I'm pleased to see a rigorous discussion of the Goff/Gough/Goffe Surname Study. This study is of the Y-chromosome DNA, which is only passed, largely unchanged, from father to son. As such, it is a fantastic tool for studying surnames, which also generally pass, largely unchanged, from father to son. I believe the below message was in response to an inquiry from a researcher whose g-g-grandmother was a Goff born in upstate in NY in 1847. This researcher can probably determine the father of the g-g-grandmother through census or other records. With the proper records, skill and determination, this line may be traced back many more generations. Unfortunately, in some Goff/Gough/Goffe families, the record trail is lost. In my case, I know that my earliest Goff ancestor was one of four brothers appeared seemingly out of nowhere in 1765 in Loudoun County, VA. In the early 1770s, James Goff, John Turton Goff, Thomas Goff and Salathiel Goff moved further west into what is now WV and KY. Despite an intensive search of records in the US and databases for other countries, we have been unable to determine the origin or ancestry of these four brothers. The Goff family of upstate NY may also reach this time of brick wall. If so, the Goff/Gough/Goffe Surname Study offers the chance to determine how the various Goff/Gough/Goffe families are related. Because this Goff/Gough/Goffe Surname Study follows the Y-chromosome, only Goff males with a straight line of descent from Goff males may participate. I would encourage any male Goff/Gough/Goffe to signup for this worthy study by following the below link to the project page: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=K13572&special=True&projecttype=S -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [GOFF] Fw: Goff DNA Resent-Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 09:45:03 -0600 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 09:44:47 -0600 From: "WILLIAM JENKIN" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: WILLIAM JENKIN To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 11, 2004 9:41 AM Subject: Goff DNA Hello Terry My name is Terry White and I have Goff in the family I belive you do not have to go on her dna as long as you have her Father Name and great grand father name and have the dna and you might need to have your dna as this is suposse to show you have the Goff dna I have not done this my self I done some research and I came a cross all my family tree line and I have a whole bunch of my cousin on line and got more information than the DNA but you might want to do that. From what my ex-husabnd & I gleaned, Frank was a border-patrolman in Washington state. The Goff family I am trying to find is from Tupper Lake Junction, NY. They were French-Canadians, pioneers of upstate New York in the late 1800's, that originally spelled their name "Gaff", but I guess through mis-pronunciation it was often interchanged as "Goff". Try searching "Gaff" records as well. A second cousin (Thank you Andy! Please contact me again!) sent me pictures and articles and info that I need to get out of storage since moving to FL to continue research. This family was extremely talented! They all played musical intruments and were on a weekly radio show! I really wish I could tell y ou moreI I would like to learn more as well! I even contacted my ex's 1/2 bro & sis- they refuse contact & will not give us any info. They were born in ! a different era and were very hurt by their dad. My ex is a 1942 war baby. Time does not heal all wounds. George Ernest Goff died in 1948 from complications of malaria & beatings from being in the Bataan Death March and in a Japanese prison camp. So my ex never knew his father...nor his half siblings who have rejected him. If I can get to my records i n storage I will give you what I h ave on Frank...if his B-day and place of birth match. His 3rd marriage was to Mary Goodrow. He was an instructor at West Point when he died and an article/interview was written about him by a cadet at the time about his experience as a POW.

In the 1850 census for Whitley Co., he and his children are listed but not Sally. The children I have names for are Nancy Jane, my gr-gr-grandmother, Elizabeth, Balem and Sarah. In the 1860 Whitley Co. census there's an Elijah Goff in Shelton Poynter's household. His age is given as 54 and there are twins with last name Goff, ages 21. I can't read their first names. Since my Elijah Goff's daughter married Jesse Poynter, perhaps the Elijah in Shelton Poynter's household could be my Elijah, since Shelton and Jesse were brothers. This is about all I have on him, or any Elijah that might be him.

