In light of Marilyn's post, I thought I'd let everyone know that I run a Godby/Godbey DNA Project at Family Tree DNA. The use of DNA as a tool in genealogy has come of age in this decade. The DNA tested is part of the unrecombined Y-Chromosome DNA that is passed from father to son over many centuries with very little change. The DNA test used is not a paternity test, as the results obtained are shared by each male person who descends from a common paternal ancestor. We have two results to date; mine with roots in Pulaski Co. KY, (a Godby but for a name change in 1833), and a Godby with roots in S.W. Virginia. We match, confirming the common descent of the Pulaski Co., Kentucky Godby's with the S.W. Virginia Godby's from William Godby born around 1725 in Carolina Co., VA through his sons John and William. I am a Godby from south GA. I believe that my great great grandfather William Godby's family moved from GA to Indiana or Kentucky. I have not been able to locate them past his generation. He lived in Lee Co., GA in 1850 census, close to Williams brother-in-law. There were Godbys in GA in 1790 census. Have been unable to get past William, b.c. 1815. He had sons John, Thomas, Reddin and Elijah; daughters Adaline, Margaret Rebecca, Melissa, Eliza. Is anything familiar to you? (William, Elijah, John (son of Elijah) are buried in Seminole County, GA. There is a large family of Godbys there, and Jerry Godby is the Sheriff of Seminole Co. If you can shed any light for me, I would be eternally grateful, as would all those descendants in So. GA. Henry Harrison's brother John had a daughter named Susannah who married my GG Grandfather Galen Ragan. As a result of my research, and much information shared by others, I have quite a bit of Godby information.
