In Box 56, 1786, I found a court case in which a John Goff sued Leonard Hall for payment for the services which Baldwin provided him, like: "making a pear of {horse} shues, nailing on two pear of shues,....upsetting 2 matocks,...mending a clevis,...sharpening a plane,...mending a pan, 300 tacks, 900 tacks,.... upsetting 2 hoes, etc." And on the back of the page: "making a case of knives and forks". Clevis = a U-shaped metal connector within which another part can be fastened by means of a bolt or pin passing through the ends of the connector. I thought that you might like to know that a John Goff was a blacksmith in Bedford County and to view one of his account statements. I have attached a photograph of the document. I seem to remember a lot of internet inertia suggesting William & Elizabeth moved to Mississippi, but that did not turn out to be what I found. The Goff's (which show up in census records spelled phonetically as Gaugh, Gaff & Goff) liked to reuse the names of grandparents for their children and more unusual names like Penelope and Dempsey being used in multiple generations helped tie the family together. If you like I can send you my line from Dempsey Goff (RS) that is based on census records. But if you have more than I do on the Cox, Hunter or Goff lines that we share I would be interested. William was the father of my 2nd great grandmother, Penelope Jane (Goff) Hill. I notice that in the last census I find William and his family, there is a young son, Larkin, who was born in Florida and I have always wondered if the family settled in Florida or did they return to Georgia. I know the disposition of Penelope Hill, just not the rest of that family. Penelope was apparently named for her grandmother, Penelope (Cox) Hunter. 'Rock solid proof' can be hard to come by, and I do not have any about William & Elizabeth Goff moving to Mississippi. What evidence I have is strong circumstantial evidence based on census records, that William & Elizabeth DID NOT move to Mississippi, but rather stayed in Georgia. I do not know if William died as a result of action during the Civil War, or if he just died 'during' the Civil War. His death seems to have taken place during the time of the long Atlanta Campaign, but he was also almost 50 years old which would be a very advanced age for a regular ACW soldier. Hope this helps some. Regards, Chris Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MarilynRoth58 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.goff/593.608.781.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I tried the e-mail address, KKJANDSS@aol.com, but it didn't work. I suspected it might have been changed. The Ancestry card catalog (at the bottom of the search menu) has a History of Cambridge, MA. This says that Edmund GOFFE was the principal heir to his father's estate and resided on the homestead. John, son of Samuel, was probably the soldier at Piscataqua, who had leave to return home 4 Nov. 1690 & died before 1706, as Edmund, when appointed administrator on the estate of their father Samuel, is styled the only surviving son. This eliminates John GOFF of New Jersey as son of Samuel of Cambridge, MA (if correct). I suspect that John GOFF of New Jersey was the one who married Ann EDWARDS, 22 May 1701, East Hampton, Suffolk, (Long Island), NY. FamilySearch.org has the date. However, John EDWARDS had bpt. at East Hampton, NY: Ann, Hannah, John, Joseph, & William, all on 23 Apr. 1710. This seems to conflict with the son John being born in New Jersey in 1702, but I haven't found proof that the first John was there before he recorded his cattle mark in 1710. Perhaps the children were baptized before the family moved to New Jersey. It's also possible that John & Ann returned to visit her family and for godparents for their children. There might not have been a church of their preferred denomination in Cape May. I didn't find any other GOFF records in East Hampton, but there are many EDWARDS records there. William EDWARDS had a will, pr. 1685, naming wf. Ann, son John & John's sons William & Josiah and son Thomas and his sons William and Ephraim (& other heirs). One Ephraim sold land in East Hampton in Sept. 1701, dower released by wf. Sarah, & quitclaim by Thomas EDWARDS, heir & eldest son of the eldest son of Wm. Ephraim was named tax collector in Cape May in 1713, his estate pr. 2 Jan. 1715/6 . There are multiple records at Cape May for Ephraim and Josiah EDWARDS, names which seem to link those from East Hampton, NY, to Cape May, NJ. Does anyone have further clues about the first John GOFF, who was of New Jersey by 1710? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are many records of East Hampton for the EDWARDS family. The first was William EDWARDS, who left a will, pr. 21 Oct. 1685. He named wife Anne, ex., son John and John's sons Josiah and William, and son Thomas & his sons Ephraim & William; daughters Ann SQUIRE & Elizabeth BAKER and Elizabeth's children Richard, Thomas, Isaac, Benjamin & Elizabeth STRAT[T]ON. [Elizabeth had m1. Richard STRATTON who d. 1675, & m2. 1678, Thomas BAKER.] Wm. also mentioned that ownership of the land he had given to his daughter Sarah was being debated with Nathaniel DOMINY. Ephraim EDWARDS sold land in East Hampton, NY, 8 Sep. 1701, with dower released by wf. Sarah, & quitclaim by Thomas EDWARDS, heir and eldest son of the eldest son of William EDWARDS. Ephraim EDWARDS was named tax collector in Cape May Co., NJ, in 1713, and his estate was inventoried 2 Jan. 1715/6 Cape May Co. but not closed until 1726, administrator Humphrey HUGHES. Some do not think Ephraim left issue, though he did have two daughters bpt. 1699 & 1701, East Hampton, where he "owned the covenant" 31 Dec. 1699, as did William & Josiah, 17 Mar. 1699/1700. There were others in Cape May Co., NJ, including Josiah EDWARDS, who had land there in 1733, & Ephraim, who had land in 1737. Josiah EDWARDS ( b. 1699, NY, s/o Josiah) had dau. Martha, b. 1732, who m. 1757, Peter CORSON. Some say that the wife of the first John GOFF died in 1702. However, there was a marriage of John CORSON to Mary GOFF, m. lic. 4 June 1731, Secretary's Office, Burlington, NJ. They had children 1732 through 1742. Mary must have been daughter of the first John GOFF. If Mary married at a normal age, she was born after John, b. 1702. Either the first wife was living after 1702, or John [1] remarried. Have you found proof that John of New Jersey was grandson of Edward of Massachusetts? I do not think that Edward was a brother of William, the regicide. Oxford Alumni Bulletin has Stephen GOFFE, matriculated Oct. 1691, aged 16, M. A., 1699; sons Stephen, Nov. 1621, 16; John, 1627, 17; Nathaniel, Mar. 1642, ae. 16; & Wm., created M.A., 1649. There was also a James of St. Clements Lane, East Cheap, London, whose will of 17 Jan. 1656, named brother, Maj. Gen. Wm., and brothers-in-law Edward BOVERY & Nicholas ADY. Thus, we have Stephen, b. ca. 1575, with sons Stephen, James, John, Wm., & Nathaniel. The advanced education date & the sons' birth dates seem to verify the marriage in 1604 of Stephen GOFFE to Deborah WEST. Edward GOFFE of Cambridge, MA, was b. ca. 1593 & married Joyce FROST, 6 Mar. 1624, St. Mary's, Wherstead (on the south edge of Ipswich, also listed in BOYD's Marriage Index for Suffolk). My Mtdna results are under my mothers name, Catherine I Flasch, and m 2nd grandmother Ida Krueger's name. Because you are female, our only dna connection could come through "Family Finder", and I have not any success with that. If you have any male direct Goff line family member who could take a Y dna test, that would be the best way to make a connection. That small "Lee County group" has unique dna markers that separate us from all the other Goff groups. None of the living Goffs in this group have been able to determine how we connect. The only thing we have fo! und is that our individual lines come from the mid-Atlantic region all around the "Cumberland Gap". Take a look at my public tree and see if anything fits.