My message was kicked back by aol, so I thought I might reach you through the Ancestry.com Goff message board. Below is my email to you, which is applicable to all readers of the Goff message board: Lisa, Thanks for the email. From the date and place you mentioned, I don't believe Henry F. Goff is descended from any of the four Goff brothers of Western Virginia (i.e. James Goff, John Turton Goff, Thomas Goff or Salathiel Goff). However, that's OK and maybe even preferable for the DNA testing. I'll explain. I am descended from James Goff mentioned above. Despite a lot of searching, we have never been able to determine the parents or ancestry of these four Goff brothers. That's when I decided to use the momentum from the book Roy Lockhart and I published last year (The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia) and start this DNA Study to try to push the genealogy further back in time. We will soon have four male Goffs in the study, representing three of the four Goff brothers. With this group, we should be able to determine the Y chromosome DNA signature of the father of the four Goff brothers. The next step is to recruit male Goffs who are not descended from the four Goff brothers. By comparing the Y chromosome DNA signature of these seemingly unrelated Goffs, we will be able to determine if these different Goff families actually share a common ancestor. Of course, we will need to then find the link using historical documents, but the search will be made easier by knowing where to look. So far, I have made contact with the following Goff families: Samuel Goff (b. 1743, CT?) - some descendants have already been tested and results should be ready in the next month. Ishom Goff (b. 1809, SC) - the administrator of the website for this family has been working with me to recruit participants Wiley Goff (b. 1822, SC) - researcher of this family is searching for male Goff descendants to partipate in the study Joshua Gough/Goff (b. 1744, lived in what is now WV) - I have contacted a researcher to inquire about getting male Goff volunteers As you can see, the more male Goffs we can recruit from different Goff families, the more likely we can piece all of these families together again. The DNA sample is collected in your own home by simply rubbing a swab on the inside of your cheek and then mailing in the swab. I hope you can get some of your male Goff relatives to join our study. To signup, your male Goff relatives may go to http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=K13572&special=True&projecttype=S Lisa, thanks for asking about the DNA Study. Phil

The History of Ancient Wethersfield shows Guernsey Goff married to Asenath Brainerd. I show a daughter, Lucinda Goff b. Colchester CT 24 Apr 1791. She married Joshua Brainerd. I have no other information, however the Brainerd Genealogy may have more. I can look it up this Thursday for you if you like.

My gr-grandparents (Willard Clark Benson) took in an Alice A. Goff as an apprentice in 1862 to teach her "housewifery." I am looking for descendants of George Pilkington b. 1840 who married Sarah Ann Hudson Edgar in 1876 in Wappingers Creek, New Hamburg, Dutchess City, NY Their children were born in RI, for the most part at least: Susanna Pilkington who married Albert Elliott. I have an obituary for Fred Elliott (died Aug. 8, 1951 in Lawrence, MA) who married Arline C. Stimpson and had twins, Rose and Anne, and also a son Fred Jr. Alice Pilkington who married Daniel Fanning July 27, 1899. Annie Herbert Pilkington who married Joseph Goff Sept. 1, 1904. They had two daughters that I have found in the census information. Annie H. Goff was born about 1906 and her sister Ethel L. Goff was born about 1913. They were living on Dexter Street, Providence, Rhode Island in the 1920 census. Thomas Hudson Pilkington who married Margaret Mary Geough in 1908 and lived on Huntington Ave., Providence, RI in 1920. Robert Pilkington who married (Katherine?)Catherine Agnes McElroy in 1915. In 1920 they lived on Waverly St., Providence, RI and had Sarah aged 4, Robert aged 2, and a child listed as a son but might be named Catherine V., a newborn. William Pilkington Fredrick Pilkington I have more recent information on some of these if anyone thinks they are related. Priscilla --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The goal is to determine what, if any, ancestral links are shared between the various Goff (and variant spelling) families worldwide. In particular, the ancestry of James Goff (1735-1834), John Turton Goff (d. 1803), Thomas Goff (1747-1824) and Salathiel Goff (ca. 1748-1791) has been elusive, perhaps until now. The Goff-Gough-Goffe DNA Study may once and for all reveal the identity of the father and ancestry of the Goff brothers. Male Goffs are needed to participate in this study. Please proceed to the Goff-Gough-Goffe DNA Study website at http://home.comcast.net/~philgoff/GoffDNA.htm for further information.
