Assuming that Squire Goff died in Willington, it would be worth checking probate and land records to see if any reference was made towards family members. Also if he was a farmer in Coventry, to whom did he sell or otherwise give his land? I'll see what I can do. Let me know if you have any additional ideas. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: abelnmabel Surnames: Goff Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goff/1146.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Freeman is a question mark in my tree but everything I can find points to Seth Goff as being his father. They were listed in adjacent households in both the 1850 and 1860 census (probably the same census information noted in the original post). Also Freeman's son Ernest's middle name was Seth. Side note - my father's (Ernest's grandson) middle name is Ernest. I see this pattern in several spots in the Goff line and it's probably common for a lot of families but it is a clue I think. I found a 1840 census listing a Seth Goff in New York with a family of 6 but the document is very faded and there is little else I can see. I am currently stuck on this question, which is what brought me to this board... the question of "Where did this Freeman Goff come from?" One more note - Carl Orion Goff was married to Mildred Irene Anderson, my grandmother. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [GOFF] Olar Goff
    2. B&G Goff
    3. Olar Goff I am looking for any information on the family of Olar Goff and Della Myers Goff. Olar was born 14 may 1888 in Meeker, Rio Blanco, County he was the son of James D. and Sarah Primmer Goff. Olar and Della were married 17 April 1915 in Independence, Jackson, Missouri. Olar registered for the WWI draft in Omaha, Nebraska on June 5, 1917. His draft registration shows they had a child and his occupation was shown as cook. The 1924 Kansas City, Missouri city directory shows an Olar Goff either working or living at the Cadillac Café in the Rasbach Hotel. Della may have been born Oct 1892 in Atchison, Nodaway, Missouri and the daughter of John and Inez Myers. I loose track of this family in Kansas City, Missouri in 1924, Where did they die and where are they buried? What was the child’s name? Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. Author: susanbecher Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goff/1227.2.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello again. An additional thought. At some point between the 1830 and 1840 census enumerations, Squire and Mary Goff moved from the nearby town of Coventry to that of Willington. In 1840, Squire is considered to be a farmer and by the 1850 census, he is listed without occupation; but to be fair,he was in his seventies. His move might match the Shaffer's involvement in what became the West Willington Glass Works. In 1850, Leonard lists his occupation as glass blower. According to the Museum of Ct. Glass, The West Willington Glassworks 1814-1872 In 1814, a stock company was formed by John Turner, Ebenezer Root and Frederick Rose, all presumably from Coventry, CT and Roderick Rose, Stephen Brigham Jr, Elisha Brogham and Spafford Brigham, all of Mansfield, CT. Abiel Johnson Jr was also said to have been part of the organizing group which was clearly competing against the Pitkin Glassworks, The John Mathers Glassworks and the Coventry glassworks. They remained the owner until 1828 when Gilbert, Turner & Company acquired the glassworks as well as the Coventry works. This company operated the Willington glassworks until 1847. There was a Hartford agent named Lee, Hopkins & Butler who advertised Willington porters in 1829. In 1847, Gilbert, Turner and Company sold the works to a group of six men. Harvey Merrick, Elisha Carpenter, William M. Still, William & Francis Shaffer and James McFarlane. The first output of glass bottles consisted of inkwells, snuffs, demijohns, chestnuts and flasks including some pitkin types. There were reportedly a few rare sealed bottles as well. As far as we know, there were no marked bottles or flasks prior to 1849. From this date to 1872, demijohns dominated the sales with wines, some bitters and even a booze bottle cabin figural. Perhaps the most famous of the wares are the Willington gothic cathedral type pickle jars of varying sizes and colors. They also produced base-embossed cylindrical bottles (there are 9 variants known), varying sizes of berry bottles in olive amber and olive green colors, and of course, the popular Liberty Eagle marked flasks in 1/2 pint, pint & quart moulds. The Willington glassworks also produced utility bottles, insulator types, rolling pins and assorted tableware. The colors of the glass were similar to Pitkin's & Coventry's but the shades of greens are among the most beautiful glass ever produced in this! country. Author: susanbecher Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goff/1227.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am researching some missing history in my husbands' family and am wondering if both Mary born in 1814 and the wife of Leonards' brother William might be closely related. Williams' wifes' maiden name was Bethania Goff, an unusual one, but found within older generations of the Goff/Goffe family. Bethania was born in 1801/1802, which makes her a bit older than Mary, but not old enough to be her mother. If Susan was married to Squier by her early twenties, she could very conceivably (play on words) be mother to both Bethania and Mary. Not the first time that brothers married sisters. I have found that even though the 1850 census record shows Leonard's last name as Shaffee, it should read Shaffer. Any ideas that you have would be wonderful. A post from Kevin Tupper from 2000, notes that local history considers William, Daniel, Leonard and Frances Shaffer to be brothers who moved at some point from Mansfield, Ct. to Willington. As Mr. Tupper notes, that was not a distant! move. Coventry, Mansfield and Willington, Ct. are towns very close to each other. He was living with the Shaffer family in Willington, Ct. in 1850, My guess is that he and his wife might be close relatives (parents?) of Bethania Shaffer ne Goff. Her first name is not completely unusual within the Goff family, but I haven't yet found the connection. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: GalenDuncan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goff/253.281/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe that Jemima Goff was probably the sister of Hezekiah because of their ages. The sale of 12 Feb 1805 Hezekiah Goff to Wm. Leggett was substantial; 40 hogs, roan mare & colt, 4 cows, and household furniture. Hezekiah is not found in the Jefferson County tax rolls after 1804 so it appears that he left the county. The message board of Robert Knight Family will explain why this is a possibility. Author: familyhistory698 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goff/2278/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Great Grandmother is Amanda. She married my GGrandfather Henry Harrison Poe. I have found my family on the 1900 census but haven't been able to locate them on the 1910 or 1920. My GGrandfather Henry died in 1922. I found Amanda M age 59 on the 1930 Census married to Charles Goff age 79. They had Cecil H. Poe age 18 living with them. Cecil is listed as the stepgrandson of Charles. My dad was only a year old when Henry Poe died. My dad remembers going to the little general store that his grandma Amanda and grandpa run or maybe owned. I think it is possible that Charles may have died some time in the mid thirties possiblly of a heart attack from the things my dad told me. The only other thing I know about Amanda is that she had red hair. My Poes were in Washington County, Arkansas. From my understanding my ggrandmother died around 1931 in Washington County, Arkansas or was at least buried there. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
