 to 1833 pertaining to the four Goff brothers. Among these were never-before-published records containing information on the early lives of the Goff brothers and their families. The resulting book is a fully indexed work, with newly prepared maps, original illustrations, signatures of all four men, quotes from three of the brothers and photographs of one child and 53 grandchildren of the four Goff brothers. With 400+ pages and nearly 2,300 footnotes, this hardbound book is divided into three parts. The first section recounts how the Goff brothers conquered the wilderness of western Virginia in search of land, while surviving Indian attacks and living through land disputes, slavery and personal struggles. The book continues with a genealogy of the Goff brothers, beginning with what is known about their parents and proceeding through their over 250 grandchildren born between 1792 and 1861. The book concludes with documentary appendices, including key court cases and surviving wills of three of the Goff brothers. The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia is a limited edition book.
