    1. [GOFF] James Steely Goff
    2. Hi Bill and Noah!! I'm Barbara that recently found Noah. What a wonderful email hearing about James Steely's parents and grandparents?? Did I understand correctly that James Steely's parents were Samuel and Tabitha Watson and his grandparents were Dempse Goff and Catherine Herring?? That is so exciting!! The story of Indian heritage is a constant rumor in our branch of William's descendants but noone seems to have any solid stories to research. What have you heard?? I'd love to hear any oral histories that you can share. My email address is: [email protected] I continue to try and find my oldest Goff relatives to talk with them. I'm always hoping for more information. I look forward to hearing you. Barbara

Surnames: Goff Brown Woodard Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5MZ.2ACEB/1012.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Hello Noah. I tried to send this to both your email addresses, but neither went through. Hope you see it here and I'll try to send the pictures to the message board as well. I am Bill Brown and am descended from James Steely's daughter Tobitha and Green M. Brown. Green died fairly young, but not before having 7 children with Tobitha, including my great grandfather John Brown. Tobitha later married a man named Alexander. I don't have a whole lot above James Steely and only a few pictures, but here it goes. Most of this I haven't proven, but has been passed on to me by cousins. I applied for and got Tobitha Goff's death certificate. It lists her father as Seely Gaff and mother as Eliza Woodard. We know James Steely Goff was married to Eliza Woodard. Tobitha is buried in the Lacoochee cemetery here in Florida. She is buried between 2 of her Brown children. An 1850 census report shows Samuel Gaff as head of house 148 and a James S. Gaff as head of house 149. Th! e 1840 census shows them a few households apart. James Steely Goff's father Samuel Goff Sr. was married to a Tabitha Watson ( an Indian?) and they had about 14 children. Samuel Sr had at least one sibling - William. Their parents were Dempse Goff and Catherine Herring. They were married 5 Mar 1783 in Duplin County, NC. I've attached 5 JPGs for you: 1. I believe this a group photo of James Steely, wife Eliza Woodard, Tobitha Goff and Green Brown plus kids. 2. Picture of Tobitha Goff Brown Alexander 3. Picture of Eliza Woodard, wife of James Steely 4. Picture of James Steely Goff 5. A letter from another cousin descended from Steely's son Dempse. His email address is on it, but I'm not sure if it's still good. I also have some notes on some of the civil war Goffs and some old Goff marriage lists. These are all the photos I have of our Goffs so if you come across any different ones, I sure would like to see them. Hope this helps some.

They started in SC then moved down into GA then after the civil war they moved to Georgia. If you have aunts in Tampa and Ft. Meyers you may very well be related. It seems that while doing my research all the Goffs I contact in Florida are related in some way. The Goff family became very large once the family moved to florida. William Goff alone had three wives and over twenty children. So the lineage in Florida gets very long. If you think that I can be of help Email me at; [email protected] [email protected]

    3. We are Frank & Zaroga Goff. This letter from THE REPRINT COMPANY, PUBLISHERS may be of interest to some of you. It states: We are planning another printing of this title and it will be done using new technology which allows for printing on demand. It will be printed on acid-free paper and cased into a hardback binding. It will be a reprint of our 1983 printing. In two volumes and almost 500 pages, the set is priced at $65.00 per set plus $4.25 for postage and handling. The Pascagoula River Valley includes Jackson County, Mississippi, and George County, which was part of Jackson County for a century. The existing written and legendary material on the region have been brought together in the first volume of the set, entitled HISTORY, STORY, AND LEGEND OF THE PASCAGOULA COUNTRY, which covers the history of the territory up to 1817. Part I of Volume II (HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE PASCAGOULA RIVER COUNTRY) covers additional history of the region, from 1812 to 1960. Part II of Volume II, over half the book, is devoted to genealogy: names of immigrants coming into the region, the census of 1850, families of 1860, cemetery records, and Bible records. Three courthouse fires in Jackson County make this volume particularly valuable as a source of genealogical records. I anticipate having books ready for shipment in early October. If you wish a copy from this printing, we will need your check or credit card order by September 15, 2003. We will not deposit the check nor process the credit card until the book is in production. At that time, you will receive notification with an anticipated shipping date. If, for some reason, the does not allow us to proceed, we will notify you and return your check. Sincerely, Thomas E. I believe that those names are among the geneololgy tree that is in the book. The book also includes a brief history of the Goffs of Southwest Florida including information stating that they moved from Georgia right after the Civil War. There is also a festival in Englewood Florida on Labor day weekend that honors the Goff family and early pioneers to the area. I will be attending to help with my study. I will send the book when I get an address. I hope it helps in your family history search.
